Quinn Mathews threw a complete game. He gave up three runs on eight hits and one walk. I like him better, when he is throwing against Texas.

He was a helluva pitcher, that Quinn. We'll miss him.

While I advocate for player health and not over using players, especially young pitchers... I sure wish human brains didn't have such an affinity for counting stats and large round numbers.
Granted 156 is probably, maybe, definitely too many? Either way it is a game that young man will probably never forget or regret. It will be a treasured memory.
Of course the blade cuts both ways. Our human brains are also nostalgic and completionist. Mathews will partially remember this game because he completed it, when in actuality 7.2 or 8.1 is practically as impressive as 9.0

I remember BR Cook throwing 170+ in a game at Goss.

Tommy John, anyone? Our freshman ace Abel comes to mind - but here again, not sure he would go back and change anything. It helped us win the CWS

Kevin Abel threw 152 pitches on two consecutive days on three days' rest after throwing 95 pitches. 247 pitches on three days' rest!
Jonah Nickerson threw 109 pitches on two days' rest after throwing 114 pitches. Nickerson then turned around and threw another 100 pitches on three days' rest, 323 pitches on five days' rest!
Anyone throwing stones needs to get out of this glass house.
Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches as a 27-year-old in one game! And he immediately caught fire or something.
This conversation is stupid.
Some pitchers can pitch until their arm falls off. And other pitchers' arms just fall off. Until there is some study on why this was not good for Quinn Mathews' specific arm, everyone else can STFU.

It's a long term deterioration. It’s also very dependent on mechanics. Some guys can throw for days if they have good mechanics. If you throw like Lincecum, it’s going to catch up with you at some point.

I remember all of the criticism of Pat Casey and staff received for allowing Kevin to pitch that many times. And of course, the criticism was from mostly Arkansas boosters and fans.

And Dallas Buck maybe? Dallas Buck was hurt before the College World Series started. It was one of the reasons why Nickerson had to throw so much.

If you pitch, you'll probably have Tommy John surgery at some point. Kids pitch year-round with travel ball now, so I agree with whomever it was above that said it's a long-term injury rather than a one-time deal. Every Little League or JBO or whatever all the way through high school has a mandated pitch count. Kids can't throw nearly as many pitches in a day/week as they used to, and yet it seems like the incidence of injury is increasing. My (uneducated) guess is that the travel leagues and private pitching coaches and everything else that kids do year-round now just adds up over time.
Here's a (partial) list of guys who have gone under the knife Kevin Abel Joey Mundt Jace Fry Drew Rasmussen Andrew Walling Will Frisch Daniel Turpen Sam Tweedt Jake Thompson Josh Osich Taylor Starr
Not all of those guys had excessive workloads

Lots of guys do preventative Tommy John... The idea being a rupture event is more damaging because of all of the ancillary tissues and swelling and such, or throwing on a partially torn UCL is more damaging, then getting the surgery done before an actual injury.
