Tough place to play no matter how good or bad U of A is playing. Rock hard infield, huge outfield, tricky wind , usually hot as hell and the ball flys. Been to a few series there and it’s never comfortable.

In voting in this poll, I took the emotional vote - take 2, and win series. But my head/ logic says 1, as our pitching and defense have been a little suspect this season. Too bad with the insane hitting we have enjoyed!

Oregon State took two-of-three from Utah and Wazzu on the road this year. The Beavs went 0-5 in the two California trips. 0-5 in California and 39-7 everywhere else.
Five losses in California last year but five wins, as well. Oregon State went 7-8 on the road in Pac-12 play and 11-4 at home last year. 18-12 overall. The Beavs took two-of-three against Oregon, Washington, and UCLA. The Devils won two-of-three in Phoenix. Stanford swept Oregon State at Sunken Diamond.
The last time that Oregon State swept a three-game series on the road was in early April 2022 against USC at Dedeaux. The Beavs finish Pac-12 play on a three-game winning streak at Dedeaux. Oregon State also won two-of-three against Cal, Utah, and Wazzu. The Beavs did lose two-of-three in Tucson, though to finish off the road portion of the schedule.
Oregon State's last three-game road series win in Arizona was back in 2019. Oregon State won two-of-three in Phoenix against Arizona State.
Oregon State's last three-game sweep on the road in Arizona was against Arizona State in Phoenix in 2017. The Beavs won the three games over St. Patrick's Day Weekend by a combined 16-1.
The last time Oregon State won a series in Tucson was 2014: winning 11-2, losing 2-11, and winning 11-0.
Oregon State's last sweep in Tucson was back in 2013: winning 6-2, 4-3, and 8-4.

Obviously would love a sweep, but I went with take one. This team has not shown the ability to win on the road, and our lineup tends to disappear against good pitching. I think Thurs is our best chance, assuming May pitches.

Beavers' Magic Number to finish no worse than 2nd is 2 vs both uo and Utah. uo and Utah cannot finish 1st, but each of them could finish 2nd, or even tied for 2nd

Beavers' Magic Number to finish no worse than 2nd is 2 vs both uo and Utah. uo and Utah cannot finish 1st, but each of them could finish 2nd, or even tied for 2nd No adverse weather expected for any of the games involving the top four teams in the Pac-12, so it is exceedingly unlikely. Oregon State wins the Pac-12 with a sweep. Oregon State finishes second at 2-1. Oregon State can finish anywhere from second to fourth, going 1-2, depending on how Oregon and Utah do. If the Ducks or Utes sweep, they pass the Beavs. Oregon State can finish anywhere from second to fourth, going 0-3, depending on how Oregon, USC, and Utah do. If the Ducks win the series, they pass the Beavs. The same is true of the Utes. If the Trojans sweep, they also pass the Beavs.

I think we'll be hard pressed to get a sweep. Hard infield and the way the defense has played will make it tough. The offense has looked better against decent UCLA starting pitching so I'm optimistic we'll score our fair share this week with it generally being a hitter's ballpark.
Thursday game with the way May has pitched of late and being against his former team I like our chances of getting off on the right foot. Only downside is UA is probably familiar with him and has faced him in practice/simulated games but I still think we have the edge there.
Friday game is the pivotal one IMO. Kmatz has been solid all year until these last 2 weeks, which worries me because his bugaboo is usually the long ball, which does not bode as well in Tucson. The series may entirely rely on which Kmatz shows up this week. UA's game 2 starter has been their best/most consistent guy too if I'm not mistaken so it's crucial we get a good outing from Kmatz here.
Saturday I see as a toss-up. Even though Segura has been hit a little more in conference play, he does still have a 6-1 record and his only loss was against uo. He pitched well against UCLA, the 3rd game IMO will likely come down to whether or not our bullpen/defense can protect a lead or win us a close game.
Essentially I see it as likely we win game 1, and then 2 toss-ups which would lead the optimist in me to bet on a series win but not a sweep. I don't see us getting swept but 1-2 is possible with an outside chance at 3-0 if everything goes well, but historically will be tough

Some great thoughts on pitching here, so I want to pivot to the lineup. Biggest question - what do we do if Caraway is ready to roll? The most obvious bat to sit for Trent is Kreig, but he and Guerra are the only guys we have that played 1st this season. If you put him at 3rd, I think you need to keep Trosky’s glove in the infield with that surface in Tucson. And Trosky‘s bat has been better than Hainline’s (although with less pop). DH is an option, but then Macias sits. Makes sense against a LHP, but hard to justify the way Dallas is swinging vs RHP.
Do we really sit the top frosh hitter in the country when he is a full “go”? Save him as a PH? Or sit the best defensive IF we got, who is also a consistent productive hitter? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great problem to have too many good options in the lineup. But dam, this decision is big, for this season and next!

Top frosh hitter?? Some folks need to do research! Easy now. He was heralded as top frosh in Country as season started. It's a reach to say he's that today, but at least there is a reference point to make the claim.
