The most interesting quote from the article to me, and quite applicable to the situation we find ourselves in:
"When you're 1-11, you can't take a chance. We could take a risk and say, 'There's some young guy from wherever who is a receivers coach that's going to be a great coach.' Well, we can't afford that." --Fresno State Athletic Director Jim Bartko

Does anybody else read the buyout clause like I do? Sounds to me like they don't want him moving on DURING a season. It does not state "if he leaves prior to the conclusion of the 2019 season". Once they interject the word "or" into the mix that opens up the possibility of making a move after the end of each season if I'm reading this correctly. That is not how the actual contract provision reads. This is one of the problems with reporters attempting to interpret contractual provisions. (Or statutory authority. Or pretty much anything.) If Jeff Tedford leaves Fresno State prior to the conclusion of the 2019 football season, Fresno State is owed $1,500,000.00. I was wondering if the "or" was inserted by a reporter. Poor use of grammer.

We should fire Barnes, too, for good measure. And hire both Bartko and Tedford.

Wouldn't be so sure about that. I think a good QB coach could turn Luton into a quality PAC starter and since he only played 4 games this year he'd also be eligible for a medical redshirt so that coach could get 2 years out of him. Honestly, barring a grad transfer who else would start? Assuming they keep the class intact do they add a 3rd QB to the class and get another JUCO guy? Do they go with a true frosh? Does Moran stay back at QB and start? Is Willard ready for the job? I think Luton (if healthy) is probably the most likely starter at this point in time. I think only a grad transfer would change that in my eyes. He's accuracy and decision making is not PAC starting material IMO. Terrible turnovers, missed deep balls, can't move the chains. Give Petras, Moran, Dukart, Willard even Collins the keys instead of Luton. There's a reason Idaho was his only offer and JUCO is trash Decision making can improve with coaching and accuracy can be improved with better mechanics which can be taught (his footwork could be improved which would improve his accuracy). I am not defending Luton as a superstar but I am far from convinced that any of the other guys you mentioned would be any better in 2018. As I said, assuming Luton is healthy I'd bet on him being the starter in 2018 unless they get a grad transfer. I think there is a lot to like about Luton if you are a QB coach and if someone like Tedford got the gig I'd bet on big improvements over the offseason from him. (As for why Idaho was his only offer, that really isn't relevant and had more to do with being in an option offense in high school, its impressive he got any D1 offers).

My opinion on Luton: Big kid, big arm, not use to the speed of FBS yet, Has an early/high release point (hence the constant high overthrows), lacks touch on many throws. That being said he has upside. In fact, with some better pass pro and if he were a bit more comfortable with the FBS speed on defense, he could be very good. A guy like Tedford, I have no doubt (still my opinion) could; settle his feet, help fix his release point, get him pass pro and play design that is more consistent. Not to mention help him with reading progressions. With the right coaching, this kid could be very good eventually! Go Beavs!

Bartko just resigned from CSUF.
