a 6' 9" center shooting threes from the corner - that is impossible to defend; like what I am hearing.

mbabeav - you figure she can nail the corner 3 better than Katie, or Mik, or Aleah, or Destiny, or Kat? Not likely ! Why would you drag a once in a generation 6'9" player with mobility out to the corner when her maximum value is near the paint as a shot blocker, a defender, a passer, and a rebounder? Maybe it'll happen but when it does a lot of opposing coaches will be happy....
GO BEAVS !!

When I watched the video posted of the Ribet game, it was clear that they were not utilizing Andrea near the basket. She was taking way too many outside shots and (at least in that game for the portions I watched) wasn't hitting many. I'm pretty sure Rueck will user her mostly around the paint, more like Marie (only playing a forward position with Jo, initially, then Patricia Morris at center).

I'm totally surprised by the number of people on this board who think Jo will be a factor next year. If she were it would be a basketball miracle. She's not there - she is nowhere near.
Jo is slow afoot; she is rigid with her hands; she does not slide on defence; she is very slow to roll around a screen. Her few strengths are strictly limited to her height. Coach Rueck has not put her on the floor at an important juncture this entire season. Yesterday when Gulich needed a breather Thropay was subbed in, not Grymek.
Next year's team will be fast, and it will pass sharply and cut away from the ball a great deal. To play on this team you MUST be a good passer. I do not believe that a player with Jo's speed, Jo's passing skills is going to fit into the up tempo, rapid fire skill set of her teammates.
GO BEAVS !!

That's fairly easy to respond to...you spread the floor out more and this will open it up for back-doors and gives the guards like 6'2' Katie McWilliams to post a shorter guard or for M. Pivac to do the same. I noticed a lot of the time, including our team that the Post players aren't even guarded if they leave the key leaving their Post player to rebound or block shots from attacking guards.

Agree 100% on Grymek. I don't know if it is a good thing or bad thing that she is here for only two years. She usually doesn't jump or block out either. IF SR can turn her into an animal and add some muscle it might turn out as a decent sub to give our post a break. If I was the opposing coach I would look to foul her and have her shoot FTs in every key situation and attack her when I was on offense.

I suspect next year's team will have as many as 3 first time starters.....(maybe more like 2 with Mik, KTMac and Taya getting the initial starting nod). I too believe that SR just doesn't have enough time to bring Jo along the way he has 4 year players. Do you give minutes to developing your players here for 3 more years? Especially if they have a higher ceiling even over the course of the season?
AA needed to be at a school like Ribet (student visa-wise), but she may not have grown much on the court given her having to sit out and the role in which she was used......that said, living close to PM's family probably did her a world of good.
It's going to be a very interesting Fall, right after a very interesting March madness....
Go Beavers!

It was more of a rhetorical statement than anything - not expecting her to take 3's in college, but if she can hit a 15 ft shot like Marie, that would really force a double team - lots of give and goes, back-doors and a wide open key for someone else to drive. Andrea's major scoring is going to come from catching the lob and dropping it through the hoop from about 2 ft out. How well her high school athleticism will translate to collegiate athleticism is to be seen, but I trust in Coach Scott!

Granted, there will be a lot of guards vying for PT, but I don't know if I'd say right now that Tudor is a bench player next season. I mean, obviously, we'll be playing with a deeper bench next year, but it's hard to envision those 32 MPG in conference play being the 6th (or 7th) man.

2ndGenBeaver----3 first time starters !! ?? I'd really like to know who you have in mind....I presume that Slocum is one of the 3. Care to share your thinking?

If this was in response to what I said, let me clarify: I said "initially Jo"... simply because it takes time for new players to learn to play defense in Rueck's system. I see Patricia Morris taking over the center position sometime in the pre-season, but initially Rueck, as he usually does, lets the veterans start in the early games (the way Washington started this year and then Corosdale took over). In response to another posting here... could there be three first time starters? Probably not at the beginning of the season, but if Aquino is as good as advertised, we could see a starting line up next year that features Slocum, Morris and Aquino. A lot depends upon how they develop as defensive players. There may be two different starting line-ups next year that depend upon the match-ups to the opposing team... a twin towers starting line-up and the usual three-guard starting line up. Unfortunately, in either case, some very good players are going to be sitting at the start of the game.

I mean, obviously, we'll be playing with a deeper bench next year, but it's hard to envision those 32 MPG in conference play being the 6th (or 7th) man. You are right - Kat probably remains a starter....but I think some starter guard from this year will have a role change..... (rampant speculation ahead....) I am thinking the real "hole" next year (obviously) is at center. And Taya has been a stretch 4, classic stretch the defense wing, not the Deven Hunter "go become one of top 5 rebounders in OSU history" types (though she is just a frosh!) Our 'weakness' (not a good term, mind you) this year has been around rebounding and spacing, much of which has been solved in years past with 2 bigs playing big (Hamblin+Hunter, Orum/Brown + Gulich) and ~three sharp shooting guards (one or more of which has been a very good rebounder - Jamie or Mik types). I think next year looks more like (in my order of starters/bench). C: Andrea Aquino, Patricia Morris, Joanna Grymek F: Taya Corosdale, PM, Maddie, Janessa G/F: KTMac, Jazz, Mik G: Kat, Mik, Kalmer PG: Destiny, Goodman, Mik A couple of things - SR has not to date displaced a returner to begin the season: AA and PM will have to displace Joanna as a starter assuming they are up for it (and you have to figure the 6th ranked player in the country should be able to do that, though PM might come in more polished than AA, I think the ceiling on AA at post might be higher). Has the past year with DS practicing moved her past that "new" status to where she starts out the gate? I think so..... But then comes the dilemma - you have some very talented guards, all of which do some (somewhat) non overlapping things well....rebounding, 3 balling, defense, assists. We may see a bunch of 20 minute players next year, or a starting 5 might emerge, but I think with the talent infusion and our needs (aforementioned rebounding, bigs playing big in the paint), we will have a very different team next year. That said, I am all geared up for a great weekend and March run for the Beavers, and if we are top-10 in our "reloading" year, I can't wait to see what SR does when he has an embarrassment of riches next season. Go Beavers!

Great court speed and great ball handler and passer, drives to the hoop well. Her an Slocum on the court would solve our ball handling woes very quickly. Of course, Jazz won't know the plays early, but she'll be one of the most experienced players on the team given her high-level experience for Australia. Would be weird if our starting lineup at some point next year featured 4 new players, with all of this year's players vying for a little leftover playing time (but that's my hope, that the new players are all that good).
