Judge Smails No, Laramie is not in Laramie County. Laramie is in Albany County, which is a part of the Denver Media Market. They share the Denver Media Market with Colorado and Colorado State. OK, but how much of the Denver market is paying attention to Wyoming athletics? Not much. Through the first 12 regular season games in 2023, Wyoming had higher viewership than Vandy, SMU, Fresno, San Diego State, Air Force, New Mexico, and the three Mountain West viewership bottom-dwellers of Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah State. Or to say another way, highest viewership Mountain West teams 2023: 1. Colorado State 2. Boise State 3. San Jose State 4. UNLV 5. Wyoming
A small percentage of a huge media market is often much larger than a huge percentage of a tiny media market.

I won't pretend to know much about sports media markets. I never even cared about it before all this bulls%#t.
So question....
Doesn't it matter how much of a share teams will likely get in a market? For instance, SJST is in the bay area, but there is so much competition for eye balls.....no one cares about SJST in the bay area
UNR is the only game in town, and they have a loyal fan base

There are no TV stations in Laramie. It's considered part of the Cheyenne/Scottsbluff market, which is # 193. Yes, which puts them way below Reno....that was the point. Yes, just clarifying for him. I hit the wrong post to quote. In regards to another post, it makes as much sense for USU to claim the SLC TV market as it does for us to claim the PDX market. Abouth the same distance away from campus, and there are probably a ton of USU grads in SLC. And what matters is the # of TV sets in your market, not who watches what team on those sets. That's why the Big Ten expanded to Rutgers and Maryland, to claim it had captured the Tri-State and Baltimore/DC TV market.

The difference is that Utah State is actually in the Salt Lake City Media Market. Corvallis is technically in the Eugene Media Market but often claims Bend, Eugene, Portland, and Medford/Klamath Falls and usually dominates all four, when not in direct competition with Oregon. I agree with everything else that you wrote.

However, as of 2021, most people are moving to tax havens Texas and Washington. The next three states are Colorado, New York, and Oregon. Sixth is Nevada. Approximately 9.3% of Bay Area migrants are moving to Nevada. In 2021, that was approximately 13,500 people.

Boise State fan here. From my perspective (and from others here), it’s a good start. Depends on who else the conference brings on to make it at least 8. There are some good teams out there (Memphis, Tulane, maybe USF) that would make a good ‘best of the rest’ conference. I am more excited about having a regular BSU/OSU schedule. Been to a few games in Corvallis and have had a good time every time. Will be a good regular regional rivalry. Not pretending that this is the best news for you guys (or WAZZU) but at least maybe it gives a little more clarity on the future. Hopefully the conference will get an automatic playoff spot. That would be the best result out of all of this. As it sits this would be the best conference out of the current P4.
Outside of the football aspect of this, if the conference could get Gonzaga and St. Mary’s as BB-only members, this would be a really good basketball conference as well.

School I'm keeping an eye on: Texas State University. Football team just sold out their stadium (28K) for a 49-10 shellacking of UTSA. Located in the Austin TV Market but situated about halfway between Austin and San Antonio, I'd assume they'd draw interest from both markets (similar to Corvallis being sort of between Portland and Eugene). Good location in two big-ish markets and a fertile recruiting ground.

A small percentage of a huge media market is often much larger than a huge percentage of a tiny media market. But again, Colorado State's 814k number is pretty much all due to the 9.3 million viewers who tuned in to watch Prime in the Colorado game. Those numbers were astronomical and skewed CSU's overall numbers to an extreme degree. CSU just doesn't draw numbers without the boost of a big name. In 2022 it was Michigan. But neither do Fresno State or San Diego State.

I took it out to three years, because the numbers start to get weird before that with COVID-19. Nevada ranks 10th. San Jose State and Wyoming rank ahead of Nevada in viewership.

Fresno put up good numbers the last two years but had an awful 2021.

Boise State was the only MWC program that could get somewhat decent numbers based at least in part on its brand.
