In a low revenue, lucky to break even sport like WBB, how do Athletic Departments afford to fly a 15-20 person entourage across the entire country for a one-game weekend? Does the home team subsidize their expenses? What's the point? What's the gain? Honest question. GO BEAVS!!

According to this article and the accompanying database, the Beavs paid Jackson State $30,000 to play in Corvallis last season so I assume a similar payday is in order this season. I recall this being a touchy subject last season at Jackson State, where there was a feeling that the women's basketball program was severely underfunded and thus essentially being forced to travel for numerous nonconference "buy games" to self-fund themselves (they started last season with 7 road games).

fmpol - - thanks for providing some very pertinent information in response to my questions. The links you posted were new to me, and I learned quite a bit from them....
The next question - and one which logically follows, I believe: Why in hell does OSU pay Jackson State $30,000 to travel cross-country to play a game at Gill that is essentially meaningless for both teams? I can't imagine the Beavs break even financially..And I don't see where they gain much as far as the program goes either.
At any rate, thanks for the info. Appreciate it.... GO BEAVS!!

Tomeika Reed, their coach, has the go anywhere, play anybody mentality. Part of that may be because they don't have much choice, but she's willing to let her team fight it out. And they usually play hard and are normally a solid team. They have a couple players with some good talent. I would rather see out guards challenged, but our bigs need the challenge as well. I was disappointed they got blown out by Kansas State, but I don't mind if the Beavs do the same.

I stopped trying to understand the economics of college non-revenue sports a long time ago, so someone else will have to answer your question. However, from a purely basketball standpoint, this game isn't meaningless to either program. The Jackson State coach has been trying to establish her program as a legitimate mid-major power so she wants to play against power conference opponents in the hopes that they will compete well and burnish their reputation. So if they're going to travel they want to play the Beavs as opposed to a Portland State. And the notion of being a mid-major power wasn't conjured out of pure fantasy either - as a 14-seed in 2022, Jackson State nearly beat LSU on their home court in an NCAA first-round game (led by 8 with less than 4 minutes to go before fading) so after that they set their sights much higher. For the Beavs, Jackson State is a perfectly acceptable nonconference opponent. Instead of getting caught up in their results this season, you have to think back to what the Beavs were thinking at the time this game was scheduled. That LSU game really boosted their reputation so Jackson State was thought of as a likely top-100 NET team and playing such teams is a good strategy as far as trying to earn an NCAA tournament bid and in trying to earn a better seeding. Of course no one has a crystal ball so as of today Jackson State has a NET of 131. So while scheduling is educated guesswork, it is still guesswork. I would also note that other Pac-12 basketball programs have chosen to schedule more SWAC teams even if the games are not a formal part of the Pac-12/SWAC Legacy Series. That could explain why UAPB also showed up on our schedule.

Last year, we only scored 63 against them, shooting 31.3% from the floor, 23.8% on 3's, and 64% on free throws. This year's team scores the ball much better. Note we also outrebounded them by 13; this year we're averaging close to + 19 on the boards.

One thing SR looks for in these preseason games is teams that can stretch what the Beav's can do. I this game JS is good at rebounding so it will be interesting to see how the Beav's handle that because their defense is based on being able to win the rebound battle.

Beers might have 3 fouls if this was a Pac12 game. She needs to quit reaching, and going over the top.
