Too much money in college athletics, too much pressure to win, and too many unethical people in the sport.... "NEW YORK -- Federal prosecutors have announced charges of fraud and corruption against 10 people involved in college basketball, including assistant coaches at Arizona, Auburn, Oklahoma State and USC. The coaches named in court documents are Auburn's Chuck Person, Oklahoma State's Lamont Evans, Arizona's Emanuel "Book" Richardson and USC's Tony Bland. It was not immediately clear who would represent them at initial court appearances." www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/20824193/ncaa-basketball-coaches-10-charged-fraud-corruption

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. More shoe companies? More schools? More sports? Is this the tip of the iceberg?
The NCAA may have a tougher time turning a blind eye if the FBI is making arrests.

Hmmm, shoe companies? Not to mention any names, but I really hope this goes a lot deeper. Doubt that the NCAA will reform much given the potential loss of money if the scandal gets too big, let alone the legal might of some of the accused. But, at some point, one can only hope that karma comes back and bites some of the worst in the ass, although I'm sure there aren't any other PAC 12 teams engaging in such behavior (Sarcasm intended).

As I understand it, NCAA MBB tournament is the organization's golden goose. NCAA makes essentially nothing from FBS bowls.

I anticipate the NCAA might really bring the BIG hammer down, and have the teams in question "vacate" some set of past wins.......(I have never worked out how "vacating" a win is really punishment - it feels similar to if I found out my kid had snuck out of the house and gone to the midnight movie, his punishment would be for the kid and I to agree that he never saw the movie. He would still get to fondly remember the movie, it would not negatively his ability to go to the sequel, the crowd all came to the move and paid the movie theater for it, but my kid would have "vacated" his ability to count the movie as something he watched.....some punishment).
I have abandoned being passionate about pro sports because of what goes on there, college sports preserve the student-athlete illusion slightly, but maybe I should downgrade to following the high school level? (Any cracks about the fact maybe I am already there with Beaver football this year and MBB last year not appreciated) Sigh.

Already articles out calling for death penalty for Louisville (it is one of two schools that it is pretty easy to identify as a school involved in payments to recruits/families; South Carolina being the other). Definitely has the potential to have a big impact on some schools. It will be interesting to see how NCAA handles the payments to the four assistant coaches by agents and/or shoe/apparel company to funnel players their way. While NCAA says ultimate responsibility lies with a head coach, that is more for an institutional "infraction." Those payments at least how they read now were more of a personal nature -- assistants' lining their own pockets. Very well could have been happening without the knowledge of the head coaches. Though it still gives a "stink" to that school and possibly to the head coach too.
Found it interesting too that someone involved talked about targeting assistant coaches for the bribes because head coaches make too much money so they would be unlikely to bite. From some of these indictments it looks like some of these assistants ruined their careers over not too much money -- though that might just be what can be proven right now based on the wire taps, etc.

I think its naive to think the head coaches weren't in on these "transactions". The fish stinks from the head down. The question will be what they can prove, but I suspect some of these assistants will roll over on their bosses. Will the IRS go after the assistant coaches and the players's families for back taxes on income they received? I am glad this is finally coming apart, the NCAA refused to address the AAU problem and influence of the shoe companies for too long.

I don't know that you can call him dumb. How much money has he made? How many final fours did he go to? Like @2ndgenbeaver said above, those things may be tainted, but he still gets to keep the memories and people will still think of him as a hell of a coach. A cheater for sure, but also a hell of a coach.
Also, it infuriates me that we now have proof of bias in college sports. Shoe companies have a vested interest in certain schools being good, therefore it behooves them to get good players to those schools. Nike is paying Ohio State $252 million to wear their gear. You don't think they want good players going to that school to make sure that as many eyes as possible see the swoosh? You wonder why certain teams always start in the Top 25? There you go.
