I should have worded it differently. Her shooting has been good but what I noticed was that she was more assertive, bordering aggressive, when she doesn't have the ball. Going for rebounds and defensively she made her presence known. In my opinion this was her best complete game.
For the first time in a few years, I was left with the idea that Taya may not start. If TvO were to start Ellie may become the starting 4.

We will need this type of play from her consistently moving forward. Again, if Ellie sticks around for another year, it will be interesting to see what happens at the 4 position. We will be extremely deep there.

Programs can always use a skilled 6'3" shooter who can pass effectively from the 3 or 4 position. Mack is someone that I really like to root for because she plays so selflessly, often to the detriment of her own offense. Hope to see her look for her own shot against UCLA and cause the Bruins defense to guard her out to the arc tomorrow.

I loved this move by Jelena. Looking forward to the day when she gets more comfortable, gets more minutes and her teammates get better at getting her the ball.

She will only get better with confidence! I’m wondering if the opposing team normally has their 3 or 4 guard Mack? I’ve never really paid attention to that specifically, but I think she would benefit from starting out at the 4 instead of the 3. This would force the opposing team’s 4, who is normally slower than their 3, to guard Mack all the way out to the 3 point line, further opening up the inside for Jones to do her thing. I’m also somewhat confident that Mack can hold her own defensively against most 4’s in the conference. Boards may be another issue..

I agree with you (kinda) in that the move she made showed smoothness and mobility for a Big. That's a plus. HOWEVER, you want a player who is 6'9 to play like she's 6'9. There was NO need for that move. A simple turn, elevate arms, and release would have been unstoppable and far more efficient. Right now Jelena pays like she is 6"3, not 6'9. To me, that is not a plus. It's a waste.
Coach needs to get her playing her height. When she does, then she truly will be a force. GO BEAVS!!

If we can control the tempo against UCLA then Jalena would be a great tool inside against the Bruins. Her size is so disruptive in and of itself. If they control the tempo will be hard to justify using Jalena. Hope we can put a fairly decent threat against UCLA WITH THEIR SPEED. If we compete and show a better showing tommarow we might get some tourney interest. We really need a win though. Refs are terrible at UCLA. They shoot well this year and the tall oriental girl has really improved

That’s what’s missing for her. I think she’ll continue to improve on that as she gets stronger and more comfortable.

The thing I have noticed about Jelena is that she makes crisp passes. She also has a nice midrange shot. Let's not forget that she will still be a freshman next year.
The freshman sophomore duo of her and Taylor are going to be a challenge to reckon with for opponents. Especially with the quality backcourt coming in this year and next.

Basically, you try to get two points in the way you are most likely to get two more doing the same thing. If your approach to the game is just to get two points, however you can, you're not gonna be in the game long. GO BEAVS!!

The defender was all over her back, if Jelena tried to turn and face her the most likely result would be a turnover or jump ball at best. So she went around the defender demonstrating good foot movement. A potential bonus is that the defender might not over play her as much next time giving her enough room to face up. If not I don't see why she couldn't go around her again, it's not like it was some amazing shot, it was a lay up.

I'm happy that she made the basket however she got lucky in that situation.....If USC had been playing any kind of help defense--as most teams do--the helper would have simply swatted the ball away when she did those 2 dribbles.....She violated post player fundamental #1 which is NEVER put the ball on the floor when you get the ball in close to the basket....You simply shoulder fake one way to get the defender off your back and leaning toward your fake and then quick turn the other way and pop in your little 2-3 footer before the defender recovers from your fake. Both of our post players need drilled on this simple post player fundamental move.....Marie perfected this move and added in the step-back also to make her shot unblockable by the time she was a Sr., so there is some hope that the coaching staff can get our young post players up to speed with their individual post-player moves in another year or so.
