With respect to number of players on scholarship, there are 3 juniors (Slocum, Corosdale, Goodman) on this year's team, 2 sophomores (Morris, Simmons), and 4 freshmen (Aquino, Mitrovic, Brown, Jones). That's a total of 9 returning in 2021. If we bring in 4 (Goforth, Samuel, VanLith, Daniels), that puts us at 13, same as this year. That leaves room for Tudor, and a grad transfer. If both those things occur, we'd have 5 leaving the program after 2020, and 10 returning - plenty of wiggle room.
Agree with keeping roster lower allows more playing time, but, if a recruit knows coming in (as I'm assuming Samuel would) that this is the chance you take, then I don't see that as an issue. If you decide you want more playing time, you ultimately transfer. Isn't that what Kalmer did? Might wind up happening with Morris as well, whereas Thropay opted to hang in for all 4 years. When a program regularly recruits 4 and 5 star players, and you're a 3, everybody, including you, is aware that minutes could be a bit of a rarity for you.

SR doesn't like to have more than 13...

That, historically, would seem to be correct. Now, however, of the 13 he has, 3 were unavailable to play in Italy, and who knows about their status in November? He also has to remember vividly that Janessa was out for some time last year as well. Depth is a bit of an issue, particularly since 4 of the 13 have never played a minute of Division 1 basketball.
I have nothing to base this on other than my own conjecture, but, if I were Scott, I'd definitely think I need to bring in at least 4 freshmen next year, and look for a transfer as well. Another possible thought is someone from the JC ranks, with 2 years of eligibility. Have no idea, however, if there's anybody there worth pursuing.

If there is good news following Savannah Samuel's official visit in Corvallis this weekend, look for it here on her Twitter site: twitter.com/savannahssss24I learned yesterday that Samuel won the Georgia HS state track & field title in the high jump (5'4") and is also a quality triple jumper and 400m runner. Would be interesting seeing her paired with Sasha Goforth for defensive purposes. Both have a reputation for being strong defensive players on the AAU circuit.

Thanks for the info on SS - she sounds like quite the athlete....It seems like her track prowess should translate well to basketball...Great leg strength required in both high jump and triple jump, and speed and endurance required of 400 meters.... Now if she can play basketball she sounds like a pretty impressive prospect.😇
Can we assume that if she is on an OV that she also has been offered? Or does the OV come first, then the offer? I must admit that my eyes are still trained on HVL & DD, so I'm ambivalent, thus far, about SS....
It will be interesting to see how SS & the Beavs play out.... While were in recruit mode here, has anyone heard news (rumours) concerning the Beavs hosting any OVs other than HVL & DD?? GO BEAVS !!

It will be curious to see how the recruitment of Savannah plays out. Savannah has been a big fan of the Beavs since July (possibly earlier). This weekend she retweeted the Champ Flemmings TD, and a few weeks ago she retweeted Kat's Happy Birthday to Coach Rueck. Savannah's Mom just started following all the Beavers coaches, as well as BeaverWBB, Beaver football, Beaver Baseball, OSU Hoops Journey, even Steve Gress and more, a total of 12 Beaver related people/sites. I would say that is pretty serious interest from the Samuel family. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to hear of a commitment from Savannah in the very near future, if it didn't happen on this trip.
Savannah is a great 3pt shooter and as noted, is very athletic. Beaverwbb, shared a little bit about St Francis (Savannah's High School) in Georgia in the other thread on 2020 recruits. St Francis is a small school, but a basketball powerhouse, much in the same vein as Hamilton Heights in Chattanooga. Both these schools have small enrollments but are two of the best basketball programs in the country.
I don't want to take anything away from her athletic ability because her track numbers speak for how good she is, but it should be noted that her 5'4" high jump was not the best in the state, but it was the best at her school's level, which is in the small school category in Georgia. Just thought I should clarify the level at which she won the state championship, while also stating that she is obviously a great athlete. Her jumping ability should be a major asset on the basketball court.

I quoted the excerpt from his post above because I thought it is important to note that an individual track & field state title is a significant accomplishment for any athlete, regardless of whether it was or was not the top mark (time or distance) in his/her state regardless of classification. I believe that Samuel transferred earlier in her high school career from a bigger public school to her current private school. A 5'4" high jump for a female high school athlete in my state often wins a state title in a number of classifications. High jumps of 5'6" and above normally start identifying a high school female athlete that she may be able to compete successfully in that event at a collegiate level. Monique Billings, one of the better female PAC-12 basketball athletes over the past decade, had a high school PR in the high jump of 5'6". I don't remember Billings losing many center jumps during her UCLA career.

beaverhoopsfan - -thanks for providing the board with rich and interesting information...It's obvious that you invest considerable time and energy in your research - no matter what the topic. (And so does rmancarl.) Personally, I appreciate the solid information you provide. I find it helpful in keeping the board on topic and on task - so to speak...
At any rate, we've all learned a good deal about Savannah Samuel because of your efforts, and those of rmancarl....🏀 Now let's see if she and the Beavs connect.... GO BEAVS !!

Yes, beavershoopfan, thanks for all the solid information you provide! Savannah is a great athlete who I believe could thrive in an Oregon State environment.
I'm not sure how much we can go by social media, but it looks to me that the competition for Savannah comes mainly from West Virginia, which has been a solid WBB program itself, finishing in the top 35 on ESPN's final rankings 7 of the last 10 seasons. Certainly West Virginia is a lot closer to Georgia, and Savannah does have 3 siblings, so you never know how much that could play into her decision, if the Beavs have even offered, which I'm presuming they have.

It'll be interesting Savannah's timeline down the stretch. Having already taken official visits to Alabama and West Virginia, and of course OSU this past weekend, it'll be interesting to see who gets her final two visits, or if she announces sooner.
