Well, fortunately there are no posts as good as Fowles, Wilson and Nneka playing in college currently. Those 3 have scored at will in the 2nd half. They were largely defended by two true frosh, who at least contested their shots, but those post moves were just polished and don’t get stopped much in the WNBA either. We still forced turnovers though at times. What I thought was pretty cool is that our guards could largely hang. Team USA guards were focused on going inside, so maybe they didn’t get to show their stuff as much, but I really felt that a casual observer would have thought our guards were in the same league.

Great experience for the team; coach Rueck played everyone, and wasn't as concerned about score as he was making sure people faced the best and played their game. Yes, driving inside on this squad was a forgone conclusion, but when they do the same against even the best college teams, it will feel a lot different. Mik and Destiny are a great back court, and we got a solid sense of what our kid centers are going to round into. I'm really looking forward to the official season.
There are many Olympic teams that are going to lose by more to this squad than the Beavs did.

Watching the game in person, you had to be really impressed with the USA defense off the ball. There was just never anybody, it seemed, open for an easy pass. They took away the lanes, and they were on our girls like their underwear. They just didn't let us get any offensive rhythm, and they forced a ton of turnovers. I suspect the coaches were on them to tighten up the defense after Stanford got 80 against them, and they sure did. Our coaches will have much to point out when the team reviews film of this game.
Brown and Jones looked good in the first half, particularly the first quarter; they looked like freshmen playing pros in the second half. That's OK that's what they are. Jones was 6 of 6 free throws in the other 2 exhibitions, and 0 for 5 tonight, when she looked like the second coming of Jo's junior year at the line. She has no pre-shot routine - I can't remember any decent free throw shooter who didn't have one.
Anyway, a 23 point loss to the best in the game is about as good as I thought we could do. Considering how short handed we are at the moment, we hung in there pretty good.
This team really misses Kat and Taya.

We definitely miss Kat and Taya.
We have two really good point guards, why is Mik playing point? In my opinion Aleah should be the primary point guard.

2nd half was a downer. I thought TUSA turned up their defensive pressure and inside scoring game big time in the second half and OSU had no answers. Beavs got double teamed and trapped a lot, leading to way too many turnovers and poor shooting. OSU needed to move the ball quicker and stand around less in the half court. They needed to attack the rim more, but did not have the quickness, moves, and ability to do so against the super athletic, super skilled gals of TUSA. The Beavs either got turned away or got their shots blocked. Oh well, they will never face that much talent and athleticism again. Good learning experience and reality check.
I was probably most disappointed in Mik's play on the offensive end, and the team's poor free throw shooting and abundant turnovers. Jones and Brown almost disappeared the entire 2nd half.
I was most pleased with the hustle and rebounding of the first half.
Oh, and so far this season I think Jones and Kennedy play best when they are both on the floor at the same time playing together. Unfortunately, until Taya comes back from her injury, the second string team of Washington and Morris is a big drop off. I was not thrilled with the player combinations in the second half. Not much of Jones and Kennedy together in the second half.

Maybe part of the staffs plan, however, way too sloppy on entry passes and also on setting screens and creating space. What happened to Taylor Jones shooting hand ?

Her shooting hand had a black wrap on it - did not notice it earlier in the game. She stayed in but it seemed to definitely affect her free throw shooting . Both her and Brown are going to develop nicely ( and quickly)

It was a fun game to watch. Glad I got to see the Olympic team first hand. I'm not sure it says anything about how the Beav's will play against other college teams. There are no teams with top posts who can block like these folks can, even when they were in college. So Mik and Destiny's meat and potato's of driving inside will work just fine against any of the teams they play against this year. Just not against the best team in the world.
Really would have liked to see Taya taking those 3 shots KB was missing. Might have been a closer game.
Maddie hung in there. I was impressed that Maddie kept them busy long enough for someone to come and help her on defense. I think she had more success inside than anyone else.
Mik got frustrated trying to drive and did not have a good game overall. Which is really good, because Mik does not like doing badly and I foresee other teams paying for this games frustration.
Aleah had a good game. Defense, offense, passing. Against a really good team she was really good. I remember her freshman year thinking "stop dribbling in front of yourself they are going to ste...sigh". She's just flat out a great player now.
Jan didn't get much playing time but I felt confident whenever she was in there. Played smart whenever she had the chance.
Destiny is going to have a great year.
Really wish Trish had more playing time in this game. She set good pick's, deflected a rebound for a teammate, was NOT being pushed around inside and forced some awesome players to score outside.
Jas was great whenever she got a chance. She's another Mik with having all parts of the game.
KB is a project. She has definite skills, but when she misses everything at the 3 but nails it one step in...how about taking the step in shot for now? This 0for stuff is going to be hard on the team. But yeah, she can play.
And wow. SR, put the team on FT practice.

Bottom line. When your opponent is more physically talented, skilled and experienced at every position, a 20+ point loss is to be expected.
But, a good early season reality check for our team.

Back from watching the game and I must have missed something?
Tell me how tonight's play extrapolates Destiny to belonging, fitting in well (whatever was said) in the WNBA and/or having a great season?
I do think she'll improve upon last season vs college guards, but as far as the WNBA? She was physically dominated by the big guards and not as quick as the quick guards and went 4-14, 5 assists, 4 tos. And she'll face that every game in that league.
Scary how good that USA team will be with all their healthy players back and after some more games together. The second college tour might be the one you don't want to be part of!
