I didn't realize that the "5 star" ranking only went to top 50 prospects. That could mean that no O-lineman might get a 5 star ranking in certain years. Seems weird, and also casts a shadow for me in ranking that way. IMO, the top 5 kids at every position should be a 5 star. In the end, it helps to accentuate for me that there are a probably a ton of 4 stars who are just as good. With weird arbitrary criteria like this, it explains why a load of 3 stars are playing on Sundays, and why all but 4 or 5 top programs make a living off of 3 star kids - talented enough kids who mature and get coached up! I think I read Denver's team is a 2.47 average star rating with maybe one 5*... ratings are nice for the one's who's livelihood depend on it, but really mean squat to how a kid really turns out. Obviously talent is talent... but heart, desire, work ethic, emotional stability, and a little luck in the health department are much larger factors. So what was it that scuttled your path to greatness?

It just totally depends some years it is about the top 50, some years it is less. some years it is a crap shoot. Olive did that thing about the super bowl players and their HS rankings. DA was ranked the number 22 player in the nation by ESPN, I think, but was an overall 4*... That doesn't add up. DA as a freshman, had the biggest cannon arm of any player in the nation hands down. If he didn't go through coaching and scheme changes and had an running game worth a crap his senior year, He could of put up even more ridiculous numbers (and fewer ridiculous INTs I imagine) In the end it is kind of a silly game. Don't forget guys like Mike Hass, Nick Barnett, Steven Jackson, James Rodgers, Brandin Cooks. All guys that were 2 or 3* and generally absent of significant hype. Think about that, recruiting services are missing on a guy like STEVEN JACKSON! (of course this was like 2000). Cooks was basically nothing until UCLA sniffed at him, and we got a fairly lucky flip because of the coaching unrest at the time with UCLA.

Ruben Jackson? Does he count? He was a 5* JC transfer.
He didn't pan out, largely due to injury. but he was rated 5* in 2005.

Cooks was a 4 star recruit, according to Rivals, and Jackson, if I recall right was rated fairly high, especially toward the end of the season when OSU fought off a fair number of suitors.

He committed to UCLA early on and then flipped to OSU later on in the year. He was the prize of that recruiting class even back then

Bingo. The ratings and rankings are a bunch of BS. Compiled by fat slobs who sit in their mom's basement, eating cheetos, tweeting to teenage boys and surfing hudl. They may get out outside occasionally to watch game but they don't really know what to look for in a prospect. Once Nick Saban and Urban Meyer offer a kid they are automatically a 4 star. Get 2 more offers from USC and <insert other SEC school name here> and your a 5 star kid. Congrats. f%#* the recruiting services, and those of you that pay for that info (which is available everywhere for free) need to reconsider your life. /rant Trust in your coaches ability to evaluate kids that will- 1. fit into their school, system and philosophy. 2. actually want to attend and play.

Hyperbole aside... you are kind of right. But the reality is, in their HEIGHT (and online recruiting services are all foundering now) Rivals and Scout each had about 20 paid analysts. Seems like a lot until you realize there is something like 1 million high school football playing SENIORS! that doesn't even include Juniors and Sophomores. It is simply impossible to objectively evaluate them all. So the system relies heavily on hype and word of mouth. and yes of course, who offered who. a P-5 offer basically makes ANY athlete a 3*. side note: man, I was nearly positive Cooks was 3*, there must of been a late push on him because I definitely remember looking at him when he flipped and going oh man! what a steal! Guess I was wrong. I also remember the SJ committed there was a lot of talk about how on earth so many programs missed him. Then again, I am having hard time remembering yesterday these days! BUT my point stands. We have pulled in a ton of amazing talent that was very lightly recruited. the services flat missed. Stars rarely amount to much. I still believe in the old Riley-ism. Best indicator of future production is past production. If a kid was a stud in a fairly strong HS area or conference then chances are good he will continue to be a stud. It is one of the things that keeps Oregon recruits down... we lack the top to bottom quality of competition in most of the state.

I don't remember hearing about SJ until fall practice and how he stood out. In February it was largely about DA, Swancutt, Landingham, a couple of the many JC recruits and maybe Nicholson from what I recall. Stars are a way overrated measurement in my mine as well.

How many of the guys on that 2001 list are still in the NFL? I don't follow the NFL that well to know of more than a few. We got 2 of them.

Steven Jackson was a top 12 RB in the country if I recall... he came to OSU for Coach Erickson over an offer from Tennessee. At the time I don't think Vegas was a big recruiting hotbed so I think that's why he slipped under the radar a bit.
