I would have believed it if Canzano heard it from his “reliable sources and posted it first(sarcasm meter pegged)

Another source saying that the big 10 may offer Stanford and Cal. This is the third or fourth that I've read in the last week. When I've mentioned it there are some here that deny it, maybe they will listen now but I doubt it.

The ACC is about to implode. Their four majors will be next to get absorbed by Big 10 and SEC (Clemson, FSU, Miami, UNC) The ACC has a grant of rights that runs through 2036 and the media deal is turning out to be awful for them to stay competitive. Nobody can leave on their own. FSU has been trying. Adding the Pac12 as a merger creates the scenario to renegotiate the media deal. It might give FSU the chance to leave they have been looking for. However, a new deal might be enough for them to stay. Of course the ACC could come back with "We have a deal in place that could merge the Pac 12 and improve each team's take to X million dollars. You can agree to take it and stay in the ACC or we can sit where we are until 2036. I don't think that the ACC would merge without signed commitment (not a Pac 12 verbal commitment) from the all teams to stay - losing 3 big name football teams to gain 4 Pac 12 is probably not a good trade. Adding the Pac 4 adds absolutely zero value to a new ACC TV deal. Florida State and Clemson give zero Fs about Oregon State or Cal. I'll bet anyone $100 the Grant of Rights deal is non existent by 2025. The Big 4 in ACC will find their way out and into the Big 10 and SEC.

LOL. That is not Sports Illustrated. This is some dude on SI's website badly rephrasing the one tweet pouring water on the idea.

A merger is what gets them out of the current deal that runs through 2036... that's the value. Renegotiating and getting more money from a media deal because now they can from the merger absolutely adds value. FSU has been trying for 2. years to get out and haven't been able to find a way. There are also buyouts that are rather expensive. www.on3.com/os/news/sources-aac-interested-in-adding-the-four-remaining-pac-12-schools-cal-stanford-washington-state-oregon-state/

Apparently the ACC are only looking at Cal and Stanford.
I also read somewhere they were only looking at Stanford.
I don't see any way the B1G jerks take Stanford and Cal until they see how the current setup works. Cal and Stanford probably want to associate with higher higher ed schools than schools like Boise St.
If they leave, it's all but certain we'll just go mountain West.

But what makes the ACC...or anyone else on the planet think they will get a better deal? The ACC payout is already on par with the Big 12...and the Networks hold all the cards. They have no reason to increase their payout simply because the ACC added the four worst Pac 12 teams. FSU is gone. Clemson is gone. UNC and Miami are likely gone. They will work a deal with ACC to leave...or force the ACC to spend millions fighting them on court. The ACC inventory is top heavy...much like the Pac 12. No one is watching NCST or WF or BC or Syracuse. They will be the next ones on the chopping block

It is a $120 million penalty to leave right now and you also have to get the grant of rights contract overturned. That kind of money can pay for a lot of attorneys. The ACC hopes that by adding schools, they can renegotiate. However, adding Cal and Stanford is unlikely to move the needle enough to get ESPN to renegotiate their contract.

There is definitely some validity to that...but there are also more credible reporters than others. Thamel is a senior writer for ESPN just covering college football. I know of hardly any writers who specifically attribute sources (i.e. Canzano, Wilner, etc.). It's all just message board speculation anyhow.

Competition and loss of the ACC most likely could get them a much stronger deal than they have right now.

The fresh rumor is stale and close to being moldy.

He could get it wrong, but ESPN is paying him to not get it wrong. It is not like Dodd or McMurphy or some other idiots posing as reporters.
