Pac-12 Network ran a list of the "12 Greatest" players in OSU history:
12. Derek Anderson 11. Steven Paea 10. James Rodgers 9 John Didion 8. Jacquizz Rodgers 7. Jess Lewis 6. Mike Hass 5. Brandin Cooks 4. Ken Simonton 3. Bill Enyart 2. Steven Jackson 1. Terry Baker
No surprise on the first two. Paea making the list kind of surprised me. There have been better defensive players in my opinion...not stronger, but definitely better.

One of the opposing coaches raved about how he'd never seen a guy line up over the center and then drop into coverage.

I'd put Quizz higher than Simonton. Never even heard of Didion so therefore he doesn't belong on the list (no offense John). Played for Dee Andros, and was the center on the famous Giant's Killer's team. one of our very few consensus all american. played Center in the NFL for some 5-6 years.

Like D Grant, Swancutt, Barnett, Weathersby. That was off the top of my head. I'd add James Allen, Jordan Poyer, Trent Bray, and Keith Ellison If this list is about the 12 "best ever" and doesn't really factor sentimental factors then Sean Mannion needs to replace DA... and yeah, I love me some DA. Not sure how you can leave off the Pac-12 leading passer and holder of like one bazillion passing records... He is also our highest drafted QB since... well, Baker. Paea was a monster, basically a sure every down double team target. but I agree we have had better DL. Barnett, is a curious absence as other's have noted. He was a first round pick at LB and absolutely dominant. the key figure in one of the nastiest defenses OSU has ever fielded.

I didn't realize Didion was from OSU. Definitely a deserving fellah.

I'm certainly no expert on the greatest OSU football players of all time, but if I had been on the committee, I would have had some different ideas... I would have swapped Simonton and Jacquizz. Ken's one of the greatest ever, for sure, but I think Quizz was better. I would have had James Allen on the list somewhere. Can a player be a favorite without necessarily being on my list of greatest? James Rodgers is way up on my list of favorites, and the 2007 season owes any and all success it had to him, but I'm not sure he is one of the 12 greatest football players. Is Chad Johnson disqualified because he was only at OSU for one season? He's certainly one of the best receivers in OSU history -- for that one season. Go Beavs! Mike '84

Paea did win back to back Morris Trophies - given to best OL and DL in the conference.
Could make a case for Inoke Breckterfield too. Think he was 2nd or 3rd team AA and at one point was our all-time sacks leader. Don't know if that's still the case today.

(he asks, knowing that wilkyisdashiznit will have the answer via Wilkipedia shortly) Glove, please to be changing Wilky's custom tagline to "Unofficial Historian" ok I can beat him to it! CONSENSUS all americans: Terry Baker (also unanimous) Bill Enyart Steven Paea That is it. Basically everybody else on the list was voted as one, but not consensus. Derek Anderson was not, which is why I don't think he belongs on the list. Somebody mentioned Poyer, he was a consensus all american... Mike Hass was robbed of the title, in my opinion, but was a 2x all american (just not consensus). How can you win the belichenhoweveryouspellit award and NOT be? Also, major absence is Vern Burke. the greatest WR/TE (he was a big dude) in OSU history until our modern pro passing era. He was a unanimous all american. 69 catches for 1007 yards was an NCAA record at the time.

Ugh, the beaver press release is in error... Terry Baker is a consensus all american, and the page even shows him rated on all of the component polls he must be. It would appear Wikipedia is in error about Paea and Cooks though. Paea was only an AP all american it seems. And Cooks was a consensus pick... and I was pretty sure he was when I typed up that.

(he asks, knowing that wilkyisdashiznit will have the answer via Wilkipedia shortly) Glove, please to be changing Wilky's custom tagline to "Unofficial Historian" ok OA, you are a great X and O guy. You and ATown know your stuff, there is no doubt. However, if you want to become the Official Historian, go ahead and draft up the 1941 Oregon State Beavers football team on Wikipedia. I already did ones for 1962, 1964, 1967, 1985, and 1988. And what is there for 1941 is mostly all my work. I know a lot of Oregon State history but little of it is from Wikipedia. (If I didn't put it there, I wouldn't trust it anyway.........) As for All-Americans, Oregon State has had two unanimous All-Americans, Terry Baker and John Didion. As an aside, John Didion is usually referred to as a consensus selection in the Oregon State material, but he was chosen by all six official selectors in 1968, so he should be unanimous. The Media Guide mentions him as first team in all six. Sports-Reference correctly refers to him as a unanimous selection. Oregon State and the Media Guide are wrong to conclude that he is not a unanimous All-American. Is anyone in touch with our Media Guide people? I used to be but have not been since I corrected some of the 1962 stuff....... Oregon State has had four consensus All-Americans: John Witte, Vern Burke, Jordan Poyer, and Brandin Cooks. The only one that no one has mentioned is John Witte, a tackle on the 1957 Rose Bowl team. Witte was a Korean War veteran, missing the 1953 and 1954 seasons, as a result. Witte was also a wrestler, finishing second in the nation in 1951. Witte played one year of football for a bad Saskatchewan team before becoming a professional wrestler. Sporting News was the only major publication not to choose Witte. What is somewhat vexing is that Sporting News has vacillated on and off the list of being an official selector. 12 Greatest Oregon State players of their time:
1. Terry Baker (1960-1962) 2. Joseph "The Gray Ghost" Gray (1935-1937) 3. Ken Carpenter (1946-1949) 4. Brandin Cooks (2011-2013) 5. Bob Dethman (1939-1941) 6. Steven Jackson (2001-2003) 7. Don Samuel (1946-1948) 8. Bill "Earthquake" Enyart (1966-1968) 9. Eberle "Elbie" Schultz (1937-1939) 10. Bob Grim (1964-1966) 11. Nick Barnett (1999-2002) 12. Lloyd Wickett (1940-1942)
The problem is that most of the selectors were really skewed against west coast teams in general and the northwest in particular prior to the mid-50s. Once television got to be a bigger deal, there was less of a skew against Oregon State. Still, a guy like Witte, despite the fact that he was a true American hero and great human being, probably should have been a second-team All-American, at best.
