If you pitch, you'll probably have Tommy John surgery at some point. Kids pitch year-round with travel ball now, so I agree with whomever it was above that said it's a long-term injury rather than a one-time deal. Every Little League or JBO or whatever all the way through high school has a mandated pitch count. Kids can't throw nearly as many pitches in a day/week as they used to, and yet it seems like the incidence of injury is increasing. My (uneducated) guess is that the travel leagues and private pitching coaches and everything else that kids do year-round now just adds up over time. Here's a (partial) list of guys who have gone under the knife Kevin Abel Joey Mundt Jace Fry Drew Rasmussen Andrew Walling Will Frisch Daniel Turpen Sam Tweedt Jake Thompson Josh Osich Taylor Starr Not all of those guys had excessive workloads I suspect they’ll never fully find a cause since there is so much variation in mechanics and human beings in general. I think the key is to minimize the risk, and that’s why fewer pitchers pitch the entire game. If technique and mechanics is part of the equation, human beings tend to get sloppy when they are fatigued and fatigue can be caused by mental duress, throwing with extra exertion, or throwing a lot of pitches. We are all different and each game is different. I suspect that he had a relatively easy game (mentally), and was maintaining form well enough. on the other hand, Japan believes in throwing and throwing and throwing. Remember Daisuke anybody? He didn’t like being limited by Boston coaches. He thought it strengthened his arm. Who knows?

Dallas Buck was hurt before the College World Series started. It was one of the reasons why Nickerson had to throw so much. Yes, but how/why did he get hurt? I don’t remember but I thought there was grumbling about overuse. I could easily be wrong.

UCL strains and ruptures result from throwing too hard, for too long and too often. It starts with youth baseball and ends with college and pro ball, and in now more frequently in high school.
Inadequate arm care doesn't help.

I am a bit of a darwinist on this topic. My kids were competitive swimmers. It was not rare for the highest level competitive swimmers to get repetative use injuries (usually shoulder injuries) and need surgery or leave the sport. In order to be a top swimmer, you have to swim a lot, if you swim a lot your body may breakdown. But there is no way around it, to be a great swimmer you have to swim the miles. I think that is true of baseball pitchers also. To become a mlb pitcher you will have to throw a massive number of pitches, there is just no short cut. If your body can't take the massive number of pitches you won't be a mlb pitcher. I just don't think there is a work around.
Rumor is the Russians wear out 10 top girls doing ice skating jumps for every one that is able to compete internationally.
I just watched the first episode of Bill Waltons 30 for 30, and they had a mini reunion of the Blazers championship squad, every single one of them had either knee or hip replacements, most of them multiple.
Sports at the highest level is a grind on the body. No matter how talented you are, if your body can't take the grind you won't reach the top, and even if you reach the top you are very very likely to pay a severe physical price later in life. That is just the way it is.

Nope! Back to club swim! Oh, the finals (finally). Good time for a break! Nope! Now it’s long course season! Sectionals, Futures, Sr Sectionals, blah blah blah. It never ends. But damn proud of that kid! Driving an hour to her club every day, many times leaving before 5 am-on a school day. But she made it pay off, and she LOVES it. My wallet does too now!

My family gave me a T-shirt that says: Lord, if I have but one day left to live, Let me spend it at a swim meet. Because those things last forever! Ha ha!

Pitch counts will vary based on the amount of rest a pitcher has between appearances, Matthews threw 166 pitches on the previous weekend, going 7 against Fullerton, then 4 more in relief v Texas A&M in the Regional. He had a week of rest before his Texas start in the Super.
College pitchers normally get a week's rest between starts which falls within the ideal guideline of 7 or 8 days. In MLB, pitchers will exit at 120 or less because they throw with less rest between appearances.

Matthews might have a healthy arm, but the body may not have recovered fully from the heavy pitch load. He was not effective today.

Use that Stanford education and buy a clue, Trees! Y'all deserved to lose. Stanford has bigger problems than their uniform color. 1) They can't navigate their Regional & Super Regional efficiently. 2) When they get to the CWS, they lose to better teams from the SEC & ACC.

Stanford has bigger problems than their uniform color. 1) They can't navigate their Regional & Super Regional efficiently. 2) When they get to the CWS, they lose to better teams from the SEC & ACC. In 2018, they were given one of the four best three-seeds in Cal State Fullerton. Many Beaver fans breathed a huge sigh of relief that an underrated Fullerton travelled to Sunken Diamond rather than Goss. In 2019, Stanford, specifically, and the Pac-12, in general, got royally screwed. Pac-12 #2 had to travel to play at SEC #4. Ridiculous stupidity. Stanford lost, because this whole thing is rigged to kill off the Pac-12 teams. In 2021, Stanford got screwed again in the seeding but overcame it to advance to Omaha. In the de facto Bracket One Championship Game, the Cardinal foolishly tried to have Brendan Beck throw a three inning save. Beck struck out the first five Vandy hitters and then got the next three, one out away from a Championship Series berth against Mississippi State. And a gassed Beck lost it on walk, infield single, single to right, and wild pitch. Stupid coaching. In no way was SEC #4 superior to Stanford. In 2022, Stanford beat Oregon State one too many times and got a pillowy soft path to Omaha, whereas Oregon State was thrown to the wolves. In Omaha, Stanford got crushed by a very hot-and-cold Arkansas (SEC #3), who decided to be hot in game one. The Cardinal then made the Beavs look good by dropping their finale to Auburn by four. Meh. They're dopes. I wish that they would be dopes during the regular season and Tournament, as opposed to winning all the damn time in the regular season and Tournament and then forgetting how to play baseball once the Regionals are set. Still, Stanford is the lone team to finish ahead of Oregon State for five consecutive seasons. And the last time that Oregon State won a Pac-12 Championship, who finished second? Stanford.

Didn't OSU play in black in a must win against Georgia in 2006 that was a day game? They play the day games later now. The heat index was 10 degrees higher for yesterday's game than Oregon State's against Georgia in 2006. You can get away with playing in black with a heat index in the low 80s with almost no humidity. Low 90s, though? From your Federal Government: Likelihood of Heat Disorders with Prolonged Exposure or Strenuous Activity: Extreme Caution. Both Oregon State losses in 2018 were in black. The first game was played with a heat index of 103, another 10 degrees hotter than the Stanford game yesterday. A heat index of 103-104 is where Extreme Caution slides over into Danger. Still stupid.
