I still won't believe it until I see it, but maybe?

Reading the article, it seems one of the ideas on the table is schools in a P4 conference having a choice to opt out, or pay less than the 17-22 mil per year to the athletes. Even so, if any schools opt out, just like with NIL, where does anyone think these athletes are going to go?
Does OSU and other institutions decide they just can't compete and keep up in this rat race, and go a different route? As the SEC/ Big10 head toward semi-pro ball, do we try and forge an alliance with other schools that want to maintain a more traditional amateur platform? Would it even work, and generate enough overall revenue to be even remotely relevant compared to the P4 schools?
I know these are not new ideas/ questions to this board - just curious what others think of this, or is it just too depressing to think about? The other thought is no one really knows at this point what the final product will be - all I know is, none of it looks good at this point.

Seems like a fair amount of current p4 schools could potentially opt out of the revenue sharing model. This is just another step toward a very exclusive group of schools at the top, then everyone else. What a frickin mess.

The other thought is no one really knows at this point what the final product will be - all I know is, none of it looks good at this point. Relevant is a subjective term. But, in terms of finance and overall budgets OSU is not relevant now. And joining the B12 will not change that if enough schools of that conference opt in. Just the change in scholarship allocations and roster size would doom OSU. One of the proposals is to diminish overall football rosters, but offer payment to all... 120 down to 110, but then paying an extra 25 schollies over the current level... PLUS any of the allotted $17-20 mil in player compensation?? Baseball... they are thinking on schollies for the entire roster... let's say it is a 35 man roster. That is 23.3 more scholarships in a sport that already losses money? But, bigger than that... if OSU opts out which it would have to if the total cost is in the $30 mil range... how does OSU fill a baseball roster when you have 30, 40, 50 programs offering 35 schollies?? But, as with most legislation there are so many issues and questions I do not see how it can be implemented by 2026, let alone 2025. Just the Title IX issues and if they apply to athlete compensation will be tied up in court for years. But, The numbers that are being bandied about would bankrupt a large portion of D1 athletic departments. The mention of admin and coaching salaries being cut makes me laugh. I heard that for 30+ years every time a school district budget/levy was proposed. NEVER happens. Programs get cut first. The only way a large % of D1 schools survive is to cut programs, going below the NCAA threshold for the # of programs, or to form a separate division of "opt outs" as I mentioned in another post. And, despite no tin foil hat in my possession, it might be the goal of all this anyway. A super conference that is removed from the jurisdiction of the NCAA?! Who knows what will eventually happen, but NOT being in a P4 conference for the next couple years may be a very good thing. With the payout from the P12 OSU can wait it out and see how things land. Until there is more clarification in all this there is no possible way to know what the best path forward is.

I think there is both a supersizing and a rightsizing of college sports coming. The unfettered greed of the bulk of the P4 schools will lead to the continued arms race, NIL, TV-driven, crazy salaries, crazy facilities, athletes that are barely students trends we see today. The rightsizing will be a subset of schools - like OSU - that couldn't keep up if they wanted to, but also seem to have level-headed leadership that understands the obligations that come with being an educational institution first and foremost (and yes, I believe uo has lost its way in that regard). I am glad OSU has some moral high ground to stand on, perhaps only by circumstance and not strategy or intentionally arrived at, but much more in keeping with how I want to think about my school. If that means we are in the MWC/WCC, so be it. "If that's moving up, I'm moving out" said Billy Joel. I agree.

Big 12?

Googling Big 12 expansion I get articles or videos from the last day or two saying about roughly half the teams in the ACC are likely to join, or wanting to get in, the Big 12. Hmmm, could be a 30 team or so conference if everybody rumored gets in.

I think what Swaim is getting at (he said the info was from the coaches and AD meeting) is that the Big 12 will add some ACC teams as well as the Pac-2. IF this is true and the offer comes, you have to go for it. The legislative stuff will not happen (if it ever does) for quite some time.

It just means less money. Potentially a lot less money.

Don’t expect any Big 12 formal news until August 1, 2024 or later.

It's not that the high ground is innate in the conference, but in what we might have to do to gain membership. I think we all agree that if we can act with integrity, concern for our student/athletes, and responsibilities as a public institution, AND join the Big12, we should join.
