Going to be interesting, slot just $195k there but top 10 rounds they almost always know what they are doing and might have more $ saved elsewhere for him.....best to assume he's gone.

Almost everyone on here is pretty realistic, so you all know this...but the reminder for those hoping that Swanson doesn't sign....
2023: 1 player out of the 314 players selected in the top 10 rounds failed to sign. A junior at at UC-Irvine that decided to go back to school
2022: 3 players failed to sign in the 2022 draft’s top 10 rounds. Draft eligible Soph pitcher Ok St that Orioles found issue in medicals, Draft eligible Soph pitcher Florida that couldn't agree and 10th round Junior from Wichita
2021: 3 players did not sign from the top 10 rounds. Kumar Rocker - injury issues, OF Florida that couldn't agree to Boston deal (rumors he didn't want to be in their org), Prep SS in 4th round with some issues that led to him going JC
2020: Zero. In a shortened 5-round Covid-related draft, not one player picked in the 5 rounds failed to sign.
2019: 2 players did not sign from the top 10 rounds. 7th round HS pitcher went to Florida, Juco C that couldn't come to deal

Will be interesting to see if this year’s class continues the trend. Only possible difference maker I can see is NIL, but no idea if this kid is getting anything or if he is worth that type of investment. But there may be others willing to accept NIL + college opportunity in lieu of slogging through the minors?

Potentially...but my expectation would be that the players are sharing that with the teams up front, so hopefully is helping the players get more $ from the MLB teams, but given how the slot/pool system, it likely shouldn't break the % of signings....but does make it more likely for teams to try to sign guys under slot in first two rounds to create $ for a 9th round guy like Swanson.... we'll see!!!

Of Detroit's 11 picks, 7 were college guys, I'd bet they save enough to sign him somehow.
Too bad, but we're still gonna have some outstanding players coming in.

Bryce Rainer, Harvard-Westlake HS 2. Owen Hall, Edmond North HS B. Ethan Schiefelbein, Corona Senior HS 3. Josh Randall, San Diego 4. Michael Massey, Wake Forest 5. Jack Penney, Notre Dame 6. Woody Hadeen, Irvine 7. Jackson Strong, Canisius 8. Ethan Sloan, Regis 9. Zach Swanson, Toutle Lake HS 10. R.J. Sales, Wilmington
Randall, Massey, Penney, and Strong are juniors. Hadeen is a redshirt junior. Sloan is a senior. Expect the Tigers to use most of that $221,400 to negotiate with the four high schoolers. R.J. Sales is a redshirt sophomore and may be the hardest player to sign outside of the high schoolers.

Website shows that Swanson signed for slot value Not the MLB website, but, yes, I have heard it reported that Swanson was signed for $195,100.

Best of luck to the young man. College isn't for everyone.
I always like to see where players who sign are three years down the road. My guess is Swanson will be in High A, or about the exact some place he'd be if he attends college and develops, gets drafted again in 2027 and misses out on the crappy bus rides, flea-bag hotels, crappy post-game food spreads and playing 140 games in the heat and humidity at some rookie league, low A or High A outpost in the deep south or midwest.
I've heard Lakeland, Fla., can be beautiful in July and August.

Weird to me in the world of NIL a HS prospect not in the first few rounds would opt to not go the college route (assumes they have the academic chops)
Get a degree Develop as a player Not go from parents home to being on your own (college players still get taken care of more than MiLB players) Get some NIL money Be a campus hero with all it's perks..
$195K won't last long

With the revamped MiLB system transportation, facilities, housing, nutrition, and medical is far better than before reduction in affiliates. Plus that $195k is far, FAR more than the average NIL. And, it can be socked away. Salaries have also increased dramatically. Rookie level players now get $675/wk with almost no expenses. Minimum salary at Rookie ball is $19,800 in 2024. Plus $30 daily per diem. Also if released, their health insurance continues 90 days after the release date. As mentioned players can still get college courses paid. Ands, like college players take online classes all year long. $200k+ all the extras is super appealing to most who see baseball as their priority.
