In all seriousness, other than stopping the a game for lightning, since we have artificial turf and rubber dirt, what is the criteria for cancelling a game? When are these decisions actually made? They try to play thru the drizzle.....which seems to be what we often get. I've Sat thru some pretty wet games....when the mound was dirt, that was the biggest limiting factor....now it's artificial as well. If it's a downpour, it becomes a safety issue.....like Judge said, bats flying. Pitchers losing control. Wed, into Thurs, looks really wet, and then potential thunderstorms......Fri/Sat/Sun less wet......as it stands, I'm betting no game on Thurs.....maybe double header on Sat?

Quoting Mark Nelsen's Thurs. forecast off of the Fox 12 website: "Rain changes to scattered showers in the lowlands Thursday behind that cold front. We’ll see the familiar mix of sun, downpours, hail, and maybe even a rumble of thunder"---I saw they moved game time up to 4pm that day---probably just about the time those afternoon sunbreaks generate just enough heating to fire up a thunderstorm with hail and a downpour!

If bats start flying or the players can’t grip the ball, they will delay/cancel. Also, if there’s standing water on the field. Rubber dirt?My terminology for the baseline and pitchers mound material - I thought it was a ground up rubberized material, instead of dirt? Like the black material used to make track surfaces?

Yes, it's ground up rubber. It covers the whole field though, not just the areas that are dirt on traditional surfaces.

I thought it was artificial turf.

I thought it was artificial turf. The whole field is artificial turf. They then place the rubberized pellets on to the turf and rake them in. All parts of the field are the same material, just different colors.

Ahhhh - so, the pitchers mound and the baselines are ground up burnt orange rubber, over artificial turf? got it

Yes - the black "pellets" under the artificial turf. What started this, is my reference to "rubber dirt" - the burnt orange material for the mound and baselines. Judge has informed me it is ground up orange rubber over the artificial turf. Unless I read it wrong!

Unless I read it wrong! All the "pellets" are black... same as on the football field. The turf itself is the only color variation. The pellets become quite a nuisance in wet weather as they stick to everything. And they are not really under... they are spread and "raked"/dragged in on top. They provide a bit of aesthetics, but mostly stability to artificial turf along with feel, performance, and safety of the surface. Infills are generally necessary for all synthetic grass surfaces. They/"infill" are typically refurbished once a year. But high wear areas (soccer goal, mound, batter's boxes, etc.) more often.
