Are there any NCAA protocols for smoke/air quality? Just read OSAA cancelled all high school outdoor sports for a good part of western Oregon tonight. Who makes the call for Saturday's game if the smoke is still this bad? Are we practicing in this stuff? I heard on the radio sdtr moved their practice today to the coast to get out of the smoke.
Seems this may impact the home team more than the visitor if we have to change practice routines(assuming we do).
Only other time I remember this being an issue was when we played at Boise in thick smoke. On the other hand, how many games have been played in LA under poor air quality days?

Both schools have indoor facilities... not sure the issue with practice routines or why to the coast?

With lightning forecast for tomorrow/Thursday, not looking good unless there's a steady west wind to go with it, and that would be terrible for the firefighters. Baseball, the reason I heard the indoor facility wasn't suitable had something to do with no closed, filtered, internal air circulation system in place.

I'm thinking the west wind will return by the end of week. The weather is starting to bend from full summer meltdown and that usually indicates some westerly flow.
But I'm not a weatherman, so what do I know?

As a person who is heavily tied to horticulture, I pay a lot of attention to the weather trends. The current info is for cooler temps and some showers late Wed into Thursday - but no significant rainfall. The only caveat to all of this is we are not expected to get the normal westerly flow, but rather a southern flow, with potential lightning strikes and higher humidity, which does not bode well for losing all of the smoke. The area around Medford is also on fire, combine that with smoke from No. Cal., and it may only be marginally better. If we get some rain, and cooler temps, it will help, but I am not seeing us being out of it by Sat. Hopefully that changes. A night game might be better, as you can't actually see the smoke But seriously, they will have to call it soon, or travel expenses for Minny will be a little high, with nothing to show for it!

The air quality is not bad in the Corvallis and surrounding area. It's not like being outside in it even makes you cough (not even a little bit). It's more like a high hanging haze. Exactly like an average day in LA. With less hot chicks.

Not if you know where to look for them. Then you've never spent time in LA...

In my mind, fire and smoke bode well for Oregon State. You would think that practicing in smoke will prepare the team to play in it.

Good thing I didn't spend 10+ years watching rock bands in smoky bars.

We had the Fog Bowl with USC, why not the Smoke Bowl with Minnesota?

We had the Fog Bowl with USC, why not the Smoke Bowl with Minnesota? Hopefully, the Smoke Bowl ends better. Giving up four straight touchdowns to Minnesota would make me cranky, as would blowing a 13-0 lead.
