I will probably regret saying this since we haven't played yet. But based on today's results the MWc is not playing good football. It's likely that whatever league we end up being in the other 4 leagues are going to deny our chance of being in the playoffs. They will reduce the auto qualifiers to 5...so really no different. In fact one could argue the path to the playoffs will now be much easier for OSU. Whether OSU can maintain the level JS has brought us is another question. This OSU team quite possibly could be undefeated in MWC.

I don't think waiting is a feasible option at all. But if OSU and WSU have some sort of significant leverage, then I would be working toward building a Pac conference that is locked in as the No. 5 conference nationally. To me, it would be a plus to add Boise State and Fresno State due to program successes and national name recognition. San Diego State for those reasons and location in a major market. San Jose State and UNLV because they are located in major markets. After that, I don't see much in the remaining teams. I guess I'm somewhat ambivalent about Colorado State, Nevada, Air Force and Utah State. Hawaii offers little except a nice trip. Wyoming is somewhat of a travel problem, has no metro area tie and no real national name except Josh Allen played there. I know the AAC commissioner says they are not looking West and blah, blah, blah. But teams like UTSA, Tulane, Tulsa and Memphis offer way more than schools like Wyoming, IMO. Of course, travel would have to be done using pods. I'm not saying it has to be these specific schools (or the AAC) or that all schools need to be added immediately. And who knows what schools might come available in a couple years? I just think there has to be a strong plan for the future that is intertwined with taking care of immediate needs (and I do believe Barnes is taking care to touch every base possible).

I'm with you gray, first option for me is a B12 invite but that has a 5% probability for me right now... Rebuild P12 and retain the P12 assets and ncaa payouts that the others walked away from. "Absorb" the MWC however that looks like and preferably the best teams, maybe poach some aac schools (some mwc and aac schools submitted P12 membership paperwork back in July). Heard that the aac commish came out with the "no west expansion" comment because we (us and wazzu) flat out turn him down... Barnes has stated that long travel is a deal breaker so I think CO is probably the furthest west we go... Baseball is a concern - lack of quality opponents in MWC/AAC could weigh us down but, then again, we may just dominate them... I'm a bit concerned with wrestling (I'm a big fan of Pendleton) but we may actually go to B12 for that hopefully... Who knows what will happen, this is all probably going to blow up again in 2-3 years, we need to maintain high level program(s) until then...

Yeah, totally agree on the Big 12...it's by far the preferable outcome for OSU. What you mentioned about wrestling is interesting...right now the Big 12 is targeting the ACC. So in the meantime, OSU get its foot in the door with wrestling and possibly gymnastics, then maybe they would be in a good position to join fully at some point.

It might happen in wrestling - Pendleton is a national champion Poke and a former assistant in Stillwater... and it makes sense with ASU in the P12... Gymnastics would too with utes there too... I like your thinking!

What conference is going to finish ahead of an undefeated Oregon State in 2024? To be fair ask Kellen Moore and the BSU team that had to go undefeated or near undefeated 3 years in a row to get a shot at a January bowl game. I know a 12 team playoff eliminates a lot of that concern but you don't think a 2 loss tOSU or Alabama gets ESPN talking them over an underated OSU with the likes of BSU and WSU as our premier wins? There are also now what 1 less team in the power 4 conferences than there was in the combined power 5 a year ago? Further justification that the power 4 deserve 10-11 out of 12 spots right ?

My understanding of the 2024 Playoffs: If the 2024 Playoffs were held in 2008: Byes: Oklahoma, Florida, USC, and UtahBracket: Cincinnati @ Texas. Winner plays Utah, likely in Fiesta Bowl. TCU @ Alabama. Winner plays USC, likely in the Rose Bowl. Ohio State @ Texas Tech. Winner plays Florida, likely in the Peach Bowl. Boise @ Penn State. Winner plays Oklahoma, likely in the Sugar Bowl. If the 2024 Playoffs were held in 2009: Byes: Alabama, Texas, Cincinnati, and TCUBracket: Penn State @ Florida. Winner plays TCU, likely in the Fiesta Bowl. Virginia Tech @ Boise. Winner plays Cincinnati, likely in the Rose Bowl. Iowa @ Oregon. Winner plays Texas, likely in the Sugar Bowl. Georgia Tech @ Ohio State. Winner plays Alabama, likely in the Peach Bowl. If the 2024 Playoffs were held in 2011: Byes: LSU, Oklahoma State, Oregon, and BoiseBracket: Michigan @ Alabama. Winner plays Boise, likely in the Fiesta Bowl. Virginia Tech @ Stanford. Winner plays Oregon, likely in the Rose Bowl. Kansas State @ Arkansas. Winner plays Oklahoma State, likely in the Peach Bowl. South Carolina @ Wisconsin. Winner plays LSU, likely in the Sugar Bowl. I think that it would have worked out alright. An undefeated non-power team should always have a spot in a 12-team CFP.

Could the departing pac 12 schools be guilted into scheduling home and home series with us for a year or two? Maybe not a full schedule worth, but to help fill the holes. It would seem the least they could do for leaving us high and dry.

As for letting it ride for 2 years, it's tremendously risky. I have not heard of any school wanting to join the pacific conference. There is no media deal and I doubt one will come along. If the pac is filled out with non p5 programs how can it be sold as a p5 conference, if so it will only be in name. The only offer I've heard of is from the mwc. If we try to poach some of their schools we had better be ready for that offer to get pulled.

It would seem the least they could do for leaving us high and dry. Oregon does not really have an opening until 2029, unless something pops open. I would like to keep scheduling Washington home-and-home starting in 2024. They have a rather open schedule. California and Stanford should have extra nonconference games to schedule starting next year, unless the ACC switches off the eight-game conference schedule. If Washington schedules someone else or we are stalling, California and Stanford should be scheduled for home-and-homes starting in 2024. UCLA has an opening in 2024 and one in 2027. Arizona State and USC are booked until 2027, unless something comes open. Arizona has holes in their schedule until 2028. Utah's schedule is pretty open. Colorado has openings from 2025-2029. Oregon State already has Idaho State, @ Boise, and Purdue on the schedule and should have Wazzu, as well to end the 2024 season. Without buyouts, you could schedule 2024 Arizona @ Boise California Idaho State Purdue @ Stanford @ UCLA @ Utah @ Washington Wazzu 2025 @ Arizona @ California Colorado Fresno State Portland State Stanford Utah @ Texas Tech Washington @ Wazzu Then, you just need two. Mountain West teams, which either need or can schedule one game: 2024 Hawai'i Nevada New Mexico UNLV Utah State 2025 Hawai'i Nevada San Diego State UNLV Utah State Wyoming Choices for a home-and-home are Hawai'i, Nevada, UNLV, and Utah State with the last three probably presenting fewer logistical problems than Hawai'i itself. The other choice would be to mix and match.

If you can make the playoff one year, you keep all of that money. No splitting. You keep all of your bowl money. Basically betting on yourself to do well. That can pay huge dividends, if you get a great team one of those two years. Or you could crash and burn.
