I like the trees. This is Oregon, is it not? That part of campus is already a concrete jungle. I think a few trees is a good design element, and healthy in general.
There are plenty of landscape trees that don't have roots that heave up through concrete and asphalt, or create a ton of litter.
The trees in the illustration look small, and could be an ornamental Alder, or an Eastern Redbud. The type of landscape trees that stay small, and would never generate the kind of leaf issues you see around campus with the large, native deciduous trees. Save the Trees Couldn't agree more. Having a tree nursery myself, as a general rule of thumb, the canopy of a tree approximates the root structure below grade. There are a number of root barriers that can be installed in tree coffins (affectionate name for some of these concrete lined beds) that restrict roots and guard against concrete heave. In a state that is a pioneer of the nursery industry, if academia and the LA involve local experts, heaving and debris can be minimized. Also, it is often a state/ federal mandate that a certain percentage of the construction cost be allocated for trees/ shrubs/ grass, etc.
Since this is an artists rendering, I find it amusing they illustrate the tree in fall color, with everything else in the picture in spring/ summer color. LOL. Structure of tree, color, etc. looks like a maple cultivar.
Haha, yeah I noticed that too. I just assumed they must be a Crimson Sentry Maple or something with red leaves. Which, wouldn't be a bad choice. Wishful thinking though probably, as I think you're right. They illustrated the new trees in fall color while all the established trees are in full summer growth cycle. Doh! Hey, at least the facade looks good. Agreed also, there are plenty of ways around root heave.

They should put in peach, plum or cherry trees.

The most important item outside of gill that is needed is a damn sign informing everybody what is taking place over the next week or so. Absolutely dumb there hasn't been one for seemingly decades. Just curious are the benches going to be made out of wood so they can fall apart like the ones in front of reser? Agreed. A simple coming events marquee would be fitting and in keeping with Gill's history. It would not be fitting according to the historic district that Gill lies in. They have tried to put up a new sign/marquee for years, but is not being allowed due to the historic district. An electronic marquee was not deemed part of the original structure. So.....don't get your hopes up.

Hey, at least the facade looks good. Agreed also, there are plenty of ways around root heave. The cultivar choices that are columnar are endless. In fact, in recent years, after years of specifying and installing columnar street trees around the country, the pendulum is starting to swing back to a more rounded shape - "canopy envy", as it were - LOL Hell, probably not the look we want to aim for, but Italian Cypress would be clean (debris wise), and would not heave the concrete. But, not exactly something that screams "Oregon" either. You see a lot of them in Cali. Having a cultivar that is bright Orange for fall would be a good choice
Serviceberry, Oak, Carpinus, Zelkova - lots of great choices today.

Thousands of students ride bikes to school every day. They need bike racks. Not sure why this is even an issue.

A Gill Skate Park right in front, if done correctly, could be something they show on every TV broadcast, instantly make Gill look much hipper than it deserves, erase the curse of the fuddy-duddies and even give a recruiting boost. X games made skateboarding an official sport by the way, is a sports fashion trendsetter and the sports marketing industry (you know who) taps into that vein every chance they get.

By law they must plant trees and put up architecture as part of their project budget. You will note all the new trees that were planted around Reser since the upgrades.

If skateboarding is hipper than bicycles, OSU should focus on something hipper than skateboarding. Perhaps a jetpack park?

Perhaps a jetpack park? even a jetpack park, as goofy as that sounds and undoubtedly would be, beats the hot deciduous tree action. Every singe commercial break for a televised sporting event let's show the audience that the epicenter of Oregon State sports is experiencing root upheaval.

Just put a reader board or marquee in Parker Plaza. It would be perfect right across the street from Gill for upcoming events at all the buildings in the area. Lasells, the alumni center, and of course Reser and Gill.

So far we have,
Take down the yuuuge trees that make a mess and ruin everything around them. Re-landscape with as many new, ornamental trees as can possibly be squeezed in there, while adding a state of the art skate park/jet pack launching pad and a grand marquee that also doubles as a bike rack for no less than 100 bikes.
Did I miss anything? Electric car charging station? I've always thought a zoo-style, live Beaver exhibit would make for some great opening video opportunities during games. Udub is always showing shots of their stupid dog on the sidelines. Colorado runs out a dang Buffulo! How great would the Civil War be with some live action shots of actual Beavers? Is that too much to ask?
