www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2017/06/halid_djibril_3-star_oregon_st.htmlOSU works to find talented player going under the radar a bit... Recruits him, gets him to commit... Other teams notice OSU's interest and get tipped off that they missed someone.. Big name school (USC in this case) swoops in and flips the commit... Seems to happen multiple times every year... sigh... I guess that is just the life of the P5, non name school...

"The Oregon State Beavers pride themselves on finding talent earlier than most."
Does anyone know if this is actually true, or just Nemec coming up with a good opening statement? I'm still unsure if we are the first offer for guys because we identify the talent early, or that we have to offer guys months or even years prior to other schools because that's the only way they'll listen to us. Don't get me wrong, it's a good strategy. You always remember your first. I just don't know if it's actually a point of pride...because for every guy we get in on early and keep, it seems there's an equal number that end up decommitting and making us look small time.

Other teams notice OSU's interest and get tipped off that they missed someone.. Big name school (USC in this case) swoops in and flips the commit... Seems to happen multiple times every year... sigh... I guess that is just the life of the P5, non name school... I hated to see this, and am disappointed by the flip by Folau as well. Not surprised in either case, but very disappointed, nonetheless. This is a perfect example of what we always deal with here. It seems like it's so difficult to hold onto great prospects if they get the attention of the blue bloods in particular, but even upper-echelon programs. It makes it that much sweeter when a guy like David Morris says that his commitment is....a commitment. As I've said before, I know that these athletes are not bound to a specific institution until they sign on LOI day, but it is tough to see the Beavs be the first and most consistent suitor, get a commitment, and then watch someone do a lot less work and get the prize. I realize that Sitake was the main recruiter for Falau, and that his move here with GA was why we flipped him from the Utes 2 years ago, but I don't have to like it. I felt like MR came to a point in which he did less shooting for the stars, and settled into more complete personal talent evaluation to find solid under the radar kids. For years, we had remarkable success with the vast majority of our players coming in with mild reps and leaving with many having grown and developed into quality players. We put a lot of those kids in the NFL and had a lot of success with rosters filled with kids that didn't excite the recruiting pundits and gurus much as they came out of high school. MR still pursued the big names, but didn't throw his resources or bank too heavily on low probability recruits. It was, and remains a tough reality that most 4 or 5 star kids that we get a crack at are either at high risk for academic problems, heading on a mission or late bloomers who start getting attention from the "haves" as they blow up late in high school. The big names don't have to take risks. I feel like GR is trying hard to change the narrative regarding our limitations in recruiting. The perception: by making offers we are trying to win battles against those storied schools or those with significant recent national exposure, it makes fans feel like we're somehow in the hunt for more high profile athletes. In truth, we very seldom win those battles (it's why kids like Hodgins and Wallace get us so excited), but it's a perception thing. In reality, "3 star" kids are the backbone of almost every successful football program. Not only are there very few 4 and 5 star kids out there, but the difference between all but a handful of nationally-recognized recruits and most 3 stars is razor thin. The "potential" for stardom for a kid who runs a 4.3 and has a 42 inch vertical, or can bench 225 pounds 35 times is surely higher, but it's amazing how often those All-American teams are loaded with three stars. You can't quantify in advance what a kid's heart, motivation or the effect of great coaching can do to their development. I do want to get kids that everyone wants. If you're a betting man, the odds are greater that those guys will end up being impact players. However, there is much to be said for staying in your lane, recruiting "types" of athletes, and being really good at establishing a strong identity for your program, including the kids who fit best, being clear on what you're trying to do and coaching them up. The problem with settling on filling your rosters with 2 and 3 stars is that the margin for error is small. You're banking on a good number of them exceeding expectations in order to compete with the big boys. When it doesn't happen -for whatever reason - you can fall quickly (See Riley's last couple of years). GA came in and spun his wheels the first couple of years as well. Hopefully that is beginning to turn!

Sometimes I wonder if Nemec is trying a little too hard to come off as impartial as possible in his articles - he always opens with a little nugget of praise for the Beavs. Not complaining, think it's just his style. He does seem like a good dude, I think he is self aware that a duck grad covering Beaver recruiting can be a little dicey on the interwebs. As far as the commits/decommits go.. I guess it's the world we're in now. A lot more is happening early on in the spring and summer camp circuit, so kids are going to be wide eyed and make decisions and then change their minds. Seemed less of that when recruiting was more condensed to fall/winter timeframe. But agreed. it sucks to hear: I LOVE OSU.... USC offers... THANKS OSU you guys are really great but let's be friends instead... mmmkay? Shoot.. I'm having high school flashbacks now.

He and no one else could know... just "coach" or "writer" speak. Do coaching staffs claim the early finds that then never pan out? It's a shell game, and actually a more interesting question, how many times does "finding talent earlier" (actual talent that in the end plays and makes a difference) actually pan out??? I could really care less until a kid is signed and contributes... that is good recruiting. But, it seems to me kids flip from early commits way more than they stick??? If so, what's the point again... identify early get them to commit before they "kick the tires" on other brands? Or, actually sign quality contributors? Anything other than the latter is media fodder and BS.

This idea has been a pretty consistent refrain for OSU recruiting going all the way back to my earliest OSU football memories... I specifically remember during the Pettibone era fans and maybe even Jerry himself grousing about either Nebraska or Notre Dame (yes they were a option team once upon a time) doing similar things... Watching who the beavs offered and then swooping in. Certainly this was a very common complaint / narrative during the last coach's tenure as well. Of course I don't recall any coaches every actually complaining about it, but it was a big topic during every recruiting cycle for us jibber jabberers... In the end, I am sure most of it is just sour grapes from losing an important recruit that you felt you (vicariously through the coaches) had "earned" and worked hard for.

There are some who are seriously into the whole recruiting gig... but, simplistic as it sounds there is no such thing as a "committed" recruit... ONLY signed players. Those that actually sign are committed... It is all that counts.

Proof is in the pudding on this sort of thing.
Right now, Oregon is kicking our ass up and down the block and it isn't even close. they have the 7th ranked class in the nation and we are in the 70's.
we aren't close, we aren't competing heck we aren't in the same zip code. That guy that some would argue had recruiting in the toilet here is hitting it out of the park at Nebraska. Even with some recent recruit drama, he has a class we'd all shank an old lady to have.
Fluffing sunshine up our butts about improving recruiting is just that. Evidence is not there. product on the field is not there. and as others have mentioned it is CRITICALLY not there at the difficult and crucial spots to recruit at. QB, OL, DL.
netting a 4* WR is great... or a 4* safety, but it is not as paradigm shifting as getting the 4* QB or lineman.

MAN I HATE losing to tsdtr... but I have to agree, taggart has come out guns a blazing... just more evidence that substance doesn't much matter, it is ALL about the bling! Blarg, back to the good old days (back??? it has always been this way) of hoping our coaches can coach up those 2 and 3 star recruits, and find that diamond in the rough!

Legislative session is done in like 3 weeks and chaos mode will be over for now. (I do policy for the gov'ment) I did have to sit and ponder if it was appropriate to say shank or shiv and old lady. I believe shiv is the weapon with which you shank a person...
