So surprising.
I mean, the logic was so sound.

Losing over $2 million per year, plus $4 million in debt service on the park. The team never sold $500,000 in tickets in a season.
The place is obviously badly run. In 2016, Oregon State spent $420,000 on operating expenses while Oregon spent $740,000. UO is at a $300,000 deficit even before they start paying the coaches.

So surprising. I mean, the logic was so sound. If butter stick can't make it work, who can? Couple that with the other great ideas of... MATT... wanting to pull out of the OUS... 10% tuition request (denied)... just a well run institution.

I found this in an article on BSU baseball:
"The median cost of a baseball program at a university with an FBS football program was $1,664,000, according to NCAA data from 2015. With expenses and revenues taken into account, the median net revenue for a program was a loss of $926,000.
The median salary for a college baseball coach at an FBS school in 2015 was $256,000.
Nevada, a member of the Mountain West, had expenses (scholarships, operating costs, coaching salaries, recruiting, uniforms, marketing, etc.) of about $1.33 million in 2016 and $415,375 in revenue, meaning the program lost $914,000 and change, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.
Fresno State’s expenses last year were $941,06 and its revenue was about $150,000, according to the athletic department. Fresno State defines its expenses as operating costs, scholarships and coaching salaries/benefits. San Jose State had $956,179 in expenses (operating costs, scholarships and coaching salaries) and collected only $20,489 in revenue, according to the university."
Not surprisingly, baseball is a money loser almost everywhere. But the UO's deficit is over double the average . . . and that doesn't include the $4 million dollars of debt service on PK Park. Is there a more expensive white elephant in college sports?

They're not just not turning a profit. They are bleeding cash like a stuck pig. $17.5 million since 2009. I want Horton's agent. He took the *ucks to the cleaners. I especially like "10% of yearly ticket sales or $50,000 whichever is more" bonus clause. Ticket sales this year = $155k. 10 percent of that is $15.5k. "We were supposed to be in Omaha by now" -George Horton.

How much did it cost to run the wrestling program, again?

How much did it cost to run the wrestling program, again? Chuck Kearney. UO wrestling vs OSU 1999-2008. 2W, 18L 10% George Horton. UO baseball vs OSU 2009-2017. 15W, 29L 34% So Horton has a somewhat less embarrassing losing percentage than Kearney had vs OSU. Although given how much the *ucks have sunk into baseball I'm not even sure about that. But Chuck did coach a National Champion (Crater High's Shane Webster-184. 2006). Not sure what Horton's done that might rate as an equivalent achievement.

Anyone have any info on our total revenue vs expenses?
I did some quick math and I wouldn't be surprised if we came close to $1.0 mil in ticket sales this year... I'm not sure what our average attendance for a home game is.... maybe 3,000?

Listen, anyone who thought that üø Baseball would ever turn a profit was a delusional fool to begin with. Their misbegotten program was conceived, hatched and reared in envy, immorality (cutting Wrestling) and profligate excess. It was and is destined for failure.

Mentioned in this article is the reason they, uh, elected not to participate in the post-season:
"Divide the team’s yearly net loss by its number of games, and the 'ucks lose about $40,000 for every game they play."
So they are actually saving money by *not* making it to Omaha! Clearly playing fewer games is the fiscally responsible thing for them to do.
I think the buried jersey at home plate is still cursing them....
Go Beavers!
