Both of our current recruiting threads are getting long and bulky.... So, I'm hoping we can start a string of fresh ideas and new information here....
Basically, I think we are down to 2 heavy duty recruits that we are still aggressively pursuing. Since the two we are after (Van Lith & Daniels) have said virtually nothing recruiting wise, I have no clue whatsoever what our chances are for signing one or both of them....
I read somewhere on this board that the coaching staff will re-start personal contact with recruits on Sept. 1 - if that's true, we probably will be getting snippets here and there in the next week.....
It's always possible Coach is interested in players most of us don't know about - if so, that would be an interesting turn of events..And might signal that one or both of our top recruits are looking elsewhere.
Injuries are currently a roster issue for the Beavs with 3 key players in the "who knows what's going on" category - Jelena Mitrovic, Kat Tudor, and AA. I'm guessing it will be November before anything definitive is decided in their regard.....One interesting possibility is that if Kat Tudor is denied an eligibility extension (I don't know when that decision is made) she could possibly redshirt this season to ready herself for a complete 20-21 season. That is pure speculation on my part, so maybe someone knowledgeable can speak to it more clearly.
A further complication that affects recruiting is the rising stock of Jas Simmons who is making impressive strides toward achieving a Pac-12 calibre game. If Coach believes she is a prime candidate for a starting position in 2020, that reduces the urgency for signing a guard in the 2020 recruiting class - especially with the high level players who can play guard in the 2021 class who are interested in the Beavs.... At any rate, these are just a few starting points to think about for those of us who love the recruiting business.... GO BEAVS !!

Definitely need guards in 2020 class. Pivec is a senior, Goodman and Slocum are juniors. Only sophomore guard is Simmons, and no freshmen are guards. I suppose Goforth could play a guard position, but she and Simmons would be the only possible guards coming back in 2021, so you'd have to play freshmen extensively, especially at the point. I definitely see urgency in in getting at least 1 guard in 2020.
I am, for the moment, completely discounting the new walk on, whose name escapes me.

411500, here's a link to wbb recruiting rules. recruitlook.com/recruiting-calendar/ncaa-division-i-recruiting-rules/womens-basketball/I don't remember the exact tweet, but the other day Coack Katie tweeted about being able to talk to some great young ladies beginning Sunday. That's because September 1st is the first day Coaches can begin calling High School Juniors. My guess is that Payton Verhulst will get the first call. Her friends Greta and Jersey (among others) will probably get calls tomorrow as well. If not already set up, I would be expecting some offical visits from some seniors in the coming weeks as well. I'll be surprised if Daniels or Van Lith don't visit. I think there may be an international girl or two visit as well, and Savannah Samuels from Georgia is sill a bit of a mystery. She really likes the Beavs, but I have no idea if the Beavs will offer her. There are a couple other really talented 2020's that could slip into the mix, but the Beavs may be expending their efforts on 2021, as they already have great inroads with Verhulst, Wolfenbarger, and Kampschroeder (again, among others). I might add there has been a lot of recent additions of 2021 playes on the twitter accounts of the coaches. I have a feeling that there will be a lot of reaching out to these girls on Sunday.

FWIW... I noted that David Verhulst (I assume this is Payton's father) was one of the people watching the live FB broadcast of our game in Como. I would say that is a pretty good sign that we are getting very strong consideration from Payton.

That's a good catch beavsteve. I hadn't noticed that, but the Browns (Kennedy's family) are definitely talking up the Beavs to David Verhulst, and that helps a lot. Payton is good enough to have her choice of where to go to school, but the Beavs are just about in as good of position as you can be at this point. I would absolutely love to see an early commit from Payton, as that would really set up a good recuiting year for 2021. Wishful thinking from me....

I get the impression some of you are thinking we'll ease off 2020 recruits in order to go all in on 2021. That wouldn't make any sense to me. We have 4 seniors and 3 juniors on this year's team. Since Scott always keeps numbers down, we have to replace those 4 seniors, or face a serious depth problem. Plus, as I posted elsewhere, we will have a definite numbers problem at both guard positions in 2021 if we don't bring some in next year. Simmons is the one and only underclassman playing guard that we currently have on scholarship.
With Goodman and Slocum as juniors this year, we had the luxury of just bringing in bigs this year. Can't do that again next year; can't wait until 2021 to sign guards.

