AJ and Greta should be playing more and Tea and Emily less. Part of it two are freshmen and need the experience. The second part if highly sought recruits don't get playing time and then look at the newbies coming in well its transfer portal time. If you’re playing certain players because you’re afraid they’ll transfer, you shouldn’t be coaching.

Kennedy looks very good in the mid-range shots during warm-ups, so I think she is capable. Another thing I noted in warm-ups last night is the assistant coaches directing them through two new warm-up shooting drills… one where the player drives towards the basket and kicks it out to the perimeter for a shot and another where the coach set a screen for the player’s shot. That was the first time (in many years of watching) that I can remember the warm-up routine being changed. Regarding guard play, my only complaint with Tea is her shooting… otherwise, we do need her for her ball handling skills. I too was thinking that AJ and Greta should play more. Greta’s biggest problems have been finishing on drives and pull-ups and getting open for her three point shot; she really is a great shooter.. just needs to get the looks. AJ was very good last night. I watched Kennedy in warmups, and she put those shots up with less oomph on them - and much more effectively. Obviously, big difference when you have adrenaline flowing and someone trying to contest your shot. The natural inclination is to put just a little bit more on them. But those who can keep the game shots (maybe 20 to 25 a week) closer in tempo to their practice shots (several hundred per week?) are the more successful shooters.

Note to self: when someone takes the ball out of your hands, start defending that person instead of turning to the ref claiming you called a time out.

Was at game last night. 1. Rueck had OSU in zone early after man-to-man defense was ineffective. Our zone is pretty effective and long. Kept us in the game. I think we'll see a lot of zone rest of season. BTW, Emily Codding is an intelligent defender in the zone, even if she is a not much of a contributor on offense. 2. TvO was the story, and not just her offense. TvO played solid D all night. Rebounded too. 3. Our offensive sets got us open looks. We just bricked everything. Something I saw in warm-ups that I haven't seen before was a player drove to the rim, stopped, and turned and hit an open player. Looked great in warm-ups. I saw it happen in the game multiple times, and every shot was bricked. KB had so many open looks and couldn't convert. 4. Jelena needs to quit reaching, and bringing her hands down on a block attempt. She is a great rebounder, and we could have used her more tonight, but she got in foul trouble early. 5. Would like to see Taya go to the rim a lot more. Taya is quicker than a lot of post defenders. This season when she does decide to go to the rim, Taya converts or gets fouled. 6. I thought AJ was solid tonight. Great contribution for the minutes played. Greta on the other hand continues to hesitate when she gets an open look. Cannot hesitate in PAC-12 as defenders close space quickly. Coaches have to get Greta going. 7. I liked when we went into the press...it was effective again, like in 4Q at WSU. I think we'll see more of it vs UCLA TvO is the new Syd Wiese. And she is a freshman. Unbelievable player.

I agree with point #2 about TVO. She had a fabulous game. I would add that it has seemed to me that she is getting more confident in bringing the ball up the court and setting up the offense. She has been put in that spot at the end of a couple of recent games, including last night.
I'm not so sure that TVO isn't going to end up being the point guard everyone is hankering for for the next few years. She's not the lightning-quick player that many prefer, but as lotrader says, she is in the mold of Wiese. The Beavers didn't do too badly in the years with Wiese at the point.

Looking at the last play in slow motion (floor level shot from Pac-12 network highlights).
1. USC #13 gets Ellie on forearm as well as ball. Could have very easily been called a foul. 2. SC#13 is first to the rebound and has it for an instant, but she doesn't call for timeout until Kennedy is already in the process of dispossessing her. 3. Instead of defending Kennedy's shot, #13 turns to the ref and pleads her timeout case. 4. Kennedy converts for 2. Light, Horn. 5. OSU 63. USC 61.

Well, whatever it takes. The other thing I noticed about the final play is that Ellie quickly looks (as she pivots 360) for both Taya and Talia for an open 3pt (or long 2) with about 5.5 > 4.9 seconds left - maybe that was the design play? USC was looking for that as well, and defended it. Ellie was left in a tough situation with a shot-blocker in her grill and 4 seconds left. The scenario had double-overtime written all over it.

If there is one or two complaints about her game its the unforced errors/turnovers and sometimes she drives into like triple coverage to toss up a prayer.....sometimes she's bailed out with a foul. I'm betting she will improve on those areas. She really heated up and played with confidence, and killer instinct last night.
