I think that they might have to re-think TVO's role on offense. I am starting to believe that she would be way more effective as more of a spot-up shooter like Kat Tudor and not so much someone who has the ball in her hands a lot to create offense. Her penchant for turnovers cancels out the plays she does make off the dribble IMO. The problem is that I don't think she is comfortable playing like that and it looked like it was part of her struggles tonight when Yeaney and Pietsch were doing the bulk of the ballhandling. But if they can start to click with an inside-out offense with Beers, that could benefit TVO in getting better looks from the perimeter.

Imo it boils down to the fact that we are in the lower half of the conference in terms of talent. If we are going to return to the top half of the conference, we need to recruit better HS players and transfers. TVO, Beers and hopefully Gardiner are quality players, the rest of the roster would struggle to get significant minutes for the better teams in the conference. Unfortunately, the incoming freshmen class for next year is not highly ranked. The question is, can SR and his staff recruit and retain enough elite players to get us back competing near the top of the conference?

I would maybe add Aaron to the list (she's played really well lately), but yeah. Yeaney can do a lot but isn't a particularly good shooter. Pietsch and Mannen and probably Marotte are basically role players. Mit can be very good but is not the answer against USC-type teams. And who knows about Hansford and Blacklock?

I’m not sure why we should ever have Noelle and Martha on the floor together. we shouldn't. Rueck kept bringing that group in during the game and USC would run off several points.

OSU just couldn’t handle USC’s m2m defense. It showed up in the TO’s and 3 pt shooting. They just couldn’t get very many clean looks from outside—USC just smothered them.
Beers was the bright spot. She was able to get good position on the entry passes and knocked down her free throws. Solid game. She runs the floor too, she looked like Gulich a few times there. She’s going to be a good one.
Also interesting that Marotte went from starting to deep on the bench and only played 8 minutes—although having 3 to’s in that time didn’t help keep herself on the floor.

Ladies are careless with the basketball, can’t shoot for s%#t beyond the arc, and are painfully slow-footed on D. On the other hand……..

Aaron has skills; we need quicker guards. Bendu should always be the one bringing the ball up court. Martha started OK but then started giving up the ball. The offense seems to be "spectatin' " (whenever the guards get pressured) and fails to come to the ball. Weird to see it at this level.

I'm sure that the coaches are recruiting to level players, the issue is getting them to come to Corvallis. Big difference between recruiting and landing them. As for retaining them I bet a vast majority of coaches would like to know the answer to that problem.

Well Scott was doing that, and now he's been passed up by other coaches in the conference. Hoping he finds the magic again, because right now we're in a bad spot.

Oddities of the game-
Martha being clotheslined by Rayah hard enough that I heard the impact and no call. Rayah also elbowed Reagan hard enough that it moved her about a foot, and that isn't easy to do. I think Rayah is really good and for some reason, despite being at USC, doesn't get the press that she deserves. I also think she plays really rough sometimes and gets away with it too much.
The Beav's are 28th in the country in assists to turnovers, but in this game it wasn't happening. Yes, USC is good at steals but we were throwing the ball when there was no one to catch it etc. So I'm hoping this is an anomaly and we get it together.
Rayah continued a long tradition of players having a career game against the Beav's. 33 points and her next best is 19 and in that game she shot 7/20, which is her normal shooting %. Yeah, she will probably never shoot another game like this.
With their top scorer, Sissoko, hurt this was really a missed chance.
Talia was open for a 3 and didn't realize, then she realized and she tried to shoot it after her defender was back on her and missed. It was like her brain was on a 2 second delay the whole game.
With the weird lineups that Scott was playing I wonder if some of the team was sick? With Bendu, Noelle and Martha all playing together, they may have made the shortest lineup that I've ever seen Scott play.
OSU limited USC to half their normal offensive rebounds. The thing that I thought would kill us was a non-factor.
If Mit could learn to get herself in place for the hook shot consistently she would be unstoppable. And the team getting the ball quickly to her when she's in place.

Observations:
1. The team is not connected (yet). Multiple passes that went to nobody. OSU Players don't know each other and it shows when they play a tough defensive team like USC. 2. Martha is one tough cookie. Martha was getting fouled and harassed all night, and as a freshman PG, she did remarkably well. On the other hand, Mitrovic is a delicate flower. Jelena needs to get in the weight room and work on her upper body strength. 3. Raegan Beers has AA written all over her. I don't know how many times she cleared out her defender, and her teammates were late getting her the ball. Beers had 3 (yes 3) 3-point plays when she was fouled, made the bucket, and the free throw. 4. AJ looks defeated. Has got very few minutes. Seems the coaches have lost confidence in AJ. 5. I don't know what role Bendu is playing on this team? No denying her experience, but Bendu is not a PG. 6. TvO should not be playing PG either against a quick defensive team. Coaches need to adjust TvO's role to the teams we are playing. TvO is a weapon, but has to be strategically deployed each night depending on the makeup of the opponent 7. I really enjoy seeing Adlee on the floor. Adlee was clearly intimidated for the first few minutes, but once she got in the flow, you could see her energy. I hope she continues to get minutes
The bottom line is this team is not connected on the floor (yet). At some point, coaches are going to have to flip the switch and play for next season. Meaning, give the five freshmen & 2nd year players lots of minutes. Not there yet, but if we come back from AZ and are 0-5 in PAC-12....

As good as Talia is, she looked really disinterested at times yesterday. Maybe it was because she didn't like sitting on the bench so long, but there we're a few times a player was getting double teamed on the press and she showed no interest in helping out.
I'm really not sure how many players on this team would have gotten minutes on OSU teams with the exception of the 21-22 and 22-23 teams. Probably not many besides Talia and Raegan. Our inability to recruit guards has really come back to bite us.
Southern Cal clearly had more talent and was more athletic, but the Beavs could have overcome that with better ball security and (at times) better effort.

I saw the same on the USC traps, and not just TvO. Players not coming to the ball to help out the trapped player. Several of those resulted in the trapped player coughing up the ball. It was odd to see the lack of help.

Gardiner is missing in action and I don't see ANY sign (other than hopefull posters) that she will play, will she portal out? (was she on the bench, couldn't tell?). Kimi Suli!! This is a bad, young team and may go 4 or 5 wins IF they improve, or 0fer the PAC this year!!! Who is bad enough that we can compete with them right now? Don't see it happening, disorganized, no control, out of position, limited skills, no PG, dreadfully slow.. other than that it's all good I guess.. Beers is a baller, Mit is tall, TVO is good, sometimes, if pressured, not so much! (I'd press her all over the court) The other freshmen, in limited playing time, and portal ladies are at best serviceable. But, how do you throw in the towel at this point, play the rookies extensively and sacrifice the rest of the season, tough sledding ahead and likely team turmoil. SR will be on the hot seat soon, if not now,, Hope to hell I'm WRONG!!! That game was hard to watch. Looked like Saturday morning rat ball..
