There are two types of people in the world. 1. Those who can engage in critical thinking. 2. Those that change the meaning of plain English to make a point. Except that the article says someone asked about a predicted finish, not necessarily his predicted finish. Then goes on to say that the goal is to be better than that so there's no sense talking about it. It also says that Tinkle believes he has a roster that could do better than last years 4th place finish. So who's really cherry picking one part of the article to make a point?

Like it or not, he is the best coach at OSU in 30 years.
He is the 6th highest paid coach in the Pac-12. seems about right.
He is the 52nd highest paid coach in the nation. seems about right.
His extension is for one year. his raise is less than 5% year over year. His buy out is less than a million.
Lets all dial it down a notch, alright?

And we have more kids making academic all-conference than we ever have . . . more kids than Stanford. He runs a high-character program that fits the OSU culture and doesn't get into the news for the wrong reasons.

The players do the work and have the pride to succeed. The academic staff plays a large role, but coaches not! What culture? Curious... what other recent coaches had players consistently in the news? Or 9(?) transfers out? Give WT credit for 4th place, only one losing season, 1st tourney in 20+ years, etc... but, not the kids talent and work in the classroom. PS- a tiny bit tougher to get high GPA at Furd.

There must be another quote you are looking at. You are inserting "would" to support your take. TT should have followed with, "but I believe we will finish higher" in your version. There are two types of people in the world. 1. Those who can engage in critical thinking. Well...what's the second type of person?

I guess I should have read the rest of the article. When you make $2 million/yr you should know that there are lazy people like me that don't read every column inch. So you need to be on message all the time. A proper response should be, I don't care about the polls, we are going to finish in the top half of the conference. That way you don't have your message buried deep in an article - and your opposition can't clip a quote out of context. But, yeah, I should have kept reading.

Yes, the players are the ones that put in the work, but it helps to recruit kids that want to work... The overarching expectations a coach has for character matter, and promotes things like academic all conference and what not. and lets be real, Stanford offers underwater basket weaving to their athletes just like every other major college program in America. And having met dozens of my field contemporaries at conferences and meetings from not only Stanford but Yale and Harvard, honestly they are really just like anybody else. Some really really smart ones, some average ones, and some are as dumb as rocks.

Are you kidding me? The academic staff can't make a butt sit on the pine, but Wayne has done exactly that to players who aren't taking their academics seriously. And that sets the tone for the entire program. You can have the most awesome support staff in the country, but if the coach isn't preaching the same sermon, they can't be effective.
Bull. Just google "Stanford Grade Inflation". The old-school "gentleman C" is an "A-" in Palo Alto.

Without wasting time I'm betting 90% of our hoopsters couldn't even qualify to attend Furd. Let alone "recruitable" to play there. Lol... yeah, I'm sure if TT or anyone regular was bouncing around at a 2.00 they'd be benched or reprimanded. The continued reaching for BS to claim success for a coach who continually recruits in the bottom half of the conference, is 20 games under .500 in Pac12 play, and has shown no offensive scheme/consistency is amazing.

BS post. Trying to grab pieces of internet fodder to disparage another university to attempt to build up WT is laughable. 10th best Pac12 record in his 5 years... one game better than 34 win Cal. But, even Cal had 2 winning Pac12 records in that time frame. WT... with better recruits (believing the ranking stuff)... has 1. If you think OSU athletes don't get the benefit of the doubt in classwork, especially online courses you're in LaLa land. Hmmmm... wonder, Furd cheats on admission too? Hmmmm, similar degree, OSU vs Furd, which is more sought after. Again have your opinion, defend mediocre Wayne based on one GPII led tourney appearance and averaging 7 Pac12 wins. But, he doesn't deserve any credit for academics. As stated, you think TT sits pulling a 2.0? PS- in case you didn't know... All-Academic isn't a "team" designation. Team GPA isn't a factor, only players with a 3.00 and above and starters or significant contributors (50% of scheduled contests) as submitted by the AD/coaches. Hence, the "culture" has been turn in your best GPA kids. For the last 5 seasons it has mainly been (2) outstanding student athletes on 1st team throughout WT's tenure Big G (x2), Stevie(x3). Ethan made an appearance last season I believe, and Mueller (?) once... transfer in Kinesiology . TT has been HM and 2nd team, Drew HM. But, OSU has had All-Academic players on a regular basis, not just in WT's tenure. Academics has always been stressed and CR (the guy who had inferior recruits, but is only 4 games worse over his 1st 5 years... that guy) also sat kids with academic issues, nothing new. PPS- in case you want to look, Senior Pac12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in each of the 24 sponsored sports began in 2007. OSU has had (12)... MBB (1)/Stevie... WBB (2)/Ruth and Syd... baseball (2)/Jack and Max... Gym(2)... MGolf (2)... VB (1)... RowM (1), RowW (1) Furd... (80)... at least one winner in EVERY sponsored sport. Cheaters...

