I have seem some chatter about the topic hijacking some other threads, so I wanted to pull it to a new post.
1-2-3 were pretty obvious, though you could quibble about the numbers. There was a real question about 4.
Alabama, Ohio State, and USC seemed the obvious choices. I think it was obvious that the Tide were the fourth-best team, but Ohio State and USC both had the same number of wins, having played more difficult schedules. The Trojans had the most forgivable loss with a three point loss against Washington State in Pullman on a Friday with three injured linemen. However, USC also had the least forgivable loss in a 35-point loss in South Bend.
Ultimately, I thought that the Trojans were the most deserving of the three teams (no FCS teams on the schedule and nine conference games) but playing in the worst of the big five conferences, a conference that would force USC to play in Pullman on a short week. The Trojans, the most deserving team in the least deserving conference?
Does anyone have a different read on this?

Strength of schedule my a$$. Like that matters to the committee.
As you point out SC played 9 conference games, no FCS teams, Texas and Notre Dame.
But the most impressive thing about their schedule is the fact they played 13 straight weeks in a row without a bye. To finish with only 2 losses and win the CCG with that schedule should be as good as going undefeated compared to some of these other schedules.

I think SC and tOSU had a beef. That ND loss for SC hurt.
Bama didn't have a strong SOS but that didn't stop them from being the 4th.
I guess conference championships don't matter, either.

Yeah they didn't win their conference championship, but at least they MADE it to theres, which is not something Bama can say... and they ended with the same one loss as Bama... The most disappointing thing to me... of all the years to include a great G5 story into the playoff, this was it. UCF ended 12-0, only undefeated team in all of college football this year and they can't even SNIFF the playoffs... what's the point then... Why even have G5 teams in FBS... They should be in their own division between FCS and FBS...

In this format I'm good with it. Those are two awesome football games.
Looking forward to it going to 8, hopefully soon, so the beauty pageant part is completely removed from the equation other than picking who the wildcards will be. But that could simply be the two highest ranked non champion team averaged from the AP and Coaches bowl, scrap the committee altogether.
Going to 8 automatically makes winning your conference the ultimate goal. No more debate about how many conference games you play or OOC SOS.

At least then the talking heads are arguing about teams 9-12 as being deserving of the final spot and they'd be a long shot to win it all anyways (IMO).

I simply look forward to the day this joke of a playoff ends and we do a real playoff. I am sure several teams could make a convincing case. Wisconsin more so than SC. Bama got in on its legacy and name. that is it. Yeah, one loss, but it played a weaker overall OOC schedule than many other teams. But that also doesn't mean Bama doesn't deserve to be in the mix!!! it is why 4 is a joke. Football is football. any given Saturday type of game. 1 loss, 2 losses... those are damn impressive records. All those teams have a claim. It needs to be 8 teams in the bare minimum. Each P5 conference winner should be in it, and then some at larges with at least one dedicated to a top G5 team (UCF).

Alabama did play a weaker schedule.
But, that doesn't mean they are a weaker team.
I wish Wiscy had won though and kept them out!

This seems to be a common statement here, but I don't understand the logic and disagree with it wholeheartedly. Alabama played Florida St w/Francois, Fresno State who played in the MWC Championship, and Colorado State who we unfortunately all know is not a pushover. Wisconsin, on the other hand, played 6-6 Utah State, FAU which did win some conference Championship, and hapless BYU led by the fearless Sitake, who it appears couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. There are several arguments for Wisconsin's inclusion, but OOC schedule isn't one of them in my opinion.

Now watch the Crimson Tide roll after just getting in! They're the gold standard for college football and have held that title for a long time. Funny to think Saban was such a flop in the pros though. If Pete Carroll could have kept all his assistants on board at USC and remained there, they would have been right at the top of the heap too. Coaching continuity counts once you have built the dynasty-level program.

Saban is a great coach, he'd do fine in the NFL with the right players, it's a way different set up when you have a franchise run by a president, GM, etc.
Pete Carroll got railroaded out of college football. Oh well, he got to go back to the NFL, where he was viewed as a failure there too, and prove he's not.

I've got it! Someone should come up with a mathematical formula that assigns values to specific milestones, like conference championships, strength of schedule, overall wins, etc. Then computers could calculate the top teams to play in....wait, what? That's been done already and everybody complained about it? That's why we ended up with the system we have now? Huh, weird.
Never mind!

Cheatin' Pete did not get "Railroaded". He got caught and ran away and left someone else to clean up his mess.

=================================
Ohio State lost by five touchdowns to unranked Iowa. That's a far, far worse loss.
