Andrea was sitting with some guys from the men's team. They showed them on the center court board and, when people noticed her, she got a nice ovation. No Timea, no Shallexxus, no Bendu, so only 8 players suited up. All played quite a bit. The defense was unimpressive overall. Raegan got beat a few times and Jelena seemed to be out of position a lot. Lily seems to have a nose for the ball and grabbed a bunch of rebounds. She also was not afraid to put up that corner 3. Didn't start going down for her until the end, but I liked what I saw. Raegan was OK, but looked like a freshman. I think she needs to get comfortable, and she'll be fine. AJ looked like what we were all hoping for. I think I was more impressed with her than any other player. Jelens was, I think, 8 for 8 from the free throw line, with a nice smooth stroke and soft shot - that was very good to see. A somewhat ragged start considering the competition, but that's what you have pre-conference games for. Pretty good crowd for an exhibition, 2,500 or so. No band, and no charged atmosphere in Gill, but good to be back. It was a non-game game. So, it never happened.

If we’re still down Bendu and Timea, the Hawaii game will be very interesting. They were selected to win the Big West this season and made the NCAA tournament last year. Yes - I think "very interesting" is a good characterization. Let's hope we are better from beyond the arc - we were very cold in the WOU game. Looking at the UH roster, more size than WOU with 6'2", 6'3" and 6'4". hawaiiathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/rosterWe are their season opener, though they have a exhibition with Hawaii Pacific tomorrow. From the game notes: "The Rainbow Wahine went 20-10 during the 2021-22 campaign, along with a 13-3 conference record, leading to both a regular season title and a tournament title. UH returns 11 players from last season's championship team, including eight who started one or more games a year ago." We will learn a lot more about our team next Monday! Go Beavers!

Really disappointed to read that Jelena is still lowering the ball to waist level or below and apparently even dribbling sometimes when she receives the ball in the post area. I fear it was way too much to expect that she would progress like either Ruth Hamblin or Marie Gulich.
This is nothing personal against Jelena. She is obviously doing the best she can do-seemingly the talent/dedication/? is just not there for her to likely ever be more than an average player.
I can identify with that since no matter how much I desired to be a better player than I was, the necessary attributes just weren't there.
Looks like a long year for the Beavs if, as it appears she has made little improvement.

All she needs to do is turn and shoot. Jelena has a great free throw stroke now, and can help the team by getting to the foul line. Team was short-handed yesterday, so when we are a full squad I hope the coaches don't have Jelena in the game when the opposing team has 5 guards on the floor.

Agree - I thought she had taken great strides late last season in not dribbling in traffic and keeping the ball high. Yesterday felt like she had regressed on those two points to early last season form. Hopefully she just needs a reminder on the topic, but the regression is concerning.....especially since the WOU guards/forwards are not among the craftiest or quickest defenders she will be facing this season, and they made hay with her tendency..... Go Beavers!

Yeah, I mean...really? It was only one game, and not even a real one that actually counts. Maybe give it a little time and let the team gel? So...we can't have a successful season because Jelena tried putting the ball on the floor before the season even started? To say that she has regressed after one exhibition game is kind of ridiculous.

Let's not write Jelena off after just one outing. Her mistakes are correctible. All the coaches need to drill her on is establish position, keep hands up after she catches the ball, turn and shoot. If she gets fouled, based on how she looked yesterday, that's now a good thing rather than an uh-oh moment.
It's kind of like golf. If you have too many swing thoughts, it messes you up. If the coaches can just drill her on a few basic things, I think the results will be there. Jelena alone was never going to lead us to the Promised Land. But I think she'll be a steady performer this year, averaging about 10 or 11 and 7 or 8 rebounds.
We'd all be very happy with that.

Need to see 7 or 8 games against D1 comp to make any sort of assessment. Even after that the Pac 12 is even another level. We’ve all been down this road before. Good game. Excited that the season is starting, but not yet ready to project (good or bad.)

Many thanks to beavsteve for providing that video , it appears we will get to live stream the next, Hawaii. If Beavsteve doesn't provide it again, for folks that have windows, as I mentioned before, the microsoft gamebar will record any video you have onscreen. It doesn't work on all systems, and a caution, don't leave the page while recording. Google it to learn more. osubeavers.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule

"Recent versions of the Mac will allow you to record by pressing Shift + Command (⌘) + 5." ----------- Total Non-Tekkie here. Does vic1963's comment mean that someone could record the Hawaii game and then post it here so that those of us who work Monday night will be able to watch the re-play?? GO BEAVS!!

Excited that the season is starting, but not yet ready to project (good or bad.) I don't think anybody implied that Lily and AJ are amazing - just that they really liked the mindset and aggressiveness they brought to the game. For myself, I thought way too many on last year's team were far too reluctant to take a shot, leading to shot clock violations and scores in the 50's. I knew Talia would put it up, but felt coming in that, for the team to be successful, AJ would need to as well. If Sunday was any indicator, both she and Lily are perfectly willing to stand in the corner and do their Kat Tudor imitation, although without the arc on the shot (which was just about my favorite thing ever about watching our team). Hopefully, that will continue and spread to the rest of the players.

Thanks to everyone who has commented on the game. Reality is that we can't learn much from this game. With three players who are probably in your top 6 or 7 out, it's not easy to learn anything about this team. A good OSU team should have won this game by 40, but again, this wasn't the team we will see most of the season. Good to see Raegan do what she's done all through High School....grabbing rebounds. I've said it before, but I think she is going to be a monster. I'd like to envision her putting up Maegan Huff type numbers, but she probably won't ever put up those scoring numbers playing for the Beavs, but I think we can count on the rebounds. Good to see Lily was not afraid to put up her shots. I don't know that we can compare her to Kat, but I do think she is going to get plenty of opportunities putting up the 3 for the Beavs, and maybe sooner than I anticipated. Greybeav has shared with me a few times how Lily's HS coach didn't really use her correctly. I think he was mostly concerned with his own daughter, but this game gives hope that Lily knows her basketball and will have every chance to leaver her mark at Oregon State. The first time I saw Adlee play, I said she was a top 50 player. After her injury, I haven't seen the same great film. Hopefully, she will get her shot here. We all know she's another one who can shoot lights out when she is on a roll. As for AJ, as a freshman she was much more aggressive than Greta (a shot every 3.1 minutes to Greta's every 3.8 minutes). I hope she keeps that up as long as the shooting percentage is good. This was a good start for her Sophomore season. I should say non-start, since this game and these stats don't officially count.
Based on Sunday's game, I would expect the Beavs to lose at home to Hawaii in their opener on Monday. The early word sounds like Timea and Bendu will both be out, but until they return, it's hard to read this team. If the Beavs win by 15 or more Monday, I'll feel pretty good about where they are at in the early going. Talia is good enough to carry this team in many matches. We'll see if that is needed next game.

I don't understand why jelena gets a pass. She literally and physically towered over everyone on the court. yet based on comments from those that attended she often brought the ball down to the same level as others on the court. It's a bad habit that is going to hurt when bigger, better, stronger, quicker players are around.
