This past Tuesdsay, 12/19, marked the three week anniversary of Bray being announced as new HC.
There are certainly a lot of questions regarding how much time and resources the former coach had dedicated towards pursuing recruits to fill this years class. Long before he was offered and decided to accept the MSU job, there were far more question than answers to explain a lack of effort. He had no idea who we would play, what conference would we be in, would any games be televised, etc... all the things recruits want to know. Keep in mind there were those right here on this board questioning if we would even have a season next fall.
Let's just say, all the things you would want to know in order to recruit the best possible players you can find, were all unknowns. There was ZERO certainty for the future of the football program over much of the past 4 months. You can build a plan around an unknown variable or two or three if you have several other knowns to work with. But how on earth do you build a recruiting plan with zero knowns and a mountain of unknowns to work with. What can you possible tell a prospect with any certainty?
So back up three weeks. Not only does Bray take over a new position he has a lot of adjusting to get used to, he does so at a time there is severe duress in the program(surprise coaching departures, no future schedule, and a lot of other uncertainties), he also is up against early signing period (three weeks out from his hiring) and he's short staffed.
Oh yea, what about the issue of keeping the current players, let alone finding new ones. He also had that big task on his plate too with vultures swooping in from all directions trying to pick off our roster one by one.
No sweat right. Ready, set, go...find and fill all the coaching vacancies with quality hires, put together a quality recruiting class, keep as many of the current players as possible happy and at home, and also make time to deal with all the HC interviews and other administrative matters a new hire is expected to deal with, all while still operating with mostly unknowns for the future, oh and do it all in the next three weeks.
Given the circumstances, I think this class is probably objectively way better than it should be, and yet not as good as we all wish it were. The last part is probably true almost every year after signing day. That's my take.

The last part is probably true almost every year after signing day. That's my take. I’m right there with you. I can’t imagine taking on the task that Bray did when he did. It speaks volumes of his resolve and tenacity, and particularly his love for and commitment to this program. I love how he is pulling in so many assistants who also have a love for OSU and have established themselves through some diverse experiences in the coaching ranks. I absolutely believe that our football program can move forward and be a healthy and relevant player. I also believe that our best chance to do that relied on selecting a stable, well-grounded guy who knew exactly what he was in for and what our culture demands. I am 100% confident that Bray is that guy. Anyone thinking that this would be easier than this, or that we should magically knock it out of the park on signing day given our circumstances is even more myopic than I tend to be. I just look forward to knowing who we have locked for next season, and then watching our players and staff go to work. When recruiting gets going for the 2025 class this spring and summer, our coaches will know just where they need to focus and get out ahead of things. I expect next year’s class to be solid and intentional. I can’t wait to see how that all plays out with a schedule, clear direction and a season under our belt as a PAC 2 team. I actually am looking forward to our schedule, with a lot of new opponents and a chance to see on the field what the new Beavs identity will look like on offense and defense.

The last part is probably true almost every year after signing day. That's my take. Less than a week latter and already time to amend my own take. A lot has happened since signing day and I imagine some more positive additions will be coming before it's all over. With the addition of two very promising QB's and now a WR with offers from everyone, I think this class is both better than it should be, and plain outright good not even considering the circumstances of the past several months.

In all fairness, I don't think that any of us expected this kind of week for the Beavers. This is truly amazing what Bray and Co. have done. Kudos to them ... such a flip in momentum and outlook. Just need to get Malachi, a couple veteran tackles to finish out the offense. I wouldn't mind adding a little more to the defense as well.

So yeah, no mass exodus... solid recruiting class... built a very solid staff. Now the "D&G" philosophy seems to be invading the baseball board. I'm thinking they might just drop baseball! 🤔🤣

A lot of middle of the road people (myself included) can be surprised as well at how well the week has gone for recruiting. A lot of talent came in a short time. I think there was also a big question mark of how well the staff could recruit and sell the program despite the obstacles. According to the Anderson interview, they did quite well with that. Looking forward to see if we can grab a couple tackles to fill out the offenses and a couple more pieces on defense.

They have done something I didn’t expect and can’t explain. Brought in a lot of good prospects as players in a very short time. Good for them!

Sigh. The Beavers were already going to lose 11 fulltime senior starters and another five that either started at times or played a lot. Another three (that I know of): Fuaga, Gould and Gray are going for the NFL. So we have 14 fulltime starters and five additional players off the table from the start. Obviously, it doesn't leave a lot left to lose as far as starters but that was true when looking at all the seniors going into the season. The Beavers have lost nine players to the transfer portal to this point. Six were starters and Aidan Chiles got his one series a game. According to 247Sports, DJU, Velling, Mascarenas-Arnold, Jermod McCoy and Aidan Chiles were all 4-star transfers. Jake Overman and Akili Arnold were 3-stars. As kickers, Sappington and Josh McCormick do not get rated. You have 22 starters along with a punter and kicker. OSU lost 11 through eligibility and 3 to the NFL. And then another six to the portal as of now. So, as it stands right now, 20 of 24 regular starting players, not counting the part time senior starters. It's great that Martinez and (hopefully) Bolden and Lolohea are back. But pretty much every other big name starter bailed. I like what Bray has been able to do but he still has some work to do. The OL additions are not close to being upgrades and, while I really like the QBs that are coming in, on paper it's no upgrade. Also, there's a need to fill out a few more positions in general. Luckily, the portal is still full of players.

I'd suggest you try and see all the positives, but in months of posts you continually take any positive and negate it with a litany of what you see as negatives. But, the best part... all the recent "happenings" of winning the lawsuit, coaching hire, recruiting class, portal additions, scheduling, NIL pool gains, etc have shown you to be the Grinch that continues to ignore his own negative illusions. Xmas came and went, and in the Fall of '24 OSU football will will tee it up. Can't wait for you next plethora of pessimistic posts.

I've been positive about a lot of stuff, including a lot of the stuff you listed (the lawsuit victory, Bray hiring, the incoming recruiting class (although it's a work in progress) and scheduling. You can find my posts. I'll continue to be positive about things that are clearly positive. I'm not interested in spinning negatives as positives.

He gets off on attacking fellow Beavs. He waits for you to vent, and then he pounces.....I believe he referred to multiple posters on here, recently, as POS.......He is the worst.

Luckily, the portal is still full of players. Don't worry about rgeorge, he thinks a handful of Colorado OL and some others equals, beavs in the natty next year. The bowl game PROVED that what is left is scary, and not competitive in P5, OL getting man handled DBs coverage, etc.. Can some of them improve, of course, and some will grow a lot, but nothing we saw yesterday said, "look out next year"! I suspect we aren't done losing players yet either, and may find another portal player or two. We're likely 2 or 3 years from knowing where we'll end up, meantime we'll win some MW games and take our lumps in P5, and suffer fan losses which happens when your team loses direction. It's going to be a rough ride for many. Watching now and DL getting mauled, anyone says we're in good shape is ignoring truth. If facts are negative, we're all guilty. .
