With Owen committing to UCLA for 2019, Van Lith could find herself struggling for playing time for her first 3 years if she chose them. Here, she understudies Slocum for 1 year, and then runs the show for the next 3. Now let's hope that either (or both!) 2020 point guard Paige Bueckers or Caitlin Clark pick UCONN soon to improve OSU's chances of getting Hailey!

I'd want a player that has OSU as their first choice and not their back up plan.
But I do understand what you mean, best to tilt the playing surface to your advantage.

Well, who knows, maybe OSU ends up being Hailey's first choice. Nevertheless, being a player's second choice is not necessarily undesirable, just a little less than ideal. I'm pretty certain I read that Sydney Wiese dreamed of playing for UCONN, but never got an offer. Therefore it seems more than likely that OSU was not her first choice, but everything still turned out pretty well anyhow.

One interesting piece of information is that all 3, Paige Buckers, Caitlin Clark, and Hailey Van Lith are followed by and follow the Beaver wbb page on instagram. I never like to look too far into this stuff, but seems like its only really followed by girls being recruited.

Well, OSU wasn't Destiny's first choice, but I don't think any of us are too sorry that we turned out to be her second. Ed O"Bannon and Toby Bailey signed with UNLV, and they were put on probation. This allowed them to switch schools and play right away, so off they went to UCLA, followed a bit later by Ed's brother Charles. Ed becomes player of the year his senior year, dropped into pushup position and kissed the Bruin logo when he was taken out at the end of his last home game, and UCLA went on to win the national championship. UCLA being his second choice didn't seem to bother anybody, including Ed, at that point.

The top players (recruits) have so many options and how to process the best fit with all of the colleges putting pressure to sign with them makes it a very tough decision for a teenager and their families. So any of their top 5 could really be their #1 Destiny is a perfect case I'm just glad she did it early so we get 3 years of her leading the backcourt for us.

But when she realized that Maryland wasn't "a good fit" for her, she looked around and decided that OSU could provide her with the experience she desired. So we were not her first choice, or any choice, as a high school student. But as a more experienced college student we were her first choice. Most of the time we don't have access to an athletes list in order of preference instead they list them in no particular order.

Weren't we Gary Payton's second choice? It's a long time ago, but I seem to remember that he was headed to St. John's, and then came our way for reasons I don't recall. Perhaps someone with a stronger memory of this can deny or confirm with more detail.
In any case, I sure don't remember anyone complaining about being his second choice.

Perhaps someone with a stronger memory of this can deny or confirm with more detail. In any case, I sure don't remember anyone complaining about being his second choice. You recall right - and a big "thank you" to Lou for blowing it, big time..... According to the LA Times: The pace is slow in Corvallis, Ore., a college town in the lush Willamette Valley about 100 miles south of Portland. Downtown looks like the set from "American Graffiti." Gangs around Corvallis are the kids who hang out at the local convenience store on weekends and cruise in their hot rods. When Gary Payton, a high school basketball phenom, visited on a recruiting trip to Oregon State in 1986, he was ready to go right back home to Oakland. A street-wise city boy, Payton felt out of place in Corvallis. Besides, Payton had dreamed of attending St. John's, where he could bask in the national limelight. He even made an oral commitment to St. John's after visiting New York, where he toured Manhattan in a limousine. Lou Carnesecca, coach at St. John's, closed the deal with Payton's parents. "He came to our house and gave us a lot of promises," said Payton's father, Al. "He told us he was going to take care of Gary. I wanted him to go where they had an older coach who could look after Gary because he'd never been away from home before, not even for a night." But Carnesecca reneged after signing another guard, and Payton eventually signed with Oregon State. Welcome to big-time college basketball. "It kind of shocked me that they had set me up like that," Payton said. "They were running a game." Carnesecca said: "We made a mistake. We should have signed him. He's a great player. We really blew it." Go Beavers!

Saw a video on UCONNs thread of Hailey Van Lith. Said she was talking to 8 or 9 schools, listed Oregon State, Oregon, UCLA, Louisville, Notre Dame, Connecticut, and Baylor. Very recent since it was from June 22.

Saw a video on UCONNs thread of Hailey Van Lith. Said she was talking to 8 or 9 schools, listed Oregon State, Oregon, UCLA, Louisville, Notre Dame, Connecticut, and Baylor. Very recent since it was from June 22. here's that video interview. The radio station is in central Washington, but the interviewer's comment about women's basketball being a "BIG DEAL" for east coast schools (he specifically was referencing back to Hailey's list of UCONN, Baylor, Louisville, Notre Dame) and by default not so or less for coast west coast schools/teams (ie like Oregon State, Oregon, and UCLA, the 3 western team she mentioned), rubbed me the wrong way. He specifically honed in on UCONN. For a west coast station, he had/has east coast bias.
Also , Hailey specifically noted that UCONN does not have a 2020 commitment at point guard yet, so she is definitely paying attention to this issue (as I suspected above). She said they will have in the future (presumably her or someone else)

Thanks for posting the radio clip......I love it when material like this pops up on the board. I'm not very tech savvy, so I'd never track it down on my own.....
For "small town" radio the interviewer did a pretty good job. He asked concise questions, and was respectful enough to let Hailey do most of the talking. She's speaks in a rather impressive fashion for a kid not yet into her Junior year in high school...
Love to see her sign with the Beavs..But a LOT of Beaver Basketball is going to be played before she laces up....

Listening to her entire interview, Hailey wants to study engineering. I think that rules out a few of the schools listed, including UO. Oregon State has a fantastic Engineering School Hailey! GO BEAVS. Very impressed with her maturity for a 16-year old. Clearly has some great parents.

GO BEAVS. Very impressed with her maturity for a 16-year old. Clearly has some great parents. Actually of the seven schools she listed, only UofO has no engineering. OSU, UCLA, Baylor, Louisville, Notre Dame and UCONN all have engineering, although available majors/programs differ in a few ways among the schools. However, OSU has more engineering and related majors (14-15), therefore more choices than even UCLA, UCONN and Notre Dame (10-12 each). Baylor has the fewest by far. Hailey should pick OSU!!!

While she may have left a little early from the basketball camp at OSU last week, I find it fortuitous that she was in Corvallis the same week as the local and national attention, media spotlight, and celebration surrounding Oregon State playing for and winning the National Championship in baseball...proving that a student athlete can win a National Championship in a very significant sport at ORST. The strong positive vibes about OSU certainly could not have hurt!!
