Actually, this will decrease Texas's and Oklahoma's influence. Much harder time for them to reach the CFP out of the SEC than the s%#tty Big 12. I get your point, but my point stands.....this would make the SEC more dominant. I get that the SEC will cannibalize themselves even more, but record expectations will be adjusted accordingly......a couple loss SEC team (who lost to say Alabama and Texas) could get the nod over an undefeated team with an easy schedule.....something like that. And sometimes that’s appropriate. IMO of course. (I’m looking at you Boise St!)

I know it's impossible, but I'd like to see all Div. 1 teams thrown into a hopper every year, then you just draw ping pong balls to make 10 groups of 13. I can't even imagine what kind of buzz would be generated for a college football conference draft lottery every year. Everyone plays the other 12 teams in their group, the league winners and then 6 at large teams are selected for the 16 team playoff. Teams that don't make the final 16 can be invited to a "bowl" game (eliminate the winning record requirement so everyone gets a 13th game). I just made an excel sheet with all 130 teams and here's the 10 groups for my fictional 2021 football season: Group 1 | Group 2 | Group 3 | Group 4 | Group 5 | Group 6 | Group 7 | Group 8 | Group 9 | Group 10 | Pittsburgh | BC | Minnesota | Va Tech | Ark St | BYU | Cincinnati | Toledo | Ole Miss | Utah | Baylor
| Mizzou | TCU | ECU | La Tech | ODU | Iowa St | SJSU | Memphis | NMSU | Southern Miss | Ball St | Kansas St. | Auburn | Virginia | Utah St | Arizona | Utah | UAB | UConn | Nevada | Wyoming | WVU | Fresno St | Arizona St | Temple | Houston | UCLA | Georgia | UTSA | Iowa | Georgia St | Texas | Charlotte | Alabama | Liberty | Duke | Army | South Car | Stanford | Mississippi St | UNLV | Navy | Kent St | Wazzu | WKU | Boise St | Syracuse | Texas Tech | Ohio St | Marshall | LSU | Oklahoma | SDSU | SMU | App St | Notre Dame | Illinois | Kentucky | TAMU | Texas St | MTSU | Wisconsin | Coastal Car. | Kansas | Akron | ULM | Tulsa | Michgan St | Troy | Washington | Clemson | Miami (OH) | Florida St | Arkansas | Maryland | Wake Forest | Bowling Green | FIU | Nebraska | Hawaii | Michigan | Penn St | North Texas | Oklahoma St | Ohio | Northwestern | Buffalo | Vanderbilt | Tulane | USC | Florida | Ga Tech | California | UCF | Air Force | Rice | South Florida | Purdue | NC State | Rutgers | Lousiana | Eastern Mich | Central Mich | Oregon St | New Mexico | Colorado | South Ala. | West Mich | North Carolina | Northern Illinois | Ga Sou. | Miami (FL) | Louisville | FAU | Tennessee | Colorado St. | UMass | Indiana | Oregon |
Props to Tennessee for automatically winning Group 6. Tough draw for us with Alabama. Love that Miami(OH) and Miami(FL) get to play each other. Maybe we do these groups for two season so everyone plays the other home and home and then move on to a new cycle, though I think the annual ping pong ball selection show would be a ratings bonanza and likely we keep this on a one year deal.

Some other advantages - smaller schools are on more of a level playing field when it comes to recruiting. There's probably countless examples of 4 or 5 star recruits that loved a smaller college but knew they wouldn't get exposure or a shot at a championship if they didn't sign with a Power 5 school. If you end up in a group of death, like say Group 3 above which has 10 current P5 teams, there are six at large spots. No rule saying that those have to go to second place finishers in their group. Or, perhaps you have a selection committee select five of the at large spots, and the last spot goes to a fan vote - give the people what they want....think of the fan interest that could be generated by that as well.
Travel and logistics would be a nightmare in this scenario, and I know it'll never happen - but I think this plan could generate more fan interest in previously neglected parts of the country. Imagine the buzz in Fort Collins if Notre Dame were on the home schedule, or a school like UConn in a part of the country that isn't really a college football hotbed had home games against Ohio State and Oregon on the home schedule. That'd probably draw a few more New Englanders to football games and TV screens.

