Heck, If anything, put him on the team as a scout team player. It'd be sort of like the wrench throwing secne in dodgeball. You're all forgetting the one player who spearheaded the end of the streak: Ken Simonton III as RB coach

I wouldn't mind seeing Nigel Burton come back to coach the defensive backs. He was here from 2003-2007 as a secondary coach. MB.

I wanna say Nigel was a DC at Nevada. Don't know how that team did defensively, but he got hired on at PSU the next year I think.

Didn't have a great defense at Nevada but that wasn't enough time. He did a great job as a recruiter here though! Go Beavs!

If we got SJ as the RB coach, we would be getting a heck of a lot more than a former OSU and NFL great, we would be getting an extremely fine and intelligent human being. Given the rebuilding task at hand, anyone who can keep the players on point when the L's pile up (SJ never was on a Super Bowl contender but still excelled) has immense value. I think getting SJ as a coach would be great from the nostalgia point of view. Who knows if he can coach. Any chance we can game the system for another year of eligibility from him? You're an 18 year old high school running back. All pro Steven Jackson walks in your front door and tells you, you need to come play for Oregon State. Are you f'ng kidding me, that would be awesome. Who's saying no to SJ?

That would be awesome. Lubick. He can recruit. He recruited for Erickson. Didn't he get some of the Oregon State JCs to put them over the top or am i wrong? Lavonte Burfict at ASU (I know. I know, but, he was probably the highest rated recruit ever to commit to ASU.......I think).

I want Inoke Breckterfield so bad We'd need to pry him from Wisconsin. Going back to this, Inoke was making 255K this year from what I've seen. Chad Kauha'aha'a had a salary of $290,004 here supposedly. Inoke and Jonathan were here together for two years I think. If they got along and both Jonathan and Inoke and interested, money doesn't look as though it'll be an issue.

Who's saying no to SJ? It's great and all for recruiting, and I do believe recruiting is absolutely vital. But you also have to have SOME coaches who can coach up (or out) talent. You can't just recruit 4 stars and say "go out there and play some motion offense"...Oh wait, I'm channeling WT again.

Quoting Jonathan Smith on Lubick via Eggers (link to article below) "Matt was hugely responsible for recruiting guys like Steven Jackson, Nick Barnett and Richard Seigler — guys who could really play," Smith says. "It's been good to have him on the staff here. Our operation hasn't changed any. He brings things from the defensive side that have helped. He has coached throughout the league (at OSU, Arizona State and Oregon), which is a huge benefit. We're still running the same system. We still practice the same way. The players' responsibilities are still the same." portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/373508-257236-ex-beaver-in-a-good-place-at-uwI'd be okay with Lubick as OC. We need dynamic recruiters, and has coached both defensive and offensive. Do you think Peterson just promotes him though? Again, this is where OSU needs to give niner a competitive budget for assistants...

I figure if Coach Smith wants to hire the best defensive coordinator he knows, we could be seeing Banker come back. Poor form

I would hope it begins at 1.7, has lots of bonus opportunities so he could in theory make three, and that there have been assurances for extra money for qualified staff above what OSU has tradtionally paid. I love the idea of the bonus opportunities. Start out at a basic 1 million with tons of bonuses for academic achievements as well as athletic achievements that could push it well over 2 million or even 3 million if he grabs a brass ring. Edit: Dam, bba1111 beat me to it. Should I be worried that we had the same kind of thoughts? Yes

I'd love to see this as Niner's first hire (DC).
I'd go with Keith Heyward... better recruiter, Beaver... maybe can bring some of the #6 class with him... double win kids we get and ucks don't.

I'm all for bringing back some ex-players for the coaching staff -- if they are the best coaches for the job. While its warm and fuzzy to have players return, I'd rather be less warm and fuzzy and win. Being that Niner knows the offensive side of the field, I really hope he brings in an experienced DC with a strong and proven track record.
