One can talk about all the adverse circumstances the program has faced, and I think that talk is certainly legitimate. But prior to the season who was predicting a nailbiter win against Colo State, followed by losses to Nevada and UNLV? None of us. Who was predicting one of the worst statistical rush defenses in years? How about sweating out 6-6, or worse, against a MWC schedule? None of us. In fact prior to the season our head coach was talking about competing for the cfp.
"Sunshine patriot," or otherwise, concern about the direction of the program at this point is something I share.
Prior to the season, who was predicting the avalanche of injuries which have decimated our defense, especially our front 7, which is generally responsible for rushing defense? I'm not as versed in schemes, etc., as some here seem to be, but I do know backups are never as good as starters and if you are forced to play backups as starters there will be a sure decline in results.
I thought Bray was talking about "competing for the cfp" in general terms regarding the goals of the program going forward, not specifically this season. After the huge graduation/portal losses that essentially gutted our upperclassmen, we had no shot at the cfp and he knew it.
Excellent points Henry. On the O-line, I know it is just one player, but losing Tyler Voltin for the season, a guy that is literally 380 pounds, 6' 4", and is really fast for a guy that size - how many other players do we have, hell does most any team have, that can fill those shoes?
I always hated when the quacks year after year made the same excuses about how they would have won the game if so and so wasn't out due to injury, but the cumulative effect of so many injuries, when you are not Alabama or Ohio State is gonna have an impact.
I have no idea where TB and staff will take this team going forward, or how successful we will be. I do know he and WSU have been dealt sh*ttty hands in all of this, and the worst thing we can do right now is turn our backs on the program, or simply disappear as a fan. The outcome the past two weeks sucks, but the tailgating was great, the weather was incredible, and I am actually glad we did the Reser renovations when we did. It will help to attract talent, in an increasingly competitive environment for recruits.
I am as concerned as the next guy, I just think it is a little premature to be hitting the panic button. Any new coach, especially with all of the attrition that has occurred in the past year, will struggle year one to get some consistency with players and staff. One side benefit is the younger 2nd and 3rd string players are getting valuable play time. Go Beavs!
