Hey drunk isn't this tinkles 9th year? Your comment said some here expect him to fix things in one year. Last year was entirely on him due to poor recruiting last year and prior years. A year like last year is kind of acceptable if a new coach takes on a mess. But last year was a mess that a coach in his 8th year created. I have said several times last year was on him. The Elite 8 trip bought him a year, any other year probably not. It was broke, I also don't think you can fix broke in one year, at least at OSU given the support level the basketball program has historically received. The previous bad year (Tinkle's 3rd season) I still maintain was on circumstances beyond Tinkles control. 2-3 recruiting classes before his arrival didn't pan out, then he was hired AFTER recruiting season, then injuries to his 2 best players that had all of 1 year of experience (Tres out for basicall the whole season). In the end he "fixed it" over the following seasons. Then I tend to look at his entire tenure here. 5 winning seasons in 8 with a program that had 2 in the previous 24 years. 2 NCAA trips in the 7 the tournament was held when it had been to ZERO in the previous 25 (?) years. I have been critical with what I consider to be his teams' lack of offensive direction (exception being the second half of the Elite 8 year), lazy passes, struggles with the press and inbounding. But you know what, if my dog pees in the kitchen every few years, I don't kick it, or pitch it off in the woods. Some people do, not saying that's you, but some people have huge reactions to the bad and ignore what's going right. I don't know if Tinkle will be around in a few years, but OSU has not given the basketball program anywhere near the support most teams in this league have been given, and expecting things to change just by firing him I find kind of short sighted. Waiting til the buyout is lower then dumping him for another coach they're not going to support is just dumb. Unless OSU actually would pony up to bring the basketball support budget (I'm not talking coach salaries) up into the top half of the league, nobody should expect regular top half of the league performance. At that point, instead of bringing in a new unproven guy while paying a buyout for the next 5 years, they might as well take the next two years worth of buyout equivalent and pump it into recruiting and other basketball related budgets the other schools are throwing money at and see what Tinkle can do. Given a level playing field he may have better results, if not, then dump him. If he cheats or there is a major scandal, dump him. There are a couple coaches in this league that should have been fired for one or both of those reasons, some weren't. Heck, OSU's been to the NCAAs twice since 2015 under tinkle. The only teams in the league that have topped that are AZ, USC, UCLA and uo - all have had cheating accusations thrown at them in that time. Good citizenship and "mostly winning" seasons should count for something. If the team regresses from here it's probably time to move on, but on the whole I feel he's done a good job under a situation where few coaches are likely to succeed.

@drunk - I agree with the funding. We have 2 seasons of WT after this one so start making budget increases and see if he can make it a decent program before he's done. It would cost more than the buyout and atleast when they are searching for a new guy the budget is less embarrassing and we have a record of giving resources for the coach. If tinkle goes all world with more funding then he can stay as long as he wants.

I promise that when I win the lottery tonight I will donate enough that the athletic budget won't be an excuse.

Weird. Usually when coaches get hired by s%#tty losing programs get left a treasure trove of players to choose from.

The highest scoring Beaver to be passed down from Robinson averaged 4.0 points. Most of them, including the high scorer, only had 2 years of eligibility left. No Robinson recruits except the oft-injured N'Diaye were here in Tinkle's 3rd season. The only recruits left to Tinkle were Payton, who was a good get but had to be re-recruited and still had only 2 years available, and a kid who sadly had a health issue and never played. Tinkle left himself rather poorly this season, much of it because of the transfer portal, but if he had been fired a week into May at least the new coach would've inherited Taylor, Andela and Akanno (possibly others, I don't remember exactly when Lucas, Alitishe, Rand and Johnson officially transferred out) and several promising freshmen recruits. Anyway, Tinkle left himself in a situation much like the season he got here under, but I personally think there's more to work with for the long term this time around. Whether it's him or another coach 2-3 years from now, IF the kids stay with the program it should be a good team.

Just wanted to have some fun while pointing out the obvious. I went to a private fundraiser with coach Riley a million years ago. He talked about how coach Pettibone knew they were out and basically did zero recruiting. There were empty binders that should have been full of potential recruits. But they had one guy committed. Marty Mauer. He said they called him “Gulliver” because he was a giant in his tape vs the competition. I think he went to a smaller Catholic school. Anyway, Riley said when the staff would get depressed, someone would say “Let’s watch Gulliver!” And it would pick them up. I thought it was so awesome that he was honest about that story. I was lucky to be there. Btw, Mauer was awesome for OSU!

Marty went to Cascade Christian in Jacksonville Oregon, 2A ball. If you have met the Mauerer coan you'll know they are big people. Infact we offered 6'11 Center Austin Mauerer who is in the 2024 class.

Cascade Christian moved to Medford in 2007. Cascade Christian is 3A now.