We’ll have 3-4 pure guards on next years roster - Goodman, Simmons, and Goforth, and hopefully Destiny. Van Lith appears to be the top choice as a combo-guard, and Samuel who appears to be more of a wing.
We don’t need to replace all 4, because in a sense we did some of that a year early, adding three bigs when we lost one in Grymek. Of course Daniels is still a possibility, but if she is searching for a top academic school as her list showed, it won’t be OSU. A two-player class of just Van Lith and Goforth would be fine as far as I’m concerned.

I'm totally on the same page as beaverwbb fan on this one.... But it shows how elite Beaver basketball recruiting has become in the past few years...These two players, if signed, would be the two highest rated recruits in program history! Getting both would be a stunningly impressive achievement....And we're half way there already !! GO BEAVS !!

Next year's roster is not the numerical problem, guardwise. If you consider Goforth a guard, the 2021 roster would have but two, her and Simmons (who will be a senior then), and neither one a point guard.
Really critical that we bolster those numbers in 2020.

Don't want to disagree with your comments about our need for guards....Like Bigs, you must have quality guards to beat quality opponents...
Here's one thing to think about, however. What kind of guard is Rueck looking for? Distributor/outside shooter (Goodman, Katie Mac, Tudor) or a Slasher/shooter (Slocum, HVL)?
In two years coach will have to figure out how to maximize the considerable talents of Kennedy Brown, Taylor Jones, Jelena Mitrovic, and Trish Morris. To showcase that much Big talent you must have at least one guard who is a full time distributor and part time shooter....Now, since this is speculation season, how about this. In to the starting lineup steps a kid who has been in the program for 3 years who has all the trappings of a gritty guard who can distribute: Noelle Mannen the mystery walk-on. She was not signed for nothing. Could she be part of the puzzle - not for this year - but for the 2021 season?
On first glance this seems unlikely. But on 2nd glance it looks better because, when you get right down to it, it's going to be the performance of the 4 Bigs who will determine success in the 2021 season...For Bigs to succeed you must have a guard who gets the ball to them on a regular basis...If you have a guard who can do that she may never need to take a shot!
These 4 Bigs currently on our roster will likely be the best 4 Bigs on one team in the country in 2 years. Easily the best. Coach cannot waste them. He must have a distributor guard. GO BEAVS !!

I of course agree with the need for guards, but I’ve also seen a need to get an ultra-athletic, strong, quick, tall forward who can go to the hoop... kind of like Rickea Jackson, who we lost out on. It will be especially important next year when we’ve lost Pivec.

It will be especially important next year when we’ve lost Pivec. I love Rickea Jackson's game...would have loved to land her. From what I've seen, Goforth (who can play some small forward) gets to the rim (and free throw line) extremely well -- she does a terrific job of using her length and athleticism to get past defenders. She is pretty quick for 6-0. Dalayah Daniels is very athletic, though maybe more post-oriented, and from what I've seen, she can get to the hoop and score, so perhaps she could play some 3 for us.

Occasionally you see walk ons develop into significant contributors, but usually there is a reason why they were walk ons. Washington has had to rely on way too many of these type of players the last couple years. Too much of their roster is just not Pac 12 level players. Maybe Mannen is the exception, but I wouldn't count on her being a diamond in the rough who is going to take everybody by surprise in 2 or 3 years.
Also if you have a guard who never takes a shot, you have a defense that sags into the key and makes it difficult to make passes to all of those post players. Guards have to have some ability to score to make defenses respect them.
I agree that OSU needs guards, and bringing in more for the '20 class is better than waiting and going all in on '21.

Totally agree with the timing, because we should lock in early on the best possible recruits we can sign. Of course, I am not sure that any of us knows Scott and the Staffs strategy or their preferences, or, in fact - our position with any of the most coveted athletes. My concern is that, yes - we have recruited size and more athletic size - but, will AA, Jelena, or Trish - or any of the other bigs, actually hit the floor this year or next ? So, we are not really ‘set’ on this year , or next- for either bigs, or guards. Should be set with forwards. Another injury, or any fallout that we do not anticipate, and the whole team structure that is currently envisioned seems to go into ‘iffy’ land.

Guards are more important than bigs imo. The defense is started out front with the guards,as is the offense. If you have great bigs, and the perimeter players can't get them the ball in the right spots, they become less effective.
