Not a shocker. The Yankees took a big risk by signing Ellsbury to such a high money long term deal. Those type of contracts never usually work out towards the end of the contract. Sometimes they never work out period. Sometimes they never work out at all due to injuries like in Ellsburys case. They still owe him a lot of money next year 21 million plus a buyout of 5 million for the following year.

Depending on final landing spot ( very early retirement ), maybe Mitch could use a volunteer hitting coach. When healthy, he had a great eye and a line drive swing that developed into pretty God power as well.

He had a couple real good years, but you are right. the injuries started mounting and he never really quite got back to form.

I just think it's unfair the he is considered one of the biggest busts of all time. Injuries should not make you a bust. Of course Blazer fans would not agree due to the cases of Bowie & Oden.
Chris Davis of the Orioles.....now he is a bust.

Chris Davis of the Orioles.....now he is a bust. His one greatest season - 2011 - was spoiled (regarding MVP award) by some of his teammates undisciplined, fried chicken gulping, beer swilling, September fade ("Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, and John Lackey spent all September eating biscuits and fried chicken, drinking beer, and playing video ...") Bosox 7-20 that September.....Yankees won 16 games that month for the Division title. Still, he finished 2nd overall in MVP vote.....and was 1st place amongst position players.

Definition of "bust" is highly open to interpretation. Chris Davis certainly struggles at the plate, but he is there to play and potentially help your team. $ for $ he's less a bust than a guy collecting a paycheck for the better part of three (will be 4 in 2020) seasons doing nothing to help the team win. Not that the Orioles win...

Well, if injuries don;t make you a bust, then signing a contract that the Orioles freely offered doesn't either. I may feel like s%#t not playing well for $23 mil/yr, but at least I'm out there competing and providing some help... Since his contract... 520 games... 1800 ABs... 230 R... 92 HRs... 230 RBI... lots of Ks, low BA, but he is playing. Bust? Yep for the $ paid. But, there is no way JE isn't also a bust. And, for the contract vs production, one of the biggest in history.

And, for the contract vs production, one of the biggest in history. It should just be classified a little differently when it is not necessarily the player's fault. To me, it's different when you can't play versus playing and just sucking it up every game. Technically they're both colossal wastes of money.
