Made me think about my years at OSU.
1975 Dee's last year. Lost to Grambling State and San Diego State at Civic Stadium before crowds of about 16,000. Beat WSU 7-0 to finish 1-10 but not last place because WSU went 0-7 for last.
1976 Went 2-10 Beat Cal 10-9 and Hawaii 59-0 to finish the season in Honolulu.
1977 Beat #13 BYU and then lost 6 straight to finish 2-9.
1978 3-7-1 tied Tennessee and beat WSU and #9 UCLA-We had turned the corner! After graduation...
1979 Beavers go 1-10 Fertig replaced by Avezzano who goes 0-11 in 1980.
I feel for the students who haven't had much success in their last few years at OSU.

I was at OSU 1997-2004 (start your Tommy Boy jokes now).
I remember being able to walk up to the stadium and show your ID and pick out your own row. I also remember having to be overly friendly to a girl I didn't like at all to get her to give me her ticket to the 2000 Civil War because I couldn't get my own for some reason.
I never saw this though. I tip my hat to the kids who do come every week. Good for them.

I was at OSU 1998-2000, then came back in 2010-2013 I was in the stands as a student for the double OT civil war and it remains to this day one of my most cherished Oregon State memories. I am not sure I have been at another game that had that much unadulterated joy. I never missed a game as a student in 1998, 1999, or 2000 Like you said, for that 1998 Civil war, I walked straight up to the stadium, showed them my ID and walked over to the middle for the student section and started drinking whatever booze was hiding on me. by 2000 things have changed and students were camping out in front of the ticket counter at Gill to get tickets. Students section was selling out! It was pretty swell having a front row student ticket for the 2000 season! When I came back to school... I was 30. I felt weird about getting a student ticket. I was (well still am) married had two kids, a mortgage and all that. So I think in my entire time returning as a student for undergrad and grad school, I got one student ticket for a game my family was out of town for. I bought regular tickets like a chump. Oh well. My wife and I took a selfie from our season ticket spot in the upper wings in 2012 when we beat Wisconsin to open the season, with the crowd rushing the field behind us. that picture was a background picture on my computer for a REALLY long time.

This is fun.. maybe fun is not the right word.. stroll down memory lane.
1992 1-9-1 I really don't remember much. Civil War was a monsoon. We lost 7-0. 1993 4-7 and we win in Autzen for 2nd time in 3 years. JJ Young! Rahim Muhammed! We've turned the corner!! 1994 4-7 again. A winning season feels real close. Also this is the Shanklin slips Civil War. Anyhow.. I'm still convinced that we're slowly turning the corner. Some competitive losses that season IIRC. 1995 1-10. Forget what I said about turning the corner. Was looking great when we came out of the gate 1-0. I believe we had trouble moving the ball. 1996 2-9. The walls came crashing down. Lost to Montana at home 35-14. Blown out in weeks 2 and 3 by USC and Baylor. Week 4 I'm in Vegas and I bet on Cal to cover in Berkeley because i'm at a very low point in Beaver fandom and I'm convinced it's a lock. I miss a really, really nice parlay because the Beavs end up losing 48-42 in OT. We had scored 14, 17 and 10 the previous 3 weeks. Lesson learned- last time I ever bet against my team. I definitely threatened to light myself on fire but just got blackout drunk instead. #vegas
So.. 12-42-1 while spending my Saturdays drunk on Keystone and getting shot down by sorority girls. Not so good. But not Avezzano era bad.

I never missed a game as a student in 1998, 1999, or 2000 Top five favorite games to attend: 1998 Civil War - Like you said, so much unadulterated joy. 2001 Fiesta Bowl - Somewhere there's a picture of me with my arm around a Notre Dame coed while the guy she was with looks on with a look of "WTF just happened." Memorable for the win, sure, but the road trip with my best friends is what really made it memorable 1998 Cal/Arizona - Again, so much joy. Shared my first kiss with a very brief girlfriend after one of these games. It was more memorable than she was. 2000 Washington State - it was dad's weekend, and featured the longest continuous "wave" I've ever seen in a stadium. Felt like it lasted almost the entire 4th quarter. We were destroying the Cougs, and nobody wanted the fun to end. 2006 USC - Perfect but chilly weather, unlikely win....I thought I was going to pass out during the Stroughter punt return. So much fun.

So much fun. Yes! I took my Dad to that Dad's weekend game! I seem to think it was against Arizona, but I am probably wrong. I remember the Wave though! I was at both 2006 and 2008 defeats of USC. 2006 was amazing because there was something electric in the air before we even had the first snap. it was a bit cold but clear and sunny weather. The up to the game was "Okay, Beavs haven't been great, but they match up REALLY well here..." It was like destiny or something. 2008 was amazing for the same atmosphere. Night game, Thursday night, sparsely attended (though everybody is going to swear they were there... liars) but those, i dunno, 40K that was there were as loud as I have ever heard in my life. the sight of Quizz hitting USC over and over again for 7 yards, 10 yards, 7 yards, 8 yards. Never a big break... but over and over hitting into the secondary... To this day I cannot remember and OSU line getting a push like they were doing to USC that day. Just incredible seeing USC's D be slammed back 2 yards or more off the LOS, and QUIZZ cutting left and right off his blocks right the gut and splitting the LBs every single time. Where 2006 was a game of destiny, that included a powerful punt return touchdown and the batted pass of yore to seal it... 2008 was improbable domination by the big uglies and an freshman RB that was about to become a really big name.

Dad's weekend was against Stanford. Homecoming was against Washington State (which might be what you are remembering, nabeav). Arizona was in Tucson in 2000, but Arizona was in Corvallis in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2003. One of those may have been a Dad's Weekend.

If you wanted to, and I did a few times, you could follow the action on the field by walking the student section stands to keep pace with the ball placement. Or, you could just walk around the stands throughout the game to look for people you knew. The east and west stands looked like two triangles, with most fans stacked at the 50 and steadily dwindling down to nothing once you got to the goal line.
The people in the end zones? I never understood them at all.

I was there a little earlier and continued on until this day. At that time walking in with your bag of Togo's and alcohol... heading up the ramp and grabbing a bench at the 50 just before kick was no problem... even could have a bench behind as a table (later as a bed for the kids) if you went more toward the top.

They were in the endzones because you would get the Bi-Mart 2 for 1. That's how/where I spent my high school years...

THAT WAS MONEY. They had 3 grilled sandwiches I think (the bomb, cheesesteak and vegetarian) that were all terrific. Too bad the don't do the grilling any more.
