As 4 members of the 2018 Beavers establish themselves as MLB players, what about the 5th high draft pick? It's well recognized that the 'fifth' is Cadyn Grenier - my personal all-time favorite OSU (fielding) middle infielder. I peek into his game logs at AAA occasionally, and nothing seems to change at the plate (.210 - 240 BA most of the time). His fielding at SS, or sometimes at 2B, are well-known as his strong points. In the past few weeks he has exclusively played for Norfolk at 1B or LF. What's that to mean? If he doesn't have an adequate bat to advance as a SS or Second Baseman...he surely lacks it at a traditional power and/or high average position. I would take it to mean that they have other players that they want to take a look at in those positions. They have already concluded he has what it takes defensively and as such, not ready to give up on him. Any continued reps at the plate are a good thing.

Andrew Moore has signed with the Blue Jays and is in AAA Buffalo. Same team as Brandon Eisert. Moore made his first start today. Seven earned runs in 1.2 innings. Nuts! Eisert is supposed to be the Blue Jays' best LHP reliever prospects and may get a call up any day now........

If he doesn't have an adequate bat to advance as a SS or Second Baseman...he surely lacks it at a traditional power and/or high average position. Norfolk has at least four middle infielders, who probably would be starting elsewhere. Gunnar Henderson is the Orioles' best offensive prospect now that Adley is playing in Baltimore. Jordan Westburg, who played in the 2018 College World Series for Mississippi State was the 30th overall pick in the 2020 draft. He is the Orioles' second-best infield prospect. He sees a lot of time at third, when Henderson is playing short. Terrin Vavra, who played in the 2018 Corvallis Super Regional for Minnesota, was a third-rounder in 2018. He was traded to Baltimore from Colorado with two other players for Mychal Givens. He is probably the Oriole infielder most-likely to get called up this year. The fact that Grenier is not playing the four, five, or six basically indicates where he stands on the totem poll, behind Henderson, Westburg, and Vavra. Grenier has an MLB-ready glove, but he needs to consistently hit. He shows flashes, but it just has never all come together for long enough to warrant a call-up.

The other thing with Grenier is that, if he realistically wants to see time in the Bigs, he basically needs to be able to play every single position that he can well. He needs to be Daniel Robertson. Robertson could run and play six different positions at a major league level. If Grenier can do the same, there may still be a place for him, even if his bat never comes around to be a Robertson-level bat.

Saw this this AM. Harrisburg Senators released C K.J. Harrison. Interesting. Fun fact, K.J. Harrison had the first-ever grand slam at T.D. Ameritrade Field, now Charles Schwab Field. Also, I didn't realize this, but K.J.'s younger brother Kalae plays for Texas A&M. Another fun fact, Kalae Harrison transferred to NC State from A&M.

Stefan Romero has been on the 7-day IL since July 9th. Sam Gaviglio joined him there on Saturday.
Matt Boyd suffered a rehab setback last month. I have not seen any updates since.
Michael Conforto may be ready to play by September. He still needs a contract to play, though.
Caleb Hamilton is still backing up Gary Sanchez, while Ryan Jeffers recovers from his injury. I keep waiting for Hamilton and Larnach to play together, but I don't think that it has happened yet in Minnesota.

And Alex McGarry continues to rake at AA. Three HR's in the last four games. Since I started following the Beaver's minor leaguers progress, I don't remember someone ever making this large of positive gain in a season.
