I've gotten some pretty good mileage last night/this morning out of sending my duck friends bad intel text messages: "heard Mullens is in Boston to talk to BELICHICK! WOW, HOW EXCITING!!" "Some big time boosters were spotted in Eugene at dinner last night with Paul Wulff. He's a NW guy you know.. makes perfect sense..." "Multiple media outlets are now reporting it's Hoke's job to lose. Continuity IS important!" (this one gets an F-U response coming back my way) "Breaking - Dan Hawkins backs out of UC Davis job at last minute. Stay tuned!" We need to start spamming these on social media

I am not sure about the lackey assessment - whatever you can say about the Chipster, he didn't appear to be anyone's lackey. He came in and did what he was supposed to do, then left when he got his shot at the NFL, even if the "powers that be" offered him more money. As long as you win, you get left to do what you are doing. Once you start losing after having some success, then everyone is breathing down your neck - OSU has its big money boosters too who throw their weight around, tho perhaps without the shear force of the uck's leading money man. We should not characterize Chip's leaving hole as "when he got his shot at the NFL". The *ucks dragged out the "pay for recruits" saga for so long, and finally pushed responsibility off on chip when he got an NFL job he wanted. Remember, chip got handed a two-year "show cause" penalty. It's VERY likely he would have been unable to coach the *ucks in 2013 or 2014. (not to say that hole's "cleaner" would have suggested different penalties if chip didn't have other options). Still, I just want to point out that chip didn't necessarily leave hole all on his own accord. He was a sacrifice to the NCAA for their major violations.
"The *ucks dragged out the "pay for recruits" saga for so long"
Actually it was the NCAA that dragged out the saga for so long. Oregon wanted it done a year earlier to mitigate effects on recruiting (the "you don't want to go to a school that can't go to a bowl game" selling done when NOTHING was known about actual sanctions).
In addition, Kelly was blamed for what he was responsible for ... and he accepted that blame. He apologized to the school, fans and coaches for what he had done to put the program at risk.

the fighting redactors were a little too good at their own game. Their lawyers won the battle and lost the war. The war is always about applying speed and brawn to pad level toughness. Gary knows.

The way the whole thing was handled was bush league. When a University has to go CHANGE it's official press release on the firing, there's something dreadfully wrong. They roasted MH and raked him over the coals! What coach isn't going to look at that and have it at least raise some red flags? Also, one line in Canzero's column said it all to me when talking about PJ Fleck. Paraphrasing here, but one insider told him If PJ could just get in front of Phil he'd get hired. To me, that's all you need to know.
On another note, the Helfrich's are moving in to their newly built house this week. Good timing. Also, all his perks were revoked immediately, so he was left cleaning out his office and they took his car(s), so he had call someone to get a ride home, from an office phone of course. I'm sure that's how it's done in the biggs, but c'mon.

I find it hard to believe that they are going to take a risk on anyone other than an established big name coach, and even that is not a sure bet. They decided to have instant relevance in baseball by hiring Horton, and he rapidly made them a playoff club, but he's not gotten them to a Series yet, and Phil is 78 and he wants a title! My money is on someone worth spending $5+ million a year on, not on gambling on a coordinator except in a very special case. Say what you want about Belloooti, but he knew talent when he hired the Chipster. I'd tend to agree. Again, I have no name and am calling no shots, but one has to believe they are going to flash some cash and grab the biggest "sure bet" coach they can. So basically, no Beau Baldwin type thing here. They are going to try an pry away a winner from somewhere I think. Charlie Strong is available!!! Let's say the rumors of $10M per year backed by Uncle Phil are true. Who does that open up as an option for them? I'll start: 1. Dana Holgorsen 2. Greg Schiano 3. PJ Fleck Fleck to me is the one Oregon isn't and probably shouldn't be considering - I think they need a coach who has been relatively overachieving somewhere that doesn't have Oregon's vast resources, but is still big-boy football. I know some NFL retreads didn't work out as college HC's but Carroll's story makes it enticing to try and go that route. Will be interesting to watch it unfold.

I mean... Saban makes $7m. If Knight finances $10m per year, you have to think even Nick Saban might listen for a 50% pay raise and basically unlimited support.

I'm having trouble on the timing of the firing. Sunday MH was to meet with the AD but word was it would be after the rankings meeting on Tuesday. Then a few days of speculation. AD is supposedly in Dallas for the meeting. Pretty much set for Wednesday after the meeting. All of a sudden MH gets fired on Tuesday
Did the AD fly back for that? Then skype in his picks for the playoffs (Jim Mora)
Or did he phone in to MH. Hey mark...thanks for nothing. GTFO

Fiutek wrote a moderately funny article on the rumor they will pay $10M/year, which is more than Saban makes, more than Meyer makes, and more than Harbaugh makes, by a decent margin. It's also more than Carroll and Bellichick make. In other words, stupid money, and really would make a complete mockery of college football, not that Oregon doesn't do that now. Schiano and $10M/Year should never be in the same paragraph...ever, same goes for Fleck and Holgersen. $10M/year....Gruden? $10M/year....Payton? $10M/year...Arians? heck, might as well put a call in to Cowher. Stoops? Franklin? Screw it, go get Beau Baldwin, he'd probably go further than all of them!

Sources saying that Les Miles was seen in Beaverton earlier this week...uh oh. If this does pan out, that would suck. I actually like Les Miles and hes a coach who's teams are seen as tough. Certainly a players coach. twitter.com/intent/like?tweet_id=804159170773553152

Miles is no yes man. can't coach an offense or a QB to save his life though... This is a guy that had OBJ and Jarvis Landry as his top two WRs and Jeremy Hill has his RB in 2013 and ranked #35 in total offense and lost 3 games with them! He possibly had one of the most stacked offensive teams in history in terms of future NFL talent (Alfred Blue was back up RB!) and his results were resoundingly mediocre considering what he had. I mean, maybe I am being pedantic, or unfair. but putting out 35 ppg with future NFL WRs, QBs and RBs is... I dunno. Meh. he had 6 NFL players that were chosen that year in the draft. and his game log shows a bunch high scores against scrubs, and low scores against anybody with a pulse. Mettenburg passed for 3,000 yards and 22 TDs. I mean, that is pretty good, sure. but if we project our own 3M to a full season of starting, he'd have a little over 2400 yards, 19 TDs... and nobody is going to confuse our offense for potent! 9 players were chosen for the NFL draft in 2013. on a 9-3 team. He'd be a good get from the perspective of giving Oregon a tough defense... I will give you that! Oregon's last two stands against us showed a complete lack of will to get a stop and win. We did not bust out a long run (save Pierce's 20 odd yarder at the end). We pushed them over for two long drives and won. repeated 7 yard chunks right up the gut. over and over. To that end, i'd agree.