No Great Oregon Civil War? No Dog Fight? Hard pass. Take 13 groups of 10. The 13 champions plus three at large. Oregon State plays the nine in Group 12 plus Oregon, Washington and Washington State. 9/4 @ Western Michigan
9/11 South Alabama
9/18 Eastern Michigan
9/25 @ Louisiana10/2 Washington 10/9 @ Washington State 10/23 North Carolina 10/30 @ Central Michigan 11/6 @ Rutgers 11/13 Colorado 11/20 New Mexico 11/27 @ Oregon
And that is how you game Oregon State into a 16-team playoff. Beautiful trips to Kalamazoo, Lafayette, Mount Pleasant and Piscataway.
Some people will probably object to the directional Michigan teams being in one group, but those people are whiners. Bring it on!

Nope. We're blowing up the model. No more we're playing these guys because we've always played these guys. That's how consolidation of power happens.
I'll allow for it in the bowl game at the end of the year. Create an Oregon Bowl, it rotates stadiums every year and Oregon and UO have standing invites unless they're in the playoff.

That's how tradition happens. Besides, if rivals are evenly matched, there can be no consolidation of power. It only becomes an issue, if one team dominates the others in their geographical neighborhood.

You must’ve missed the part where I said in the first four words “I know it’s impossible,” but you know thanks for busting my bubble.

Two words, "promotion" and "relegation". Yep.
And I think the Super League, or whatever, needs to be superimposed on the existing conference structure. I've been working on a concept. Wanna hear it? Too late, here it is.
To get started, you take the top 16 teams at the end of season 0. Put them in 2 groups of 8 for season 1. Season 1, everybody plays the other 7 teams in their group once. Like a soccer group stage. Top 4 from each pod advance to the playoffs. Playoffs is just a normal 8 team playoff. Winner is the national champion.
Since you're only playing 7 games, plus playoffs, you can still schedule historic rivalries and you never actually leave your conference, so the non-football sports don't suffer. Of course, you'd have to reward those teams with money for making the Super League. Fair enough.
Back in normal conference play, you have the usual conference schedule and non conference schedule. Take the top 16 ranked non Super League teams at the end of the year, they play in 4 team playoffs, so you get 4 playoff pod winners. Literally any team in the country would start the season with a chance to compete for one of those playoff spots, no matter what conference they're in.
Those playoff winners face the bottom 4 from the Super League in one game, winner take all promotion/relegation games. Winners go to Super League for at least 1 season. Losers go back to their conference for at least 1 season.
If would create tons of interesting matchups and in any given year. If everything had held to form last year, that would be some really interesting matchups like Liberty vs Iowa, North Carolina vs Louisiana, Texas vs Coastal Carolina and Oklahoma State vs Florida to see who stays and who goes. I'd watch the s%#t out of those games, promotion/relegation games would be massive and it would keep interest high for more than just a handful of fan bases. Every year, every single team in the country would have a chance at competing for the 16 spots in next years Super League.
With some hard work, some luck maybe, you *could* get into the Super League and you won't see all the blue bloods, new bloods and big market teams abandoning historic matchups for money, killing the sport. There's no real reason to leave your conference. And at the end of the day, you get what you earn.
I doubt it happens, but I think something similar could work well.

One of those stories on that Trojanwire lists this an as option for USC:
No. 4: Go independent in football, staying in the Pac-12 for other sports.
JFC. There is no way the Pac-12 maintains any connection with the Trojans without football. To suggest otherwise is sheer stupidity of the highest order.
If USC (or UO, or Washington) thinks abandoning a century of regional academic and athletic relations for universities thousands of miles away makes sense, then good riddance. We know they are arrogant. I don't think they could possibly be that stupid.
