I believe that at this particular time Coach Baldwin would be a bad choice as the new football coach.
My view has nothing to do with his ability, qualifications, etc. , etc..
Whether or not he is selected as head coach(or if someone else is) it seems almost inevitable that there are 3 years at least of losing (to put it mildly) seasons ahead.
OSU needs to hire a candidate who is going to be generally perceived as a "sure thing". That is a proven winner at the major college level. Yes, I know there is no such animal as a sure thing.
However OSU needs to hire a big enough name (even if it takes all the Gary Anderson remaining
money) to keep the program afloat. A big name coach will be given more leeway and patience
than will someone like Coach Baldwin who basically is OSU hot choice basically because his EWU team beat OSU and our current AD worked with him at EWU.
Also I think that it is a clear warning sign for trouble, that OSU seems to be the only Division 1 school that is high on him as a head Coach at this time.
In summation, in my view this hire would appear as if OSU is settling for someone who is a high risk when clearly the dire situation we are in requires much more than that.
As I said earlier, do I think he could succeed-Yes. However if he does not the downward death spiral of the program continues at a much more rapid pace.

Your comments make some sense if you knew what "sure things" were interested in the program. Since none of us know if there are "sure things" out there willing to take on the job then maybe Baldwin is the best "sure thing" we have.

Gary Andersen was a “big name” at the time, possibly on of the biggest names that changed hands that year. National medai hailed it as pretty much the surprise hire of the season. He didn’t get a whole lot of leeway and patience here.
Baldwin is looked at as a hot prospect way beyond the walls of our administrative offices.

I have seen nothing on the internet(search under Beau Baldwin possible head coaching positions, etc., etc.) except in regards to the OSU position that indicates he is a serious candidate for any other D1 head coaching positions.

I definitely think Baldwin's task would have been much easier following Riley. That's the kind of jump start I think he would have excelled in. OSU football right now is worse than a train wreck. I'll say this,if it's Baldwin, we're going to have to give him time. He's not turning this program around in 2 or 3 years.

Based on what? Just look at the improvement Cal saw this season. Cal lost to us last year, and just managed to go 5-7 without much of a QB. Hell, even as bad as this OSU team was, they were a couple of plays from winning 2 conference games even after a coaching change. It's not that hard to get to mediocre.

I probably overstated when I said hot prospect. Baldwin’s teams did very well against power 5teams over the years. They beat us. They beat a good WSU team last year I think. They gave #6 Oregon a tough game a couple years back, and that was after oregon stole their QB. They played a good UW team a very tight game.
Baldwin’s coaching abilities are at the very least recognized by schools at our level. He has a reputation for being great with QBs. Everyone here knows about Vernon Adams. With the exception of Gage Gubrud, who has yet to graduate, Adams could be arguably the least successful starting QB Baldwin has coached... Jon Kitna was his first, the other three I could find (Reilly, Mitchell and Nichols) were 3 of the top 5 passing yardage Quarterbacks in the CFL this season.
As far as being a hot prospect at a big name school, probably not, as far as being a hot prospect to move up from the FCS to the FBS, he probably was for his last 2-3 years at EWU. I certainly heard his name come up a lot after Riley left.

However at this "rock bottom" time for OSU football, the perception by fans, recruits,etc., that selecting Coach Baldwin was made because (a) OSU could not get anyone better (b)The AD worked with him before and (c)He is the "best we can do" seems to be a scenario that could result in further spiraling downward of the program as the inevitable losses in the next two to three years occur.

I am still trying to understand why so many have come to the conclusion that OSU is passing on a bunch of proven HC to hire Baldwin. What are people basing this on?
This is the worst P5 job in the country (or tied for last with Kansas) and there are many P5 openings. Yes, it would be great if OSU could convince Scott Frost to come to Corvallis but its not gonna happen. Sadly for OSU we don't have a proven coach that got fired for mistreating an athlete like WSU was able to find so more than likely OSU is gonna get little to no interest from the proven guys since those proven guys have better options.
Maybe (just maybe) Baldwin is getting the job because he is in fact the best candidate willing to take the job. I guess we could go with no HC in 2018, it'd be a bold move. Cotton would approve.

Certainly you may be correct that Coach Baldwin may be the best they can do. If so OSU should be willing to sign him to at least a 5 year contract because given the current state of the program(talent level, facilities, current AD and President, culture of the program,etc.) it is going to take at least that long at best. I would prefer that OSU give all the GA money left + more to get a proven winning D1 coach for a 3 year contract with incentives, renewal provisions,etc. |
