"That's like, when I got here, everybody wanted me to say Jim Tressel left the cupboard bare," Meyer continued. "If I heard any assistant coach [say that], they'd be gone. You're done. "Those are your players. I hear TV guys [say], 'Wait until they get their own players in there.' They're our players. What do you mean 'their players?' The minute you sign a contract, they're your players. "You didn't choose me, I chose you. You're mine, absolutely. I love you, and I'm going to kick the s%#t out of you, and we're going to do it right … "[Blaming players] drives me insane." I really like this a lot. I wonder what his retention rates of players were when he took over at Florida and then at tOSU. I would imagine that hearing something like that from your new HC has to resonate strongly and positively.

While it sounds nice that he said this - I'd be happy with the new players too if they were all 4 and 5 star recruits.

Well he did immediately turn Bowling Green and Utah around in his first seasons there, most definitely without 4 or 5 star recruits (Bowling Green 2-9 prior season to 8-3 UM's first year, and Utah 5-6 prior season to 10-2 UM's first year). Not that I'd be dumb enough to compare our head coach to one of the best coaches in the game. Not every coach is an Urban Meyer... no. But coaches should pay attention. He isn't wrong. Meyer ain't making excuses about other players, why the hell are you? Meyer ain't crying about it "being a process", "it takes time" or any of that s%#t. why are you? Meyer sure as hell didn't need 3-4 years at ANY place he has ever coached in his entire life... why the hell do you? As the saying goes "When every place you goes smells like s%#t, maybe it is time to look under your shoes"

Except, of course, that despite the attempt, your last comment doesn't even apply to our current head coach, who had plenty of success at his two previous stops.

Let's be honest. Has anyone EVER heard a Division I coach say the previous coach left the cupboards bare? I haven't, maybe it's been inferred.
But this is a fairly myopic and borderline narcissistic statement by Meyer, he being one of the best coaches ever in college football. Yes, talent levels vary from school to school, and within schools year to year. And it's OK for the media and fans to point that out.
I think we can all safely assume no coach leaves a program, whether on his own or being fired, with the intent to leave the cupboards bare.

The cupboards are bigger and of higher quality in Columbus than they are in Corvallis.

To put his statement in context, Ohio State finished 12-1 in 2010 as the Tressel mess unraveled, then struggled a big in 2011 with the interim coach. Their recruiting rankings the 3 years prior to Meyer taking over were 5, 18, 6.
A small small small small small small violin plays in the background.

From this article: www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/urban-meyer-driven-insane-by-herman-muschamp-blaming-inherited-players/I suppose that relatively speaking, Urban Meyer could have come across a slight less-talented bunch at Ohio State by his standards for Florida or Ohio St (which would still mean that any good coach could still have success by coaching up the 3 and 4 star guys). At Oregon State, a guy would be inheriting 2 and 3 star guys and have a little more work to do in order to make them competitive immediately. No matter the situation, it's refreshing to see Meyer call BS on the whole lame "bare cupboard" excuse. At OSU, most of us recognize/acknowledge that Riley did not leave the cupboard close to bare. It was good timing for him to move on for his sake professionally, and most of us could see that either he needed to do something new in order to get a lot of people excited about OSU football, or move on (I never thought that firing him was the answer). Many of the kids who returned were solid - some stellar - football players. It was GA's right to institute whatever changes he saw fit, but I don't think it helped the present team he inherited. I also feel that it has proven to this point to have not been effective for our program moving forward. His tendency to keep bouncing around in terms of offensive philosophy and to stubbornly adhere to a defensive scheme that didn't fit his initial roster, coupled with the reality that he has largely failed to recruit players with the proper skill sets to make it work, has resulted in a hot mess. Anyone trying to use the bare cupboard argument we're off-base the first year, and are only trying to justify this staff's "F grade" performance on the field to this point whenever that bogus claim is suggested.
