It’s going to be Ben, at least for the first game. Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m jumping for joy. I’ve been reading and hearing that none of the three have impressed enough to pull away from the others. Beavers edge podcast said that Ben pretty much looks like the Ben we have always seen. Not a great arm, not really athletic in any way, and throws some bad picks. It sounds like a deep passing game has been basically non-existent all camp. I’m guessing it will be like 2022 all over again without as good of an overall offense, but a weaker strength of schedule. And don’t plan on beating Oregon without throwing the ball this time.
I think it’s clear Ben is the safe pick just because he is a vet that has shown to be an effective game manager as long as the running game and defense are really good. He should get us to 6, 7, 8 wins (bowl game) even if he continues to be average at best.

Also, they have a limited amount of time to actually see the three QBs in action and the coaches most likely are doing more in the closed practices. Also, maybe, just maybe, the defense is really good and has caused a lot of the issues for the QBs as far as inconsistent play. That makes some sense to me because A. I think the defense is going to be really strong and B. Ben and McCoy should be showing more due to their experience. And they are also have been in the process of sorting out the receivers. |

I don’t claim to be a football genius, but I trust my eyes, and Ben is average when he plays his very best football. He does not have a great arm, and he isn’t very athletic in any way. People don’t have to tell me that, I can just see it. Remember this before being too optimistic about Ben - Less than 12 months ago he was a third string qb behind an underachieving transfer and a true freshman, and that was after he was the qb for a ten win Beaver team the year before. If that doesn’t tell you what real talent evaluators think of him, I don’t know what will. He will manage us to some nice wins this year by avoiding the big mistake. But we won’t win because of his stellar play. |

But we won’t win because of his stellar play. Ben was coming off shoulder surgery in 2022. We have not seen what his true arm strength is and there's no guarantee that we will. But don't expect DJU arm strength either way. Ben is actually very accurate and does not throw picks very often in the games he's played. And I'm getting tired of this false narrative that he's not athletic. He has pretty decent speed and we've seen that play out on the field more than once. He's definitely athletic enough. He was third string behind an "underachieving" transfer from Clemson who put up really good passing numbers for a run-oriented offense at OSU and is now starting for Florida State. And his play was not the reason FSU lost to GT. And Chiles is going to start for Michigan State. How often has OSU had two QBs of that caliber on the same team? Maybe never. |

But those quarterbacks that are both elite runners and throwers typically do not wind up at Oregon State. |

I think any OSU fan who is really concerned about Gulbranson as the starting QB this year should check out the Las Vegas Bowl highlights from 2022.
Ben not only has complete command of the offense but you see him throw a few absolute strikes, run up the middle for a 7-yard TD and he even rolled out and made a throw on the run.
I'm not expecting him to be a superstar but this does give you a little snapshot of what he can do.

Ben may start vs OSU's worst opponent of the year. But he'll not be the starter long.

OSU had 197 total yards and Gulbranson had 180 of that in passing yards and the lone touchdown pass. The Beavers rushed for a net of two yards. Notre Dame had several key starters skip the game. The Beavers were absolutely gutted on offense and had a bunch of key starters out on defense. |

Lol... your point? Like FL in '22 wasn't vastly depleted when you pointed out that performance. It's pretty simple... a guy in the program for years, new system or not, has not clearly beat out two complete newcomers. My point is he played well against both opponents no matter what players surrounded him. From what I've heard, Johnson just isn't ready and McCoy hasn't looked good enough to start. As I've said before, I'm hoping they will get Johnson on the field no matter who starts. Just too dynamic to keep on the sidelines. |
