Marotte is a player. 11 on 4-5 shooting at the half, 3-3 behind the arc. Agreed. A very efficient game for the frosh who came into the program with little fanfare. I really like what I have seen in videos about her work ethic. Appeared ready to compete from the first day of competition. A wise and veteran coach who watched a Beavers practice last month called her his surprise of that training session. I think he was on to something.

I think 4500 for a Friday night 8:00 game against a nondescript opponent is outstanding. 2019 opener against UC Irvine was on a Saturday at 6:00; drew 5,404. 2018 Cal Poly Friday at 7:00 4,468 2017 North Dakota Friday at 2:00 3,737 This season random Pac-12 attendance checks for best attended counting game or games (it will be interesting to see where the averages fall after 10 games):
Arizona State verses Colorado St. 7,343
Ucks verses Idaho St, 7,436
Stanford verses Morgan St, 2,696
Zona verses CSUN 6,154
UCLA verses Pepperdine 1363
USC verses Pepperdine 1147
Utah verses Lipscomb 1732
Wash. verses San Diego 1341
Wash St. N Arizona 934
And if the day matters or time (too late) weather ect, then we can't help that part of the fan base. Btw, Bvrbooster , thanks for the info on the past seasons

Will be interesting to see the "official" attendance for Utah today. I'm streaming it, I don't think there are even 100 fans in the building. It is completely empty. All the Utes fans must be at home watching the football team on TV.

Marotte, you will recall, originally committed to Washington. I think we're going to be very glad we fell into her ultimately signing with us - and not the Huskies.

Agreed. What is going to be very valuable is her ability to hit that pull-up jumper with good elevation. That brings a new element to our offense. She can get that shot over shorter guards just about any time she wants to. She seems to hit it with good efficiency.

Oh, I definitely recall. UW had a decent recruiting class (on paper) even w/out AJ. In their opener, 1 of them played about a minute, the rest never entered the game.

Interesting numbers, Sparty; thanks. I'm pretty surprised at that Arizona State number. They've only averaged about 3,000 the last 3 years, and they're not as good now as then. I wonder if it's correct? The PAC 12 website is not always very accurate - two years ago, they counted the 2 games in the high school gym in Maui as home games for us, and never corrected it. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they were wrong on this as well.

I looked it up. ESPN shows ASU attendance in their first game as 7,343, and just over 4,100 in the second. I was wrong, but I remain surprised.

I've suspected before that attendance numbers are not accurate. Utah listed today's game as 1631. There's no way. Even including all the players, coaching staff, band, cheerleaders, venue staff, there weren't even half of that number in the building. Like I said earlier, looked like about 100 people. Maybe they count tickets sold, and almost everybody that bought a ticket skipped the game. Just laughable though.

But 'fanfare' can be off-target. AJ was afterall a 4-time Texas Girls Coaches Association 6A All-State selection. 6A is the top rung in Texas HS Sports. At first glance (that's the caveat), Marotte has a level of confidence, instincts and physical ability that present nothing but very good basketball, for years to come.

Okay, I caught another completely bogus official attendance today. USF hosted Cal at the Golden State Warriors arena. If anything there were even less people there than Utah had. Box score shows 2057. Absolutely ludicrous. Probably not even 100. It's a double header, the men's team is playing the night cap. I'm guessing they are counting all the people who are gonna show up for the men's game and skipped the women's game. It's shameful that they are using made up numbers like this.

I trust coaches polls over national ranking. If you are an all state selection in Texas you are really good and to be selected all 4 years means you have some serious skills. The difference between the exhibition game and this game was significant. She looked a bit pensive in the first game and much more relaxed this game. I look forward to watching her develop in the coming years.

The way she drives into the paint, stops, rises on her little jumper, makes it look like she is dependable for double figures every game... If she hits 3s, that becomes closer to 20/game.
