I just noticed when Beers and Mitrovic were both on the floor, they seemed a little timid like one was deferring to the other to lead. I agree on some assessments of Jelena; great free throw shooting, but a little spacy in the paint. AJ gets the hustle award!

"Talia von Oelhoffen led the Beavs with 23 points while AJ Marotte contributed 19. Jelena Mitrovic rounded out the Beavers in double figures with 16 points." Personally, I'll take those three all season long to be the top scorers for the Beavs. Veteran presence.

Also from the game article: "Beers grabbed four rebounds to finish with 12 and closed the game one point shy of a double-double." I don't know how many minutes she played, but these numbers are encouraging - even in an exhibition game.....
While I'm at it: thanks for your observations on the game 2nd gen Beav....They were far more than a summary, and they provided a dash of insight into several players who were not among the top 3 scorers....I hope you continue to post your comments and observations....
All in all, it's still October. It was an exhibition game against a mid-range team that might not have a single player who could earn a schollie at OSU - and 3 of our prime players never took the floor...... So, it's still wait and see for us, the team, and for Coach himself.... GO BEAVS!!

What does that mean by they cancel each other out? Anyone there pick up on that too. What about the freshmen in general I think he means they didn't ham & egg it together against smaller, quicker players. Didn't look like they were in sync with each other, and playing them together wasn't particularly effective, at least in this game. Got it! More effective going against a taller line up. Takes some time too.

Here is a link to a video of the game. There's a little missing and it has not been carefully edited, but it's better than nothing! It was just uploaded (about 8:15pm) so Google Drive is still processing it, but I believe it can be downloaded and viewed now. It is a .MOV file. For those who don't want to download it, you'll just have to keep checking back to see if they have finished processing it. Count me among those impressed with Lily Hansford. Long arms to snag rebounds and a nice quick shot.

My additions to 2ndgen's excellent summary-
Beers - Good ability to start, not so great at stops. Couple of times she got faked out for wide open mid-range shots. On the other hand her willingness to work at other things such as setting up screens for her teammates is terrific.
Mannen - Twice stole the ball and then passed it to AJ for an open layup. I keep thinking she's hit her ceiling and she keeps showing me how very wrong I am.
Lily - So far she seems like the real deal.
AJ - If she can keep hitting those shots off of her high rising jumpers she's going to help the team have a very happy year.
Mit & Beers - DO NOT BRING THE BALL DOWN WHEN UNDER THE BASKET! IT WILL BE STOLEN! DON'T DO IT! BAD IDEA....STOP DOING IT! Maybe we can get Jones to come back and give some training seminars.
Mit - Needs to learn to not freak out when the swarm of munchkins swarms around her.
Talia - Three bounce passes that didn't have a chance, but otherwise a solid game.
Black - Very tentative out there. I see why I haven't heard much about her from her teammates. Not at all what I expected from her high school games.
Martha - Fearless. Didn't do any silly frosh things that I noticed.
Overall, for missing two starters the teams defense did all right, especially for this early in the season. For the offense, only Talia and Lily could hit any open three point shots. WOU was really just concentrating on stopping the inside play so I don't think any of the three attempts were contested. Need to do better if we want to beat any good teams.

Really didn’t expect Lily to make the first big impression. I have been most concerned about her ability to adapt to the physicality of D1 ball. WOU isn’t that, but still great start. She has the length and shooting touch to be special if the rest of her game can hang.
Adlee seemed to not have the same swagger even in HS after her injury - hopefully she gets comfortable again.

What I liked about AJ last year was that she wasn't reluctant to put up a shot on a team where many seemed to lack confidence in their doing likewise. I liked that even more from her today. She looks like she intends to be a leader on this team.
I liked the same thing about Lily today. She took good shots. When they weren't going down, she put it behind her and put up the next good shot she had.
We were never close to a shot clock turnover today, and that was a welcome change from last year. Certainly hope we keep playing that way.
Beaveragain is spot on regarding our bigs bringing the ball down. Taylor learned that in high school. I would think that would be taught in Big 101.

Thanks for posting the game video beavsteve!....As others have mentioned we really couldn't tell much about our team as a whole since we were missing 2 or possibly 3 starters. I was a little disappointed in Jelena's play---at 6'9' she should have dominated out there against this short team---she didn't and looked about the same as last year and kept putting the ball on the floor down low and getting in trouble instead of just turning and shooting over her shorter opponents. AJ played well but still throws up alot of wild no chance of going in shots. Martha P. is a little sparkplug out there and with some good basketball skills---she can help this team at PG this year. Lily H is a good corner 3pt shooter for a freshman. I was impressed with freshman post R.Beers---She runs and moves well for a big girl AND most importantly she knows what to do with the ball when she gets it down low---I saw 2 or 3 quick turns and moves to the basket when she got the ball inside which are about 2 or 3 more than I ever saw from TJ in 3 years! She also seems to have a good nose for the ball---I think she is going to be a good one!

Injury/illness update from this Democrat-Herald article: "The Beavers played without transfers Shalexxus Aaron and Bendu Yeaney, as well as freshman Timea Gardiner. Coach Scott Rueck said their absences were due to a combination of minor injury and illness. He said Aaron is day-to-day and may be able to make her Oregon State debut when the Beavers host Hawaii on Monday, Nov. 7. The availability of both Yeaney and Gardiner is in doubt for that contest."

Great analysis by 2ndGen and others, little to add except my opinion on:
I liked how Lily closed out on 3 pt shooters, arm up, moving fast at them. Jelena definitely looks quicker and more agile this year. Martha looks very comfortable, maybe her international experience helps there. Noelle, took multiple charges, got the call twice in her favor in a short time period.

If we’re still down Bendu and Timea, the Hawaii game will be very interesting. They were selected to win the Big West this season and made the NCAA tournament last year.

All solid updates. Here is my daughter's summary from the game yesterday:
- disappointed to not see Lex, Timea, or Bendu yesterday, but also happy to see the new freshmen get so many minutes - Beers is a beast. With her back to the basket she knows where her defender(s) are and knows where she is relative to the hoop. No hesitation when she receives the ball (unlike Mit, Taylor, Kennedy) - Lily started and can see why because she is already a solid position defender on the perimeter. Lily is a "heady" player for a freshman - Martha is the real deal. Plays hard, head up at all times, made some great penetration and fantastic assists to wide open 3-point shooters. Martha is going to get minutes at the 1 this season. - My daughter absolutely loves AJ. AJ seems very fit, even taller, even more athletic. AJ has no fear and definitely stepping up as a leader - TvO is an absolute pure shooter if given time to set up. Her 3's never even touched the rim. Still dribbles into multiple defenders at times. But TvO can turn a game around for OSU in a few minutes. TvO made an incredible block on her defender going to the hoop. - Agree with another poster that the team on the floor isn't going to blow any other team off the floor. Need to remember Bendu will make a HUGE difference. As well, Lex & Timea hopefully. - Our freshmen are legit. My daughter (and me) are excited about the future.
