I'm curious about why you guys figure the predraft lists have Slocum and Pivec going in the first round? Are all of the evaluators of talent as blind, and dumb as the other Beav fans? Or could it be you guys are being a little harsh on the guards for not dominating against WNBA all-stars?
Slocum looked under control out there, Pivec looked harassed. Slocum was looking for someone to dish off to when she did her drives (freshmen bigs didn't have a clue), while Pivec was just concentrating on the drive and when a big started tracking her was left with trying to finish the drive when it was doomed. So yeah, Slocum looked better out there, but I think Pivec will get more out of this experience just because she learned what she needs to work on more, while Slocums job requires other players to do better for her to be better.

Granted the National team would make many college players look not so good. I thought the Oregon St. guards threw some bad passes that had no chance of getting through, got their pockets picked too often, and just generally struggled to find good shots. Bird and Taurasi are cagey veterans but not exactly the quickest players. Some of the subs for the U.S. were much quicker of course. On the occasions the OSU guards were able to beat their player off the dribble, that usually meant running into Fowles or Wilson and getting their shot swatted.
Slocum or Pivec might end up doing fine in the WNBA. This game didn't mean they can't possibly play at the next level, but I definitely didn't see that they clearly belong among those players.
For comparison, I thought Carrington and Williams from Stanford played better against the National team than the OSU guards did.

It's only a bad pass or a bad shot if there was some better alternative. I am positive that if you look at the film, in most of those situations where people here feel that one of our guards screwed up, you aren't going to see any superior alternative play. With their length and speed, Team USA was outstanding at cutting off the passing lanes and driving on them was extremely difficult.

Pivec should not be our PG that is clearly Destiny's job, she's just better. Our offence was too stagnant and against TUSA it was hyper exposed, pg holding/dribbling way too long and no off ball movement. Compared to Stanford who moved the ball quickly and had a lot of off ball screens and movement to get open looks. The worst thing out of this is we just got scouted. On D, our help D was average and we didn't adjust when they decided to take a bit of ground in the second half. But it was TUSA and reality is we only lost by 23, we had 3 injuries on the bench and they will add great depth when they return and our frosh showed us we have a good future ahead. As usual Gil did not disappoint and I loved Birds interview when she commented on our noise and fans. What a historical day for OSU.

Personally, I think most of us are nitpicking a bit. Two former starters couldn't play because of injury, and two freshman were getting their first taste of real competition. Going from playing 6 weak teams (Italy and exhibition) to playing the best team in the world is like going to bed in Hawaii and waking up in Antarctica. Did you see that team? Those ladies knew how to set pics, break through pics, block shots when the defender was beat, etc. The Beavs aren't going to be playing other teams that are that talented, or any team with that much experience. I came away from the game feeling pretty good about this Beaver team. If Taya and Kat get healthy, this team will be incredibly deep. The freshman showed me enough that the 'bigs' on this team will be much better than last season, and the guards are going to have another year of experience playing together. It's going to be a fun ride, so we can nitpick all we want, but this team will be a better team than the 2018-2019 version.
Hopefully....Our 'bigs' won't go O-fer any more at the free throw line.....Kennedy will shoot a little better than we've seen so far....Kat will return to shoot 3's better than ever...Taya will improve her 3's and her inside moves....no one will get injured......and the team and fans have fun. Let's enjoy this ride!

I can't quite believe I'm reading so much criticism of our players and our coaching staff. I don't recall this happening, but it would be like reading tons of criticism of the team for losing to Connecticut by such a wide margin the year the Beavers went to the Final Four. The Beaver women had a fabulous season and Connecticut was just better.
So it was last night. The USA team is simply the best team on the earth. There aren't very many teams at the top of the world; in fact, I think it's exactly one team. And we're dumping on our players for not being quick enough and smart enough and our coaches for apparently not understanding the game very well.
The year of the Final Four was a spectacular season for the Beavers. We all know the story of coming so far in such a few years, and with none of the recruiting advantages the powerhouse teams enjoy. It was simply amazing that year to get to a place where we could play Connecticut in the Final Four. I'm still feeling some of the glow.
And so it is this year. Think what it means for the Beavers to be on the list of teams the USA team schedules to play. What an achievement. I think Coach Rueck had it right--last night was not just a season highlight, but a program highlight that indicates just how far the Beavers have come. So we got beat by the best team on earth, threw some lame passes that had no chance, and got stuffed a few times by Aja Wilson. I can't wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds. Go Beavs.

The dialogue shouldn't be about what Pivec, Slocum, and Goodman didn't or couldn't do; it should be about the defense that didn't allow them to. Those ladies played great D, and, by the way, their O wasn't too shabby either. They are simply better and deeper than us at every position on the court, just as we knew all along they were. Our girls acquitted themselves well, and I suspect they're proud of their effort. They'll be even prouder when Team USA beats the gold medal game opponent by a larger margin than 23.
As for how Stanford's guards looked versus ours, I think that's somewhat meaningless. As I stated previously, my guess is that the USA coaches told the team to tighten up the defense this game, and they sure did. This is not really a "common opponent" like UCLA or Oregon, however, as Team USA is out of everybody's league, literally and figuratively. If they play Stanford 10 times, they beat Stanford 10 times; if they play OSU 10 times, they beat OSU 10 times. Some games the guards for either team will look pretty good, other games they'll look not so good. But they're gonna lose 10 times.
And, in any event, all three of them will be able to tell their grandchildren they scored in double figures against the best basketball team there was.
Finally, looking ahead - can you imagine how porous the UC Irvine defense is going to look to our girls on Saturday after that experience?

Coaches and Players have some great film now that will provide a great learning platform for quick improvement.

What did we learn from this game? I think we will trounce UC-I incidentally, and we have until the New Year until we encounter a team approaching this level of talent, but these are my current areas of concern. Go Beavers! Lololololol - "encounter a team approaching this level of talent" I'm sorry, but there are very few national teams, let alone any college teams, that come close to that level of talent. We may never (unless we get another game in the future against the next USA Olympic squad) come close to seeing a team that good in Gill against our squad. They are only heavily favored to win the 5th gold medal in a row for the USA.

I was trying to make the point that we have a few months until we see Stanford, a team that (from my reading of this board, not direct observation, mind you) played Team USA closer than we did. So we have time to improve on areas of weakness surfaced in this match up. But you are correct - "approaching this level of talent" was using 'approach' the same way those "asteroid approaches earth!" newspaper articles tend to do :-). Go Beavers!

Destiny looked to be our best player yesterday. A few times I would have preferred to see her pull-up instead of going into Fowles and Wilson, but she was fearless. She was looking for the bigs, but they were having a tough time establishing position - understandably so. We have a few more good posts on the schedule, Mompremier and Hebard, but neither is Wilson or Fowles.
