Is it possible GA is a decent defensive coach but a horrible HC? Yes. That is what it looks like to me. The thing of it is that Whittingham never allowed GA to run his defense. Aranda run a great defense at Wisconsin, but he stayed in Madison in 2015 and is now in Baton Rouge. CGA can turn it around, but that CSU game was a train wreck.

8 wins is not even remotely possible. 6 pretty much just became impossible. 5 would keep him his job, 6 would indicate momentum all be it slow. I posted the path in my prediction from last week (see below) but man if Im right people are gonna be in meltdown after the SC game! Aug 18, 2017 at 3:09pm biggieorange said:

The one guy I thought of was John Mackovic. He was fired after game #5 in his third year at Arizona. 2001, 5-6; 2002, 4-8; 2003, 1-4.

Osu hired an AD who is a buddy of the football coach and Ed Ray cant quit gushing over him. With his extension no way he doesn't at least finish out 2018 season if not longer.

has any school ever fired their coach after game one? Wilky? I'm on the record. 8 wins this year or gtfo. That just got s little bit harder to do. You need to tag me, if you want me to respond......... I can name at least one coach fired after two games, but I am having hard pressed remembering a coach fired after one. I can say that the FBS coach that last lost to Portland State was fired that day, so there is that. So, was Mike Leach fired in 2015? That's weird.....
FYI, the Cougs came back and went 9-4 in 2015 including a bowl win after opening the season with a loss to PSU.
Yes....I know you mean the North Texas coach in 2015...but that was a few games into the season after PSU beat WSU.

Portland State has actually beat four FBS teams in its history: 2000 Hawai'i. June Jones' second year. Jones took an 0-12 Hawai'i team and went 9-4 in year one (including the hatchet job O'ahu Bowl win over Oregon State). Year 2 began with a loss to Portland State, the first of nine losses en route to a 3-9 season. Jones then went 54-28 over seven seasons before leaving Hawai'i for SMU. 2006 New Mexico. Rocky Long's seventh year. Rocky Long rebounded to post a 6-6 regular-season record and went to the inaugural New Mexico Bowl. From 2001-2007, New Mexico was bowl eligible seven consecutive years, a program record, and were invited to five bowl games in six years, a program record. In 2008, after finishing 4-8 Rocky Long resigned to become a defensive coordinator at San Diego State, basically indicating that he considered New Mexico a dead-end job. 2015 Washington State. Mike Leach's fourth year. Mike Leach stumbled to a 12-25 start at Washington State and then lost to Portland State to fall to 12-26. Washington State rebounded to go 9-3 over the final 12 games including a win against Miami in the Sun Bowl. Leach's Cougars lost the next year to Eastern Washington before rebounding for an 8-4 finish. 2015 North Texas. Dan McCarney's fifth year. McCarney's best year was 9-4 in 2013 with a Heart of Dallas Bowl win over UNLV. North Texas followed that up with a 4-8 year. North Texas started 0-4 and then lost to Portland State. McCarney was fired about an hour after the game ended.

Leach's progression at WSU is one I use as a guide on how a new coach can win at a programs like OSU. First thing to look at is where and how did he start. Well he took over a P12 team with talent Sac State wouldn't want, he truly had the barest cupboard to work with in comparison to any other P12 coach who's been hired in the past 15 years. From day one Leach implemented his offensive system, stuck with it, found better and better players, and by year four had a well oiled offense ran by experienced players of a mostly decent talent level with a few playe makers sprinkled in. For having a plan and offensives system and the big boy pants to stick with it through many trying times, he was rewarded in his fourth year with a 9 win season. Had we hired a coach with a similar plan, an effective offensive system, and the know how to run it, we could be there right now in year 3. Instead year three is actually year one all over again with a new QB, a new offense, and seemingly devoid of any distinct offensive identity.
