I agree with both points of view to some extent. We should have an arm or two that can pitch a 9th inning without giving up a run.
We also should score more runs on Sunday. The last 4 weeks we've scored 5, 2, 8, & 1 in the last game of a series.(Xavier was a Saturday finale)
The bullpen cost us multiple games last year and the trend is continuing. Canham and Dorman need to learn an "old school" rule about college baseball.
"Don't remove pitchers* that are getting outs."
Carpenter was money against a good hitting GCU a couple of days ago, so they gave him another opportunity. So its understandable, but leaving Brown in is also understandable because he only threw 10 pitches. Why not give him a chance to throw 10-15 more pitches and finish off a game?
* Unless they're over their pitch count. We have to take care of young arms, regardless of how much we want to win.

If the guy behind the plate has a large zone, you need to adjust to it. How many called thirds were there that were letter high, and the batter shook his head or held his hands up as if confused when walking towards the dugout? As for Carpenter, it seemed as if when he didn’t get the outside call, he let it get to him and just lose the entire at bat. The Beavs let the unfortunate calls get to them, and it showed. I think this must be it. Carpenter didn’t adjust to the guy behind the plate and he ended up throwing a lot of balls. Live and learn. Put him in that position again. He’ll get it. Or he won’t. The more I watch baseball, the better I understand Yogi Berra.

ASU strategy was brilliant. Absolutely wore our batters out in the first two games. Yep, they shrewdly rope-a-doped us to get that Sunday W. We used up all of our runs on Fri and Sat. Damn them.

Between the 2 teams there were 24 Ks, 10 looking. When you see that many players from both teams walk away shaking their heads something is amiss. The zone was not as big as inconsistent.

One can’t ever dismiss those pitiful souls, dressed in “blue” who do so ONLY because they CRAVE the attention. It isn’t for love of the game, or a supplemental paycheck…. No…. It’s deeper (shallower) than that. They ARE the reason why the game is played. 😇

Today was unfortunate, but in every sport, you have to work with/around the guys calling the game. Gotta perform so that they aren’t the reason for your win or loss.

Nolan Earley…. Plate ump … was all over the place today…. Yep. Both ways. Bloomquist was as vocal as anyone. It wasn't one sided. OSU had opportunities to add to the 2nd inning run. It wasn't the "blue".

The Sunday Slump
Season to date all games
Runs/game 9.8 Hits/game 11.7
Last three Sundays Runs/game 3.7
Hits/game 7.3
Conventional wisdom suggests that when the team is short on arms, the bats are the best path to victory. This would be especially true when the team is highly ranked in national offensive stats and without a clear Sunday starter as a result of injury. But Sunday pitchers have had less run support than Friday and Saturday pitchers. Today, the top of the order had no luck at the plate and have been less than stellar in the other two contests.

And traditionally in collge baseball, Sunday's are high scoring affairs, because it is rare to have a Sunday Stud starter. Every top 25 team in baseball has a Friday night guy, most have a darn good Saturday night guy, but only a few have Sunday guys who are lights out, Sundays are a bit mix and match for everyone. So it is a real shame when your Sunday "guy" (well three guys, Lattery, Ferrer and Brown) throw LIGHTS OUT and give up zero runs, just to have the "closer" come in and **** the bed and the offense give very, very little run support. The one thing I will say about yesterday (don't know about the other two sundays), it was down right COLD, and in the ninth it started drizzling. So the conditions were pretty miserable, and both teams offenses seemed to never get warmed up either (ASU's ninth was more walk driven than hard hit driven). Weather shouldn;t be an excuse, especially when the other team is from a warm climate so should be even less adapted to it. We definitely left some oppurtunities on the base paths, but for the most part we just didn't even get on base much. Kudos to THEIR Sunday starter who pitched his heart out, good for him, and too bad for him that he wasn't rewarded with the win. Their Closer didn't seem to mind the pressure, or the lead off man aboard, just calmly struck out the next three guys... We need to find a guy with nerves!

I bet Early went home after that game and cracked a cold when thinking, what a day. Everybody has them, just not standing figuratively naked in front of all those people.
