Watching Baylor tonight, I must say I get very excited about the future of our program. After the game, Baylor HC Kim Mulkey stressed the importance of a traditional post player, referring to her 6’7” star Kalani Brown. This seems to be an era where the big, true centers are disappearing only to be replaced by smaller, much more athletic centers. In tonight’s national championship game, Baylor proved a true center is still one of the most valuable pieces of the game, especially when other teams are countering with smaller, but more athletic players.
In the past of OSU WBB, we haven’t really had two bigs before. Deven Hunter and Taya Corosdale, while both 6’3” aren’t big pist presences like our future 4 players, Taylor Jones, Kennedy Brown, and Andrea Aquino will likely be more of post presences, while Patricia and Jelena will likely remain true 5’s. Baylor proves that if you get the two bigs to develop a chemistry, it is nearly unstoppable. Both bigs pass extremely well, and that is something I have seen in Mitrovic, Brown, and Aquino specifically.
Can’t wait to see how Scott utilizes all these bigs in the future! Go Beavs!

Deven and Taya never played together. Would have liked to see it however.

Deven and Taya never played together. Would have liked to see it however. Did I say they did? I was saying the while both are 6’3”, neither provided a post presence on the floor while playing the 4 in the sense that Jones and Brown will.

During Ruth's senior year CR would use Marie at the 4. It was usually successful and not used as much as I would have liked to see, I think they needed her as the back up 5 more.

I have no doubt CR plans on using 2 bigs at the same time next season, especially if Brown and Jones arrive more college game ready than Morris and Aquino did, and both Morris and Aquino improve during the off season. Mitrovic is an X factor...
Baylor even used a third big in the lineup for brief periods. Maybe that is a possibility for OSU in the 2020-2021 season if one or more of these gals has enough quickness/athleticism/defensive skills/outside shooting ability to play the 3.

I also really like Baylor's outside-in game - they would swing the ball around the perimeter quickly, and the big would either time flashing open on the side the ball ended up swinging to for a quick dump down going towards the basket, or the perimeter player would take a step or two inside the arc and step into a jumper. More "throwing the big open" than the traditional "pin your man on your back" sort of play, though they had the latter in their repertoire as well. I thought the guards ability to drive a few steps closer to the hoop and take a quick jumper was just as important as the skillful big in the paint. Then they had the over-the-top big to big passing.....
I could see us running a variation of this theme, but with the jumper coming from the arc from out stable of three ballers. I suspect we will see it, if our bigs come ready to play (and one would expect a McD AA to come ready to play, AA has had a year to get ready to play, Trish has had a year in the system). Our early play in the Fall will hopefully get some top-shelf guards ready to join the party as well.....
Go Beavers!

The thing that we will have (traditionally and hopefully) to go along with these bigs is deadly outside shooting. It was part of what made Marie such a deadly post last year - she was surrounded by three point snipers. You couldn’t double her and you couldn’t play zone unless you wanted a three point barrage. Baylor didn’t have to shooters and it was still very effective.
If we were every to utilize a three bigs lineup, Taya or Kennedy would likely play the 3, Andrea or Taylor at the 4, and Patricia or Jelena at the 5. It can be very hard to score on if they can effectively learn to defend together.
I agree Mitrovic is the X-factor. I’ve been very impressed in some of her film I’ve seen. She displays an ability to catch the ball, pass out of a double, and rebound the ball very well. If we can get her up to speed with the speed of the game in the Pac-12, I think she will be impactful.

I too like what the future holds, but let's temper our expectations; Brown is a senior, and Cox is a junior. 1 year earlier, a crafty senior in Marie really neutralized them.
I don't expect big things of our bigs next year. I am hopeful for a big jump from Patricia next year, but not really the others. Maybe I'm jaded from thinking Simmons could make the leap quickly, and obviously that didn't happen. I believe it's even tougher for a 5 to make that leap primarily due to needing to adjust to the physicality of the game, which is a huge leap from HS as well as what Mitrovic has been going against. Aquino did not even get much time in practice adapting to that physicality this year. So next year I'm expecting to see a lot of minutes with Maddie, Janessa and Patricia in the middle, while the others hit the learning curve.
I am very hopeful we'll see a Baylor-esque opportunity of dominate bigs playing together, but it's probably a 2-3 years away.

It no doubt won't be a finished product next season. The chemistry between the players will take time to develop and the youngsters will all have to adjust. You just never know who will be ready and who will take time to adjust. NC State's freshman post Elissa Cunane was excellent this season, and despite being ranked in the 50s, was much better than other top-10 posts.

The OSU coaching staff realizes that the 2019-2020 season can be one for the ages. Mikayla and Kat move on after next season. The OSU coaching staff has to bring along our post play quickly, and I believe they will. One of these candidates for the "5" will emerge. Or, we may play with two 4's instead of a "4" and "5". One way another, OSU coaching staff will have a post/forward rotation defined reasonably early (by PAC12 play). Maddie & Taya are certain to be part of the rotation. We need post defense, post rebounding, post passing, followed by post scoring (in this order of priority). We'll have some "real" candidates next season beyond Taya & Maddie. Watching Kennedy Brown in the McDonald's AA game, it was easy to see that she has great hands, great vision (able passer). In the limited time KB saw the court, KB demonstrated that she is a shot blocker as well. KB will see minutes. I don't know about AA, and what practice time she saw with the team last season, but it is clear AA has major upside. And while Trish Morris had limited minutes, she will also get minutes next year. PM can catch the ball, defend, rebound, and score close in. Rueck and coaching staff will have a rotation defined early.

I also wanted to see that a lot. Both were just incredible. I would love to see a battle of that team vs Baylor's national title team. Ruth and Marie vs Lauren and Kelani.

The OSU coaching staff realizes that the 2019-2020 season can be one for the ages. Mikayla and Kat move on after next season. Don't be shocked if we get the opportunity to see Kat Tudor play an extra (5th) season in Corvallis. While she played longer than the standard guidelines (30% or less of the team's games) for being able to obtain a medical hardship redshirt following injury for a season, I would love to see OSU petition the NCAA in an attempt to gain a 5th year for Kat in order to allow her to compete during the '20-'21 season. Kat played in 13 (out of 34) or 38% of the Beavs' games this past season. Considering that she was injured prior to halftime in her 13th game, she was physically able to play in 12.5 (or 36.8%) of her team's games this season. Tudor came into the '18-'19 recovering from a hand injury that required surgery during the late summer. She missed practice time in October 2018 and may have been limited by her recovery into early November. Based upon other medical hardship redshirt seasons that have been historically granted by the NCAA, I believe that Tudor has a better than 50% chance to play as a redshirt senior in '20-'21. I would like to see that..... as would plenty of her fans on this message board. And... I think there is a chance of that happening. Medical Hardship Requirements
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria: The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school. The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury. The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season. The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater. All of these must be proven with documentation. That means medical documentation to prove the injury and that it was season-ending and participation information to show that the student-athlete did not play in too many contests. This documentation is normally pulled together by the compliance office and training room. Some conferences require the athlete to submit a statement or letter as part of the request.

I have wondered the same thing. Ncaa has been granting waivers for several players for similar situations.

The NCAA does strange things. Would be awesome to have the sniper for a fifth year, and I agree it seems like a tossup. Especially given that as of now, the only guards on the roster will be Simmons, Slocum, and Goodman, and hopefully Goforth and Clark/Van Lith.