There is no question Stanford has a better academic reputation and is much more difficult to get into than Oregon State.
But if you think Tres, or Stevie, or Ethan couldn't succeed there, you are mistaken.
Thousands are denied admission to Stanford every year. Denial of admission does not mean those same students could not succeed there, if admitted.
And I don't have to wonder if Wayne would sit Tres if he pulled a 2.0. Because he didn't.
Coaches set the tone for their programs. Under Wayne, it's pretty apparent he puts a high value on attending class/graduating/staying out of trouble.
It's obvious we'll agree to disagree.

Not sure about ST and ET HS academics (but neither were recruited by Furd), but TT could not have gotten in to Furd, nor was recruited by them. Hence, using your logic they didn't so couldn't. And, denial of admission is the schools' opinion (among other federal factors that really do not affect athletes) that they would not be successful... it's why they have admission procedures in the first place! ALL coaches set the tone for their program... some stress different aspects more than others, so praising a coach for doing what he is supposed to seems to be reaching for something. Again... WT has zero to do with the actual academic successes. Those kids would have thrived academically under any regime, it's how they are built. The tone for academic success has varied some, but academic successes on the hoops squad has been fairly consistent throughout the last 20 years. And, the academic casualties the same.

The tone for academic success has varied some, but academic successes on the hoops squad has been fairly consistent throughout the last 20 years. And, the academic casualties the same. My cousin applied to Stanford out of HS. He was in various clubs, 4.0 student, never had a B in his life. Anyways, he was not admitted and he really wanted to go to Stanford. It is tough for even 4.0 students to get into. It is not like any high achieving student can't get in. I have heard from a colleague that went to both Stanford and OSU and she claimed that there isn't much of a difference between the two on the rigors of the academia. The admissions process is Very difficult. I know you are not the biggest Tinkle fan, but his W-L record is not the full story of his success here at OSU. He is setting a Culture of Success in the Classroom, and has been the most successful coach we have had since Ralph. No matter who is coach here, we are most likely going to be in the lower half of the so called recruting rankings based on location, prestige, etc. It is difficult to compete with the Arizona's, California schools and Seattle for 18 year olds. I went to Oregon State and loved it, but I can see why young athletes would prefer those locations. Also, that Tournament team that Tinkle led in 2016 was not just GPII. Tres was huge for us, Stevie, Drew did some solid stuff, and we had solid role players such as Malcolm, Drew, Olaf, Langston, Jarmal Reid, Derrick Bruce, etc. We were also a 7 seed and beat some good teams that year to get a good NCAA Resume (Tulsa, Utah, Oregon, Cal, Colorado, Washington, Iona, Nevada, USC) . That is quite impressive especially when the wheels fell off after Robinson left. I remember reading an article on how Tinkles first team was picked last in Pac 12 preseason rankings by the highest margin ever! That team managed to have a winning season! Beat a top 10 team (Arizona)! The next year he leads that same team to the 7th Seed in the Tourney! It was disappointing we lost to VCU, but we were without our 2nd best player Tres. Look, I am not exactly bragging about his overall record at OSU, and I was disappointed how last year finished after such a successful start in Pac 12 play. I am very confident that Wayne will build us into a consistent winner with numerous NCAA appearences in the future. I would gladly admit it if I am wrong, but I hope that we agree that we want what is best with the Men's program and we will both be happy when they make the tourney this year.

But once you are there, the professors think you are the creme de la creme. You have to do the work but the A's flow. As a consulting civil engineer, I've worked with more than a handful of Stanford graduates through the years. They are generally no better than OSU, Cal Poly, or Arizona State grads. Regarding Tres T, I have no idea of his high school marks, SAT score and so on. If he was not recruited, I'd guess the Stanford staff thought his game was suited more for Colorado State, UC Davis etc.
