Here is my final comment about the game.
Mccoy and Johnson are not drop back passers. Gulbranson is. If gundy wants to use McCoy's or Johnsons best skill roll them out and make their legs a weapon.
If gundy wants a drop back passer offense then use gulbranson.
To try and make mccoy/johnson a drop back passer or gulbranson a runner is not going to work.
Gundy needs to figure out what offense he wants

Curious minds want to know what is the contract guarantee for Bray, coordinators, assistants? Can his ass is your call? Give him two more years imo. If they play 3 or 4 more games like today we’d be foolish to stand by that long.

I think things just really conspired against the Beavs today. It's not just one thing, but a number of things. First off, give Cal credit. They came to play and were PISSED after losing 4 in a row they prolly should have won. So there's that along with home field. Beavs, on the flip side came out a bit flat, made some boneheaded special teams plays that sort of set the stage for what was to follow.
Second......related to number one...this was not a good matchup for us. I've watched Cal a bunch earlier in season- they are better than their record indicates. They have a lock down defense...that is their strength. Their supposed weakness- offense- got the remedy it needed against an injury depleted, thin OSU defense. And Mendoza, he's not a bad QB...when he has time. I still think we could have picked him off at least once or twice, but alas, we didn't.
There was a clear talent discrepancy, as expected. Not 44-7 discrepant mind you...there's no excuse for that. And therein comes perhaps some coaching mishaps..we never seemed to be in the right place at the right time....I hate to blame coaching too much generally, but felt like we were out-coached today as well.
We're not a great team, but we're not as bad as all that either. Hankerson was keyed on, and he's wearing thin methinks...we REALLY need Griffin back. Any chance of that? And lastly, the QB situation is obviously becoming a problem. I'm not sure what is going on with McCoy...he seems to be deteriorating, maybe nagging injury? The explosive runs are now totally absent; although this wasn't a CSU defense out there either.
I dunno, guess I'm rambling..processing it all. End of the day, we need the bye week....gotta get right against San Jose St, and go from there....one week at a time now. In the big picture, getting bowl eligible feels like a must in order to stay relevant and not further brushed aside by the college football machine right now.

So if Bray wins 1 more game he is ahead of schedule? Read my edited version. No. JS went 5-7 against a Pac-12 schedule. Not comparable at all. He also had talent recruited to a Pac-12 school, most of whom either graduated or bailed after last season. If you really want to compare apples to apples.

Welcome to the Misery Loves Company thread!
You shouldn’t be upset. Check out all these other horrendous losses!
Hey! 9-63 Homecoming 1981 against Stanford! Wheee!!!!
See? It’s not that bad!

I was hoping for a softer landing, but this year will be what it is. If similar or worse things are happening next year, then you can start a real discussion. Until then, you are just yelling at clouds.

If you really want to compare apples to apples. The current team has quite a few players recruited to a Pac-12 team or power conference team. The 2019 schedule was much tougher than the one OSU is playing this fall.

And a 42-16 loss at Utah. 52-7 against Utah in Corvallis in 2019 was worse. Oregon State lost to Ohio State 77-31 in 2018 and lost in Corvallis to both Cal (49-7) and Oregon (55-15). The 69-10 Civil War in 2017 was also bad. There have been several worse games in the past seven years.

If you don’t realize how bad of a loss this was that’s on you. You were very optimistic before this game and we sucked in all phases. I hope it was a one off deal. But if it’s not, and there are similar performances ahead, and you don’t see it as a giant warning sign, well that’s fine. But I personally think it’s foolish.

Outside of the San Diego State game, the rush defense was the best that it has been this year. The pass defense getting torched is kind of a new one. But no defense is going to be successful, if the offense cannot stay on the field. McCoy has looked like a second-string FCS quarterback the last three weekends, which was why I was pushing for Gulbranson at the beginning of the year. And here we are probably where should have been the whole time. Johnson looks like the quarterback of the future. And McCoy may also be the quarterback of the future. But neither seems like the quarterback of the present. Maybe they get McCoy's head screwed on right for San Jose State or just roll with Gulbranson. But we have to have better production out of the most-important position on the field, or this all could really go sideways.
