Thanks thickhead! That was great to listen to.
Just a couple thoughts from what Coach Rueck said. He called Ellie a guard who plays a physical game. That really leads me to believe she is definitely slotted for the 3 spot this year. I know we had already thought that, but there were some questions whether she was a 3, or 4 for the Beavs. I think the answer is both.
Regarding Sasha, this quote "One of the best athletes that I've ever coached, if not the best". That says a lot, and he looks at her as a lock down defender.
He also speaks very highly of the talent and skills of Jelena. I was one of her doubters at first. I just wasn't sure about her ability to run the floor and play at the pace of the Pac-12. The talk from the coaches this summer/fall have given me a lot of hope for her future contributions. I can't wait to see her on the floor next month!

Rueck: "I said it to the team the other day after practice. The fact that we get to watch Jelena and Taylor every day in the post, I don't know how many teams in the country can say anything like that. The level of skill and ability in those 2 players, the way they compete, there's so much talent in those 2 that we're in good hands at the 5. And who knows, maybe we can slide one of them to the 4 and play them together. I am excited to experiment with that. ... [Jelena] doesn't lack skill that's for sure. ... The 2 of them are dynamic and formidable."

Jones says she is 6'3 1/2" to 6'4" tall. Wingspan is 6'10" and not 7'2" or 7'3" as previously believed, but still pretty wide never the less!

Just looking at Jones, you can see the long legs, long arms, and long fingers. And I agree with her on Whataburger.

At a practice where the Rebounders were invited, each player gave their height. As I recall, every single one was at least an inch less than their official height. Some were two inches off.

The best part about Taylor's wingspan is that, even as a brand new freshman, she kept it above her head when holding the ball/grabbing a rebound. Didn't lower the ball down to where those pesky smaller players could swat it away.

While Mack has size, her game is more outside than in historically. She played on the perimeter a lot at Bucknell. With our current roster, I see her playing more 2-3 than 3-4. Here's an example of what I mean:

What's really impressive in that clip is Ellie's passing. Good lobs that the Beav's have a reeeeaaally hard time with.

A very interesting detail regarding Ellie's senior stats at Bucknell: She had just 26 offensive rebounds but 196 defensive rebounds. So I guess they probably had her playing offensively as a guard but defensively as a center / forward.

In my opinion to strive in Coach Ruecks system as a 3 or a 4 you must be smart, shoot the 3 well, be an excellant passer and be a solid defender. From everything I have watched or read of Ellie she checks all these boxes. I think she is going to have a huge year!
Side Note: With Seniors getting an extra year does anybody have any insight on if Ellie, Aleah or Jovana? My guess is Aleah comes back but I wonder about the other 2.

I re-watched both the Tennessee and Baylor games from the NCAA regionals last night. Though we beat Tennessee, we really struggled with their defensive pressure due to relatively poor ball-handling abilities (and their athleticism). Baylor did not pressure us as well as Tennessee did, but in the next game, Louisville killed us with pressure even greater than Tennessee's. When I look at our team this year, I'm thinking that we will likely have the same susceptibility... but of course I hope I'm wrong. We have a lot of tall players but to take advantage of them, we need very good ball handling and/or great movement and passing. If Sasha and Savannah bring the ball handling skills, maybe we'll be better. In Jovanna and Ellie, we have height and great shooting from the perimeter, but ball handling is questionable... at least against smaller/quicker athletic players. We have shown many times that we can win despite a high number of turnovers, but just think how good we could be if we dealt with that issue.

Agree, although I think she defended taller players out of necessity - she was the tallest player on their roster that had significant minutes. I suspect she's able to defend most perimeter players, it just wasn't what Bucknell needed her to do.

I think people get fixated on turnovers by the Beav's and I think it's a mistake. OSU is consistently in the top 30 in the country in Turn Overs/Assists. Not that bad. It just seems bad because they don't go for the steals like the other team so it appears like the Beav's are turning it over all the time without the return. The Beav's version of defense is to pressure the other team into a bad shot and grab the rebound, top 5 in defensive rebounds year after year. SR does it differently but it works, honest.

Position defense explains why we don’t CREATE turnovers by the other team, but it doesn’t explain why we commit SO MANY turnovers when we play uber-athletic teams. Yes, we have strategies that sometimes allow us to beat those teams, but it is clear that our turnovers against such teams is a weakness that we need to work on if we want to improve our chances for a national championship.

I still think if you break down the turnovers a large percentage is from bad passes into the paint and less about being stripped of the ball by hounding short athletic guards.
