Not sure they could do a lot better then him right now. Won at Osu which is hard as we are realizing again. He deserves the benefit of the doubt and if it doesn't work out, sure that the 2020 extension will mean little if they need to make a change other then make Mike richer.

I say its the best for both parties. Riley gets receives confidence from the higher ups, and the higher ups are only locked in for another 3 seasons, and it won't be an arm and a leg if things go south. My problems with contract extensions are when the first ones for a new coach happen after two seasons, with 3 seasons left, and the extension goes anywhere from 3-5 years. Unless that new coach took a program from bottom feeder to conference title contention, lighten up a bit on the years and wait another season.

What a godawful decision. I could rant about the culture/ecosystem of athletic departments for an hour. Sh!it is broken when a guy who is 16-11 gets another 3 million added to what will likely become his buyout. What kind of idiot AD does this? They create weakness from a position of power. It's like my credit score dropping 150 points and my bank calling me up to give me a better rate out of the goodness of their hearts. Stupid.

Riley's offense isn't easy to install and his turnaround is never going to happen overnight. Nebraska is happy with the way Coach conducts himself and if they can the defense rebuilt under Diaco they are going to win a lot of games. This AD isn't an idiot, he knows what he's got and understands the type of program Riley is trying to build, and he's given him a public vote of confidence. Riley's offense depends upon finding an NFL-quality QB. He hasn't found one yet but when he and Danny do, watch out. Nebraska is gonna put up a ton of points.

"if they can get the defense rebuilt under Diaco" is more than a moderately large "if". They fired a guy who had 7 straight 9+ win seasons. Why are they rebuilding? Riley is now 16-12.

It's not my love for Riley talking - it's just the simple way of the world today. There's a negative impact every time you make a change, a disruption to the continuity for the players, changes in systems, terminology, different styles. There is without question going to be a dip for 1-3 years when you are changing systems. Diaco is going to have an inconsistent year this season but the big leap will be between years 1 and 2 for his 3-4. This is the year where the defense struggles. You should know that they didn't fire Bo because 9 wins was his ceiling. They fired Bo because he embarrassed the University and he was generally an asshole.

Stupid. question, GA is due for an extension at the end of this season. How many wins this year would make that happen? 5? 6? my concern here is lets say they get to 5, thats 4 conference wins, that would seem remarkable at this point, and given the current AD's Garylove, entirely possible. Hey its all but the very slightest of upward trajectories. But we all know an extension would be a mistake. It seems like the perfect storm of a bad decision is forming before our eyes.

That 9 wins a year guy was one of the biggest jerks out there. They decided that if they're going to battle for regular inclusion in the next group after 2 elite national programs in their conference, they'd rather have someone leading them who will do it with class. Riley will achieve at or beyond Pelini's level once his program is established, but, unlike his predecessor, he'll occasionally knock a power off, and never embarrass Nebraska and it's alumni.

Bo wasn't fired because he didn't win enough... Bo was fired because literally everybody hated him. Boosters couldn't stand him. he was an asshole. Everybody loves Riley the person. His Aw-Schucks demeanor is as mid-west Nebraska as you can possibly get. Booster like him, he is friendly and personable.

Could be for several reasons. But after a loss it might have been a giant "EFF YOU" to some big booster(s) all over MR and/or Diaco. The extension now and his mention of again in December sounds like a power play to me.

"THE BEAVER QUANDARY"... Win and win enough (3-5 W's) GAG gets extended and the inept 'process' (assuming you believe it is indeed flawed and not necessarilyleading to consistent successes) continues... lose and players/recruiting suffer, but GAG not extended or even fired...

He didn't look sharp versus the ducks and still almost brought his team back from a big deficit. One of the downsides to Riley's offense is getting a new QB up to speed, I think that will prove true for Lee as well and once he's up to speed they might surprise some teams down the stretch. Looking back now, the downside of a slow non-conference start seems rather insignificant compared to the upside of conference wins and upsets. What Riley has never had before is two highly rated(I think both 4 star) QB's behind his starter. Getting some time to practice and develop in the system, when they get their chance on the field it will be interesting to see if they can step in right away and play like a starter or if they will struggle through a rookie learning curve.

Good Lord, if GAG were to get an extension after, some miraculous way winning 4 more games, I'd move my frustration all the way to the top of the athletic department and/or the cotton-pickin' president! That would be totally and completely INSANE!
To comment on Riley's extension; I agree, I think it's weird to extend Riley when he still has a couple years left on his contract anyway. Why not just see how he does this year and next and then if all things point in the right direction extend his contract. Seems weird to me and a potential mistake.
